Prejudice / Mind and Soul

Religion as the Antithesis of Unity

Again and again, in America and Europe, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá said that a religion which breeds hatred and division were better abandoned. This is not a rejection of religion but a call back to its purpose: a remedy that worsens the illness has ceased to be a remedy.

Religion should unite all hearts and cause wars and disputes to vanish from the face of the earth, give birth to spirituality, and bring life and light to each heart. If religion becomes a cause of dislike, hatred and division, it were better to be without it, and to withdraw from such a religion would be a truly religious act. For it is clear that the purpose of a remedy is to cure; but if the remedy should only aggravate the complaint, it had better be left alone.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 40

The third teaching of Bahá’u’lláh is that religion must be the source of fellowship, the cause of unity and the nearness of God to man. If it rouses hatred and strife, it is evident that absence of religion is preferable and an irreligious man better than one who professes it. According to the divine Will and intention religion should be the cause of love and agreement, a bond to unify all mankind, for it is a message of peace and goodwill to man from God.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 9 June 1912

The chief cause is the misrepresentation of religion by the religious leaders and teachers. They teach their followers to believe that their own form of religion is the only one pleasing to God, and that followers of any other persuasion are condemned by the All-Loving Father and deprived of His Mercy and Grace. Hence arise among the peoples disapproval, contempt, disputes and hatred. If these religious prejudices could be swept away, the nations would soon enjoy peace and concord.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 13

If this prejudice and enmity are on account of religion consider that religion should be the cause of fellowship, otherwise it is fruitless.

Religious Prejudice

Religious prejudice arises when people are taught that their own form of faith alone pleases God and that others are condemned. The Writings hold that the foundation of all the divine religions is one, and that division comes not from that foundation but from later interpretation and imitation.

Most of the wars have been caused by religious prejudice, fanaticism and sectarian hatred. Religionists have anathematized religionists, each considering the other as deprived of the mercy of God, abiding in gross darkness and the children of Satan.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 17 August 1912

All these have served the world of humanity. All have summoned souls to peace and accord. All have proclaimed the virtues of humanity. All have guided souls to the attainment of perfections, but among the nations certain imitations of ancestral forms of worship have arisen. These imitations are not the foundation and essence of the divine religions. Inasmuch as they differ from the reality and the essential teachings of the Manifestations of God, dissensions have arisen, and prejudice has developed. Religious prejudice thus becomes the cause of warfare and battle.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 7 October 1912

Religious strife, throughout history, has been the cause of innumerable wars and conflicts, a major blight to progress, and is increasingly abhorrent to the people of all faiths and no faith. Followers of all religions must be willing to face the basic questions which this strife raises, and to arrive at clear answers.
The Universal House of Justice, The Promise of World Peace

Racial Prejudice

In America in 1912 ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá rejoiced to see black and white together, observing that doves look not at color but at kind. In a Korea long proud of its ethnic homogeneity and now home to growing numbers of migrants and multicultural families, His calling racial prejudice “an illusion, a superstition” speaks freshly.

Concerning the prejudice of race: it is an illusion, a superstition pure and simple! For God created us all of one race. There were no differences in the beginning, for we are all descendants of Adam. In the beginning, also, there were no limits and boundaries between the different lands; no part of the earth belonged more to one people than to another. In the sight of God there is no difference between the various races. Why should man invent such a prejudice? How can we uphold war caused by an illusion?
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 45

The world of humanity, too, is like a garden, and humankind are like the many-colored flowers. Therefore, different colors constitute an adornment. In the same way, there are many colors in the realm of animals. Doves are of many colors; nevertheless, they live in utmost harmony. They never look at color; instead, they look at the species. How often white doves fly with black ones. In the same way, other birds and varicolored animals never look at color; they look at the species.

