The Bahá’í Writings

Love

Love is the Secret

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls love the “secret” of God’s Dispensation. Beneath every law and institution of religion flows love, and only when we grasp it does the meaning of faith open to us.

Know thou of a certainty that Love is the secret of God’s holy Dispensation, the manifestation of the All-Merciful, the fountain of spiritual outpourings. Love is heaven’s kindly light, the Holy Spirit’s eternal breath that vivifieth the human soul.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 12

Love is the cause of God’s revelation unto man, the vital bond inherent, in accordance with the divine creation, in the realities of things. Love is the one means that ensureth true felicity both in this world and the next. Love is the light that guideth in darkness, the living link that uniteth God with man, that assureth the progress of every illumined soul.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 12

Show love to all; “Love is the breath of the Holy Spirit in the heart of Man.”
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 6

That which is acceptable in the sight of God is love. Love is, in reality, the first effulgence of Divinity and the greatest splendor of God.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 6 November 1912

Love is the Greatest Law

From the attraction that binds the elements to the courses of the stars and the pull of one heart toward another, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá sees a single law of love at work. Before it is an ethic, love is the order of the universe.

Love is the most great law that ruleth this mighty and heavenly cycle, the unique power that bindeth together the divers elements of this material world, the supreme magnetic force that directeth the movements of the spheres in the celestial realms. Love revealeth with unfailing and limitless power the mysteries latent in the universe. Love is the spirit of life unto the adorned body of mankind, the establisher of true civilization in this mortal world, and the shedder of imperishable glory upon every high-aiming race and nation.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 12

It is, therefore, evident that in the world of humanity the greatest king and sovereign is love. If love were extinguished, the power of attraction dispelled, the affinity of human hearts destroyed, the phenomena of human life would disappear.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 16 August 1912

Love is greater than peace, for peace is founded upon love. Love is the objective point of peace, and peace is an outcome of love. Until love is attained, peace cannot be; but there is a so-called peace without love. The love which is from God is the fundamental. This love is the object of all human attainment, the radiance of heaven, the light of man.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 2 June 1912

The Power of Love

Love gives life to the lifeless and kindles the cold heart. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá repeats that there is no greater power in existence. In an age that equates power with force and wealth, these words redefine power itself.

What a power is love! It is the most wonderful, the greatest of all living powers.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 58

Love gives life to the lifeless. Love lights a flame in the heart that is cold. Love brings hope to the hopeless and gladdens the hearts of the sorrowful.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 58

In the world of existence there is indeed no greater power than the power of love. When the heart of man is aglow with the flame of love, he is ready to sacrifice all—even his life. In the Gospel it is said God is love.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 58

Were it not for the love of God, the hearts would not be illumined. Were it not for the love of God, the pathway of the Kingdom would not be opened. Were it not for the love of God, the Holy Books would not have been revealed. Were it not for the love of God, the divine Prophets would not have been sent to the world. The foundation of all these bestowals is the love of God. Therefore, in the human world there is no greater power than the love of God.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 16 August 1912

Love for All Mankind

Here the counsel is to see every person as a servant of the one God and as one’s equal. Complain of no one, let even advice carry no burden, and turn every thought toward bringing joy to hearts.

You must manifest complete love and affection toward all mankind. Do not exalt yourselves above others, but consider all as your equals, recognizing them as the servants of one God. Know that God is compassionate toward all; therefore, love all from the depths of your hearts, prefer all religionists before yourselves, be filled with love for every race, and be kind toward the people of all nationalities.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 2 December 1912

Do not complain of others. Refrain from reprimanding them, and if you wish to give admonition or advice, let it be offered in such a way that it will not burden the hearer. Turn all your thoughts toward bringing joy to hearts. Beware! Beware! lest ye offend any heart. Assist the world of humanity as much as possible.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 2 December 1912

Be ye loving fathers to the orphan, and a refuge to the helpless, and a treasury for the poor, and a cure for the ailing. Be ye the helpers of every victim of oppression, the patrons of the disadvantaged. Think ye at all times of rendering some service to every member of the human race. Pay ye no heed to aversion and rejection, to disdain, hostility, injustice: act ye in the opposite way. Be ye sincerely kind, not in appearance only.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 1

The best remedy for hate is love, as hate is the absence of love! In this respect you must show forth the love of God to others, Bahá’ís and non-Bahá’ís alike, and thus do your part to dispel the darkness in this world. This is what the beloved Master expects of His servants.
From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer, October 12, 1949; Lights of Guidance, no. 1339

The Unconditionality of Love

In past dispensations the command to love reached only those of like mind; in this age it reaches even the enemy. Love that never asks whether the other deserves it is the love ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá describes for the new age.