Racism, one of the most baneful and persistent evils, is a major barrier to peace. Its practice perpetrates too outrageous a violation of the dignity of human beings to be countenanced under any pretext. Racism retards the unfoldment of the boundless potentialities of its victims, corrupts its perpetrators, and blights human progress. Recognition of the oneness of mankind, implemented by appropriate legal measures, must be universally upheld if this problem is to be overcome.
The Universal House of Justice, The Promise of World Peace

The believers should of course realize that the principle of the oneness of mankind which is the cornerstone of the Message of Bahá’u’lláh is wholly incompatible with all forms of racial prejudice. Loyalty to this foundation principle of the Faith is the paramount duty of every believer and should be therefore whole-hearted and unqualified. For a Bahá’í racial prejudice, in all its forms, is simply a negation of faith, an attitude wholly incompatible with the very spirit and actual teachings of the Cause.
From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer, November 22, 1936; Lights of Guidance, no. 1812

It is a great mistake to believe that because people are illiterate or live primitive lives, they are lacking in either intelligence or sensibility. On the contrary, they may well look on us with the evils of our civilization, with its moral corruption, its ruinous wars, its hypocrisy and conceit, as people who merit watching with both suspicion and contempt. We should meet them as equals, well-wishers, people who admire and respect their ancient descent, and who feel that they will be interested as we are in a living religion and not in the dead forms of present-day churches.

Physical Differences, Spiritual Unity

Differences of color, build and feature are, in ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá’s words, differences “only of blood.” The Writings treat diversity not as a problem to be erased but as the many hues that make a garden beautiful, and beneath that diversity they see one humanity, the fruits of one tree and the leaves of one branch.

So it is with humanity. It is made up of many races, and its peoples are of different color, white, black, yellow, brown and red—but they all come from the same God, and all are servants to Him. This diversity among the children of men has unhappily not the same effect as it has among the vegetable creation, where the spirit shown is more harmonious. Among men exists the diversity of animosity, and it is this that causes war and hatred among the different nations of the world.

The habit of pricing people by rank and status, the old divide of yangban and commoner, today’s gap between “gap” and “eul”, runs deep in East Asian societies. Bahá’u’lláh says that God created all from the same dust so that no one should exalt himself over another.

The Prejudice of Wealth and Poverty

A financier with colossal wealth should not exist whilst near him is a poor man in dire necessity. When we see poverty allowed to reach a condition of starvation it is a sure sign that somewhere we shall find tyranny. Men must bestir themselves in this matter, and no longer delay in altering conditions which bring the misery of grinding poverty to a very large number of the people. The rich must give of their abundance, they must soften their hearts and cultivate a compassionate intelligence, taking thought for those sad ones who are suffering from lack of the very necessities of life.

Do not grieve, dear brother, for being poor, for you are rich instead in faith and in spirit. This is a divine wealth for which the richest of the world will crave for in vain. True we must work hard, earn money and keep our family in happiness and prosperity, but we must always realize that our lives must be devoted to things higher and more sublime. We must remember what great souls, whose lives still inspire hundreds and thousands, were of the poorest in the world.

Gender Prejudice

In East Asia, where the memory of son preference and patriarchal custom is still fresh, Bahá’u’lláh’s declaration that women and men have always been equal before God sounds radical. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likens humanity to a bird with two wings that cannot fly while one wing is weak.

And among the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh is the equality of women and men. The world of humanity has two wings—one is women and the other men. The emancipation of women, the achievement of full equality between the sexes, is one of the most important, though less acknowledged prerequisites of peace. The denial of such equality perpetrates an injustice against one half of the world’s population and promotes in men harmful attitudes and habits that are carried from the family to the workplace, to political life, and ultimately to international relations. There are no grounds, moral, practical, or biological, upon which such denial can be justified. Only as women are welcomed into full partnership in all fields of human endeavor will the moral and psychological climate be created in which international peace can emerge.

In Korea, ties of blood, region and school have long drawn invisible lines around opportunity and trust. The Universal House of Justice writes that attachment to family, clan and nation is natural, but must never be allowed to conflict with the wider loyalty owed to humanity.

National Prejudice

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says patriotic prejudice springs from “absolute ignorance,” noting that God set no frontier between France and Germany. On a divided peninsula, and amid long-standing national feeling among Korea, China and Japan, distinguishing a sane patriotism from unbridled nationalism is an urgent task.

As to the patriotic prejudice, this is also due to absolute ignorance, for the surface of the earth is one native land. Every one can live in any spot on the terrestrial globe. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Tablet to the Hague

Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, CXVII

Unbridled nationalism, as distinguished from a sane and legitimate patriotism, must give way to a wider loyalty, to the love of humanity as a whole. Bahá’u’lláh’s statement is: “The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.” The concept of world citizenship is a direct result of the contraction of the world into a single neighborhood through scientific advances and of the indisputable interdependence of nations. Love of all the world’s peoples does not exclude love of one’s country.
The Universal House of Justice, The Promise of World Peace

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 40

Political Prejudice

Partisan logic and factional hatred divide many societies today. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá names political prejudice among the greatest causes of bitter strife, and recalls history’s lesson that the conqueror shall one day be conquered.

Political prejudice is equally mischievous, it is one of the greatest causes of bitter strife amongst the children of men. There are people who find pleasure in breeding discord, who constantly endeavor to goad their country into making war upon other nations—and why? They think to advantage their own country to the detriment of all others. They send armies to harass and destroy the land, in order to become famous in the world, for the joy of conquest. That it may be said: “Such a country has defeated another, and brought it under the yoke of their stronger, more superior rule.” This victory, bought at the price of much bloodshed, is not lasting! The conqueror shall one day be conquered; and the vanquished ones victorious!
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 45

The Barrier of Language

Bahá’u’lláh foresaw a day when every people would learn one universal auxiliary language alongside its mother tongue. The aim is not to exalt any one tongue but to keep difference of speech from breeding distrust and contempt. In a Korea where English proficiency can mark social class, it invites reflection on the equality of languages.

The Pride of Learning

In East Asian societies where diplomas and examination scores sort people, learning easily becomes a ground for pride. Bahá’u’lláh cites the saying that “knowledge is the most grievous veil between man and his Creator,” and distinguishes true knowledge, which yields patience and love, from the false, which yields arrogance and conceit.

Prejudice as the Cause of War

Writing in 1919 to a peace organization at The Hague, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá observed that in six thousand years humanity has never been free of war, and that every war sprang from religious, racial, political or patriotic prejudice. On a peninsula scarred by war, this diagnosis is not abstract.

For a period of 6,000 years history informs us about the world of humanity. During these 6,000 years the world of humanity has not been free from war, strife, murder and bloodthirstiness. In every period war has been waged in one country or another and that war was due to either religious prejudice, racial prejudice, political prejudice or patriotic prejudice. It has therefore been ascertained and proved that all prejudices are destructive of the human edifice.

The Hell of Prejudice

The Writings teach that hell is less a distant fire than a heart filled with hatred in place of love; in that sense prejudice is a hell already suffered in this world. Bahá’u’lláh calls religious fanaticism and hatred “a world-devouring fire” which only the Hand of Divine power can quench.

The Hell of “I Am Right, You Are Wrong”

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls the notion that “we ourselves are right and everybody else wrong” the greatest of all obstacles on the path to unity. Bahá’u’lláh bids us remember our own faults before the faults of others. In an age of constant argument and camp warfare, this is where spiritual practice begins.

Blind Imitation

In Islamic tradition taqlíd means following the rulings of a recognized authority; in Confucian cultures too, following precedent and custom was a virtue. Without belittling tradition as such, the Writings insist that God gave humanity reason not so that it might blindly copy its forebears.

God has not intended man to imitate blindly his fathers and ancestors. He has endowed him with mind, or the faculty of reasoning, by the exercise of which he is to investigate and discover the truth, and that which he finds real and true he must accept. He must not be an imitator or blind follower of any soul. He must not rely implicitly upon the opinion of any man without investigation; nay, each soul must seek intelligently and independently, arriving at a real conclusion and bound only by that reality. The greatest cause of bereavement and disheartening in the world of humanity is ignorance based upon blind imitation. It is due to this that wars and battles prevail; from this cause hatred and animosity arise continually among mankind.

The first of Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings, as ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá often listed them, is the independent investigation of truth. It is not a skepticism that believes nothing, but a call to see, hear and understand for oneself, with justice and detachment.

The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice; turn not away therefrom if thou desirest Me, and neglect it not that I may confide in thee. By its aid thou shalt see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and shalt know of thine own knowledge and not through the knowledge of thy neighbor. Ponder this in thy heart; how it behooveth thee to be. Verily justice is My gift to thee and the sign of My loving-kindness. Set it then before thine eyes.