In every dispensation, there hath been the commandment of fellowship and love, but it was a commandment limited to the community of those in mutual agreement, not to the dissident foe. In this wondrous age, however, praised be God, the commandments of God are not delimited, not restricted to any one group of people, rather have all the friends been commanded to show forth fellowship and love, consideration and generosity and loving-kindness to every community on earth.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 7

The meaning of this is that ye must show forth tenderness and love to every human being, even to your enemies, and welcome them all with unalloyed friendship, good cheer, and loving-kindness. When ye meet with cruelty and persecution at another’s hands, keep faith with him; when malevolence is directed your way, respond with a friendly heart.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 7

Wherefore must the loved ones of God associate in affectionate fellowship with stranger and friend alike, showing forth to all the utmost loving-kindness, disregarding the degree of their capacity, never asking whether they deserve to be loved.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 8

It is incumbent upon everyone to show the utmost love, rectitude of conduct, straightforwardness and sincere kindliness unto all the peoples and kindreds of the world, be they friends or strangers. So intense must be the spirit of love and loving-kindness, that the stranger may find himself a friend, the enemy a true brother, no difference whatsoever existing between them. For universality is of God and all limitations earthly.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá

You mention the fact that at times you feel strongly attracted to people whom you have never known before; this is surely the kind of love which every Bahá’í should cultivate. For we Bahá’ís should come to love all human beings, whether believers or not, alien or friendly. The love which Bahá’u’lláh wishes us to acquire is a love that embraces the whole mankind.
From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer, November 20, 1937; Lights of Guidance, no. 1342

The Unlimitedness of Love

As the sun shines on every land and the rain falls on every field, so must the love of God’s servants reach all humanity without restriction. Love of family, race or party has its limits; only love born of the Spirit of God knows no boundary.

In like manner, the affections and loving-kindness of the servants of the One True God must be bountifully and universally extended to all mankind. Regarding this, restrictions and limitations are in no wise permitted.

Love is In Thee

Bahá’u’lláh tells us that God’s love is not far off but has already made its home within us. Before we search for it elsewhere, the spiritual journey begins with recognizing it there.

Love and Sorrows

True love does not flee from hardship. Bahá’u’lláh calls patience in trials the sign of love, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says suffering ripens the soul as deep ploughing prepares the soil. For Koreans who know han (한), sorrow can become the place where love deepens.

Love of Human Creation

Human beings are not an accident; we were made to be loved and to love. Bahá’u’lláh says God created us because He knew His love for us. That the reason for our existence is love is a deep consolation for anyone who has lost a sense of their own worth.

The Four Kinds of Love

In London ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá described four kinds of love: from God to man, from man to God, God’s love for His own Self, and the love of man for man. Attraction that shifts with circumstance is not true love; all four kinds originate in God.

There are four kinds of love. The first is the love that flows from God to man; it consists of the inexhaustible graces, the Divine effulgence and heavenly illumination. Through this love the world of being receives life. Through this love man is endowed with physical existence, until, through the breath of the Holy Spirit—this same love—he receives eternal life and becomes the image of the Living God. This love is the origin of all the love in the world of creation.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 58

The second is the love that flows from man to God. This is faith, attraction to the Divine, enkindlement, progress, entrance into the Kingdom of God, receiving the Bounties of God, illumination with the lights of the Kingdom. This love is the origin of all philanthropy; this love causes the hearts of men to reflect the rays of the Sun of Reality.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 58

The third is the love of God towards the Self or Identity of God. This is the transfiguration of His Beauty, the reflection of Himself in the mirror of His Creation. This is the reality of love, the Ancient Love, the Eternal Love. Through one ray of this Love all other love exists.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 58

The fourth is the love of man for man. The love which exists between the hearts of believers is prompted by the ideal of the unity of spirits. This love is attained through the knowledge of God, so that men see the Divine Love reflected in the heart. Each sees in the other the Beauty of God reflected in the soul, and finding this point of similarity, they are attracted to one another in love. This love will make all men the waves of one sea, this love will make them all the stars of one heaven and the fruits of one tree. This love will bring the realization of true accord, the foundation of real unity.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 58