The essence of these words is this: they that tread the path of faith, they that thirst for the wine of certitude, must cleanse themselves of all that is earthly—their ears from idle talk, their minds from vain imaginings, their hearts from worldly affections, their eyes from that which perisheth. They should put their trust in God, and, holding fast unto Him, follow in His way. Then will they be made worthy of the effulgent glories of the sun of divine knowledge and understanding, and become the recipients of a grace that is infinite and unseen, inasmuch as man can never hope to attain unto the knowledge of the All-Glorious, can never quaff from the stream of divine knowledge and wisdom, can never enter the abode of immortality, nor partake of the cup of divine nearness and favor, unless and until he ceases to regard the words and deeds of mortal men as a standard for the true understanding and recognition of God and His Prophets.
Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitáb-i-Íqán, Part One

Another new principle revealed by Bahá’u’lláh is the injunction to investigate truth—that is to say, no man should blindly follow his ancestors and forefathers. Nay, each must see with his own eyes, hear with his own ears and investigate the truth himself in order that he may follow the truth instead of blind acquiescence and imitation of ancestral beliefs.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 2 December 1912

Know Yourself

“Know thyself” was the Delphic maxim and Socrates’ starting point, echoed in the East in the tradition of self-examination. Bahá’u’lláh places self-knowledge first among His Ṭarázát: to know what leads to loftiness or lowliness. To know oneself is finally to discover the gems God has placed within.

Self has really two meanings, or is used in two senses, in the Bahá’í writings: one is self, the identity of the individual created by God. This is the self mentioned in such passages as ‘he hath known God who hath known himself etc.’. The other self is the ego, the dark, animalistic heritage each one of us has, the lower nature that can develop into a monster of selfishness, brutality, lust and so on. It is this self we must struggle against, or this side of our natures, in order to strengthen and free the spirit within us and help it to attain perfection.

Knowing One’s Own Ignorance

Socrates counted himself wiser only in knowing that he did not know; Confucius said that to know what you know and to admit what you do not is knowledge. Bahá’u’lláh says the highest station a seeker of God can reach is the acknowledgment of his own impotence. Confessing ignorance is not the end of wisdom but its beginning.

The Existence of the Human Spirit

Materialism holds that what cannot be seen or touched does not exist. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá answers that the mineral’s inability to grasp the plant does not disprove the plant, and so the failure to perceive spirit does not disprove spirit. The mystery of sleep and dreams is offered as further evidence that the spirit is other than the body.

In the same way, if materialists do not believe in the existence of the soul, their unbelief does not prove that there is no such realm as the world of spirit. The very existence of man’s intelligence proves his immortality; moreover, darkness proves the presence of light, for without light there would be no shadow. Poverty proves the existence of riches, for, without riches, how could we measure poverty? Ignorance proves that knowledge exists, for without knowledge how could there be ignorance?
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 29

A rational proof for the immortality of the spirit is this, that no effect can be produced by a non-existent thing; that is, it is impossible that any effect should appear from absolute nothingness. For the effect of a thing is secondary to its existence, and that which is secondary is conditioned upon the existence of that which is primary. So from a non-existent sun no rays can shine; from a non-existent sea no waves can surge; from a non-existent cloud no rain can fall; from a non-existent tree no fruit can appear; from a non-existent man nothing can be manifested or produced. Therefore, so long as the effects of existence are visible, they prove that the author of that effect exists.

The Unlimited Power of the Human Spirit

Sun, stars and oceans are all captives of natural law, yet man discovers nature’s hidden forces and governs them. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá sees this discovering power as evidence of a spirit in man that transcends nature, and Bahá’u’lláh adds that education alone can draw its treasures forth.

The Rational Soul

What philosophers call the rational soul, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá identifies with the human spirit. It discovers the realities of things, yet like a polished mirror it cannot reveal the divine mysteries until the light of the spirit of faith falls upon it, a point of contact with the reason-centered traditions of East Asian learning.