But the love which sometimes exists between friends is not (true) love, because it is subject to transmutation; this is merely fascination. As the breeze blows, the slender trees yield. If the wind is in the East the tree leans to the West, and if the wind turns to the West the tree leans to the East. This kind of love is originated by the accidental conditions of life. This is not love, it is merely acquaintanceship; it is subject to change.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 58

What the World Needs is Love and Action

Even the noblest ideal is useless unless it is put into action. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá taught that love shows its reality in deeds, not words, and the Guardian’s secretary wrote that the world wants not preaching and rules but love and action. The teaching resonates with the East Asian ideal of the unity of knowing and doing

Without the spirit of real love for Bahá’u’lláh, for His Faith and its Institutions, and the believers for each other, the Cause can never really bring in large numbers of people. For it is not preaching and rules the world wants, but love and action.

The great thing is to ‘Live the Life’–to have our lives so saturated with the Divine teachings and the Bahá’í Spirit that people cannot fail to see a joy, a power, a love, a purity, a radiance, an efficiency in our character and work that will distinguish us from worldly-minded people and make people wonder what is the secret of this new life in us. We must become entirely selfless and devoted to God so that every day and every moment we seek to do only what God would have us do and in the way He would have us do it. If we do this sincerely then we shall have perfect unity and harmony with each other. Where there is want of harmony there is lack of the true Bahá’í Spirit. Unless we can show this transformation in our lives, this new power, this mutual love and harmony, then the Bahá’í teachings are but a name to us.

The First Sign of Faith is Love

Faith shows itself in love before it shows itself in assent to doctrine. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says the message of every Manifestation is love, and that until love takes possession of the heart no other divine bounty can appear in it.

Intellectualism and Love

The Bahá’í Faith honours reason and science, yet it teaches that reason alone cannot bind human hearts together. In the Seven Valleys the fire of love burns the harvest of reason to ashes, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says science cannot create fellowship among people. Knowledge of the head becomes whole only when completed by love of the heart.

True Religion is the Source of Love

Many turn away from religion when they see hatred and war carried out in its name. The Bahá’í Writings share that concern, declaring that a religion which does not produce love and unity is no religion at all. From the cohesion of minerals to the affinities of plants and animals and the attraction of human hearts, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls the force that binds every level of existence love. Without it all things scatter and vanish; simply to exist is already evidence of love.

Love for the Sake of God

Because people are imperfect, looking only at them leads in the end to disappointment and anger. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá counsels us to love people not for themselves but for the sake of God; then love is not shaken by others’ faults and sees with the eye of forgiveness.

Every Human Face a Sign of His Reflected Glory

Shoghi Effendi writes that the love Bahá’ís feel for people of every race and class is neither artificial nor contrived but spontaneous and genuine. Those whose hearts are warmed by God’s creative love see in every face a sign of His glory, and then no stranger remains a stranger.

Love of One’s Country

An ancient saying holds that love of one’s country is an element of faith. Bahá’u’lláh does not reject it but calls us now to take pride in loving the whole world. For Koreans, who lived through colonial rule and division, love of country runs deep; the Bahá’í teachings say that this love does not conflict with love of humanity but finds its fulfilment within it.

Of old it hath been revealed: “Love of one’s country is an element of the Faith of God.” The Tongue of Grandeur hath, however, in the day of His manifestation proclaimed: “It is not his to boast who loveth his country, but it is his who loveth the world.” Through the power released by these exalted words He hath lent a fresh impulse, and set a new direction, to the birds of men’s hearts, and hath obliterated every trace of restriction and limitation from God’s holy Book.
Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, XLIII

Unbridled nationalism, as distinguished from a sane and legitimate patriotism, must give way to a wider loyalty, to the love of humanity as a whole. Bahá’u’lláh’s statement is: “The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.” The concept of world citizenship is a direct result of the contraction of the world into a single neighborhood through scientific advances and of the indisputable interdependence of nations. Love of all the world’s peoples does not exclude love of one’s country. The advantage of the part in a world society is best served by promoting the advantage of the whole.

As regards the meaning of Bahá’u’lláh’s words regarding love of humanity, the Master often explained it to mean that man should love his family, then his native town, then his province, then his nation, but should not stop there and acquire a narrow nationalism, but grow to love the whole-wide world and mankind at large. Bahá’ís love their country but should also love the world, that is, other peoples.

Familial Love

East Asians, who have long made filial piety (孝) a foundation of life, will welcome Bahá’u’lláh’s words that, after recognizing the unity of God, the greatest thing is to honour the rights of one’s parents. At the same time ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá notes that the tie of blood alone has limits; family love, too, must be widened and deepened by the light of the love of God.

Our past is not the thing that matters so much in this world as what we intend to do with our future. The inestimable value of religion is that when a man is vitally connected with it, through a real and living belief in it and in the Prophet Who brought it, he receives a strength greater than his own which helps him to develop his good characteristics and overcome his bad ones. The whole purpose of religion is to change not only our thoughts but our acts; when we believe in God and His Prophet and His Teachings, we find we are growing, even though we perhaps thought ourselves incapable of growth and change!

The Sea Refuses No River

The sea refuses no stream, and so it grows deep and wide Christ saw the white teeth in the carcass of a dog, and Bahá’u’lláh bids us never to despise the low estate of a sinner. Covering others’ faults and seeking out what is good and usable in them is the attitude Shoghi Effendi again and again commended to the believers.

The Essence of Love

In the Words of Wisdom Bahá’u’lláh states the essence of love in a single sentence: to turn the heart to the Beloved, to sever oneself from all else, and to desire nothing but what one’s Lord desires. Every human love draws its strength from this fundamental orientation.

If Love Were Permitted

Bahá’u’lláh says that if the learned and worldly‑wise of this age would allow humanity to inhale the fragrance of fellowship and love, the meaning of true liberty and the secret of peace would be discovered. What blocks love is often not the ignorance of the many but the prejudice of the influential.

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that every movement animated by love moves from the periphery to the centre. As a magnet draws iron, the love of God draws souls toward their source, and with that power even the longest road can be travelled easily and swiftly.

We easily treat those of different colour, accent, hometown or faith as ‘others’. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá asks us to cleanse our eyes so that we see no one as different from ourselves. Love comes hard when we fix our gaze on otherness, yet diversity itself can become a cause of love, like notes blending in a chord.

The Love of God, Root of All Love

Every human love is at last a single ray of the love of God. Bahá’u’lláh says our paramount duty is to choose for ourselves what none can usurp, and that this is the love of God. As a deep‑rooted tree is not shaken by the wind, love rooted in the love of God does not easily grow cold.

Love and Detachment

Detachment does not mean giving up love but putting love in its proper place. Bahá’u’lláh likens detachment to the sun: in whatever heart it shines it quenches the fire of covetousness and self. Only a heart not bound to the world is free to love everyone.

We must look higher than all earthly thoughts; detach ourselves from every material idea, crave for the things of the spirit; fix our eyes on the everlasting bountiful Mercy of the Almighty, who will fill our souls with the gladness of joyful service to His command “Love One Another.”

We must never take one sentence in the Teachings and isolate it from the rest: it does not mean we must not love, but we must reach a spiritual plane where God comes first and great human passions are unable to turn us away from Him. 32.

Love and Sacrifice

The depth of love is shown by what it is willing to give. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá asks us to love our friends more than ourselves and to be ready to give even life in the path of another’s happiness. Sacrifice is not love’s loss but the way love is fulfilled.

Self-sacrifice means to subordinate this lower nature and its desires to the more godly and noble side of ourselves. 33.

Love of Enemies

Christ’s teaching to love one’s enemies is given anew in this age in still more concrete form: sweeten the soul of the one who poisons you, be a salve to the wound of the one who wounds you. It is not a call to condone evil but to find the courage of love that breaks the cycle of hatred.

Should other peoples and nations be unfaithful to you, show your fidelity unto them; should they be unjust toward you, show justice towards them; should they keep aloof from you, attract them to yourselves; should they show their enmity, be friendly towards them; should they poison your lives, sweeten their souls; should they inflict a wound upon you, be a salve to their sores. Such are the attributes of the sincere! Such are the attributes of the truthful!
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá

Recognize your enemies as friends, and consider those who wish you evil as the wishers of good. You must not see evil as evil and then compromise with your opinion, for to treat in a smooth, kindly way one whom you consider evil or an enemy is hypocrisy, and this is not worthy or allowable. You must consider your enemies as your friends, look upon your evil-wishers as your well-wishers and treat them accordingly. Act in such a way that your heart may be free from hatred.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 2 December 1912

Love and Justice

Love and justice are not opposed. Bahá’u’lláh calls justice the best beloved of all things and says its purpose is the appearance of unity among people. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that the individual should forgive while society must protect the weak through justice. Love without justice remains sentiment; justice without love grows cold.