The human spirit, which distinguishes man from the animal, is the rational soul, and these two terms—the human spirit and the rational soul—designate one and the same thing. This spirit, which in the terminology of the philosophers is called the rational soul, encompasses all things and as far as human capacity permits, discovers their realities and becomes aware of the properties and effects, the characteristics and conditions of earthly things. But the human spirit, unless it be assisted by the spirit of faith, cannot become acquainted with the divine mysteries and the heavenly realities. It is like a mirror which, although clear, bright, and polished, is still in need of light. Not until a sunbeam falls upon it can it discover the divine mysteries.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Some Answered Questions, no. 55

Answer: Some hold that the body is the substance and that it subsists by itself, and that the spirit is an accident which subsists through the substance of the body. The truth, however, is that the rational soul is the substance through which the body subsists. If the accident—the body—is destroyed, the substance—the spirit—remains.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Some Answered Questions, no. 66

Secondly, the rational soul, or the human spirit, does not subsist through this body by inherence—that is to say, it does not enter it; for inherence and entrance are characteristics of bodies, and the rational soul is sanctified above this. It never entered this body to begin with, that it should require, upon leaving it, some other abode. No, the connection of the spirit with the body is even as the connection of this lamp with a mirror. If the mirror is polished and perfected, the light of the lamp appears therein, and if the mirror is broken or covered with dust, the light remains concealed.

The Spiritual and Material Aspects of Humanity

Within each person are a higher nature that draws near to God and a lower nature that lives for the world alone. As Neo-Confucian thought weighed the mind of the Way against the human mind, the Writings speak of the tension between these two natures, and teach that when the spiritual governs the material, man becomes the crown of creation.

In man there are two natures: his spiritual or higher nature and his material or lower nature. In one he approaches God, in the other he lives for the world alone.

The reality of man is his thought, not his material body. The thought force and the animal force are partners. Although man is part of the animal creation, he possesses a power of thought superior to all other created beings.

Man has two powers; and his development, two aspects. One power is connected with the material world, and by it he is capable of material advancement. The other power is spiritual, and through its development his inner, potential nature is awakened. These powers are like two wings. Both must be developed, for flight is impossible with one wing.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 25 April 1912

But on the other hand, when man does not open his mind and heart to the blessing of the spirit, but turns his soul towards the material side, towards the bodily part of his nature, then is he fallen from his high place and he becomes inferior to the inhabitants of the lower animal kingdom. In this case the man is in a sorry plight!
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 31

The ego is the animal in us, the heritage of the flesh which is full of selfish desires. By obeying the laws of God, seeking to live the life laid down in our teachings, and prayer and struggle, we can subdue our egos. We call people ‘saints’ who have achieved the highest degree of mastery over their ego.

According to the Bahá’í conception, the soul of man, or in other words his inner spiritual self or reality, is not dualistic. There is no such thing, as the Zoroastrians believe, as a double reality in man, a definite higher self and a lower self. These two tendencies for good or evil are but manifestations of a single reality or self. The latter is capable of development in either way. All depends fundamentally on the training or education which man receives. Human nature is made up of possibilities both for good and evil. True religion can enable it to soar in the highest realm of the spirit, while its absence can, as we already witness around us, cause it to fall to the lowest depths of degradation and misery.

The Human Being as a Spiritual Being

The saying that we are not human beings having a spiritual experience but spiritual beings having a human experience is often attributed to Teilhard de Chardin. Earlier, in Paris, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá said: “Man is, in reality, a spiritual being, and only when he lives in the spirit is he truly happy.” Made master of the material world, man has no reason to become its slave.

As for the spiritual perfections, they are man’s birthright and belong to him alone of all creation. Man is, in reality, a spiritual being, and only when he lives in the spirit is he truly happy. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 23

The Nature of the Soul

Bahá’u’lláh calls the soul “a sign of God, a heavenly gem” whose reality the most learned have failed to grasp. Faithful to God, it reflects His light; unfaithful, it becomes a victim to self and passion.

Thou hast asked Me concerning the nature of the soul. Know, verily, that the soul is a sign of God, a heavenly gem whose reality the most learned of men hath failed to grasp, and whose mystery no mind, however acute, can ever hope to unravel. It is the first among all created things to declare the excellence of its Creator, the first to recognize His glory, to cleave to His truth, and to bow down in adoration before Him. If it be faithful to God, it will reflect His light, and will, eventually, return unto Him. If it fail, however, in its allegiance to its Creator, it will become a victim to self and passion, and will, in the end, sink in their depths.
Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, LXXXII

Verily I say, the human soul is exalted above all egress and regress. It is still, and yet it soareth; it moveth, and yet it is still. Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, LXXXII

Body and Mind

If the mind clouds when the body sickens, how can the soul outlive the body? Bahá’u’lláh answers that weakness arises from hindrances between soul and body, not from the soul itself. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likens the connection of body and spirit to a mirror and the sun: break the mirror, and the sun shines on.