Just as forgiveness is one of the attributes of God’s mercy, so is justice one of the attributes of His lordship. The canopy of existence rests upon the pole of justice and not of forgiveness, and the life of mankind depends on justice and not on forgiveness.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Some Answered Questions, no. 77

Love as Service

Love shows itself in service. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá tells us to love everybody and serve everybody, and says that serving humanity and ministering to people’s needs is itself worship and prayer. Even daily work, done in the spirit of service, becomes praise offered to God.

Love of Neighbor and Stranger

Warm hospitality to guests is an old Korean virtue, yet hearts easily close before strangers from abroad. In Paris ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá urged His listeners not to look at strangers with suspicion but to help them feel at home. It is a word much needed in a Korean society with growing numbers of migrants and foreign students.

Kindness is the garment love wears in daily life. Bahá’u’lláh calls a kindly tongue the lodestone of human hearts and asks that even truth be shared with words of utmost kindliness. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá urges us to be kind to all, like the sun that shines on garden and rubbish heap alike.

Indeed the believers have not yet fully learned to draw on each other’s love for strength and consolation in time of need. The Cause of God is endowed with tremendous powers, and the reason the believers do not gain more from it is because they have not learned to draw fully on these mighty forces of love and strength and harmony generated by the Faith.

39. 마음

The Heart

Bahá’u’lláh’s first counsel is to possess a pure, kindly and radiant heart. The heart is the home where God wishes to dwell, and when it is cleansed the rose of love can bloom. These words resonate deeply with East Asian traditions that place the heart‑mind (心) at the centre of self‑cultivation.

Jeong and Love

Jeong (정) is the deep Korean bond that grows through long shared time and common life. It is precious, yet when it stays only among our own people it can become a wall between ‘us’ and ‘them’. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says every worldly bond is limited, while fellowship founded on the love of God is unlimited and everlasting. Rooted in the love of God, the warmth of jeong can embrace all humanity.

Every other bond of friendship is limited in effectiveness, but fellowship based upon the love of God is unlimited, everlasting, divine and radiant.

The real brotherhood is spiritual, for physical brotherhood is subject to separation. The wars of the outer world of existence separate humankind, but in the eternal world of spiritual brotherhood separation is unknown. Material or physical association is based upon earthly interests, but divine fellowship owes its existence to the breaths of the Holy Spirit.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 19 May 1912

Fruits of One Tree, Waves of One Sea

Bahá’u’lláh calls humanity the fruits of one tree and the leaves of one branch. As the waves of one sea do not war with each other, love lets people of different faces recognize themselves as members of one body. Love and unity give birth to and protect each other.

Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, CXXXII

Love and Joy

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says human happiness lies in the fragrance of the love of God. Material pleasure soon fades, but joy that comes from the love of God spreads to others. He wished His friends to laugh, smile and rejoice so that those who saw them would be made happy too.

Loving Speech

Love is tested first in speech. Bahá’u’lláh warns that backbiting quenches the light of the heart and extinguishes the life of the soul, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá asks us never to speak against anyone in their absence or to wound any heart. As the Korean proverb says, one kind word repays a debt of a thousand nyang; loving speech gives life to relationships.

Each of us is responsible for one life only, and that is our own. Each of us is immeasurably far from being ‘perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect’ and the task of perfecting our own life and character is one that requires all our attention, our will-power and energy. If we allow our attention and energy to be taken up in efforts to keep others right and remedy their faults, we are wasting precious time. We are like ploughmen each of whom has his team to manage and his plough to direct, and in order to keep his furrow straight he must keep his eye on his goal and concentrate on his own task. If he looks to this side and that to see how Tom and Harry are getting on and to criticise their ploughing, then his own furrow will assuredly become crooked.

It is obvious that if we listen to those who complain to us about the faults of others we are guilty of complicity in their backbiting.