Know thou that the soul of man is exalted above, and is independent of, all infirmities of body or mind. That a sick person showeth signs of weakness is due to the hindrances that interpose themselves between his soul and his body, for the soul itself remaineth unaffected by any bodily ailments. Consider the light of the lamp. Though an external object may interfere with its radiance, the light itself continueth to shine with undiminished power. In like manner, every malady afflicting the body of man is an impediment that preventeth the soul from manifesting its inherent might and power. When it leaveth the body, however, it will evince such ascendancy, and reveal such influence, as no force on earth can equal. Every pure, every refined and sanctified soul will be endowed with tremendous power, and shall rejoice with exceeding gladness.

Consider the lamp which is hidden under a bushel. Though its light be shining, yet its radiance is concealed from men. Likewise, consider the sun which hath been obscured by the clouds. Observe how its splendor appeareth to have diminished, when in reality the source of that light hath remained unchanged. The soul of man should be likened unto this sun, and all things on earth should be regarded as his body. So long as no external impediment interveneth between them, the body will, in its entirety, continue to reflect the light of the soul, and to be sustained by its power.

Prayer is the soul’s conversation with its Maker, direct and without intermediary, the food that sustains the life of the spirit. Like Korea’s dawn-prayer tradition, the Writings hold the stillness of dawn and midnight especially precious for prayer.

Prayer is the essential spiritual conversation of the soul with its Maker, direct and without intermediation. It is the spiritual food that sustains the life of the spirit. For the core of religious faith is that mystic feeling which unites man with God. This state of spiritual communion can be brought about and maintained by means of meditation and prayer. And this is the reason why Bahá’u’lláh has so much stressed the importance of worship. … The believers, particularly the young ones, should therefore fully realize the necessity of praying. For prayer is absolutely indispensable to their inner spiritual development, and this, as already stated, is the very foundation and purpose of the religion of God.

The important thing that should always be borne in mind is that with the exception of certain specific obligatory prayers, Bahá’u’lláh has given us no strict or special rulings in matters of worship whether in the Temple or elsewhere.

It is not sufficient to pray diligently for guidance, but this prayer must be followed by meditation as to the best methods of action and then action itself. 29. 명상

Meditation

In an East Asia shaped by Seon and Zen, meditation is familiar ground. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls it speaking with one’s own spirit and “the key for opening the doors of mysteries,” and urges us to turn the mirror of meditation heavenward rather than toward earthly things. The Faith prescribes no set form, leaving the manner to each person.

It is an axiomatic fact that while you meditate you are speaking with your own spirit. In that state of mind you put certain questions to your spirit and the spirit answers: the light breaks forth and the reality is revealed.

Meditation is the key for opening the doors of mysteries. In that state man abstracts himself: in that state man withdraws himself from all outside objects; in that subjective mood he is immersed in the ocean of spiritual life and can unfold the secrets of things-in-themselves. To illustrate this, think of man as endowed with two kinds of sight; when the power of insight is being used the outward power of vision does not see.

There are no set forms of meditation prescribed in the teachings, no plan, as such, for inner development. The friends are urged—nay enjoined—to pray, and they also should meditate, but the manner of doing the latter is left entirely to the individual.

Through meditation the doors of deeper knowledge and inspiration may be opened. Naturally, if one meditates as a Bahá’í he is connected with the Source; if a man believing in God meditates he is tuning in to the power and mercy of God; but we cannot say that any inspiration which a person, not knowing Bahá’u’lláh, or not believing in God, receives is merely from his own ego. Meditation is very important, and the Guardian sees no reason why the friends should not be taught to meditate, but they should guard against superstitious or foolish ideas creeping into it.

Bahá’u’lláh has specified no procedures to be followed in meditation, and individual believers are free to do as they wish in this area, provided that they remain in harmony with the teachings, but such activities are purely personal and should under no circumstances be confused with those actions which Bahá’u’lláh Himself considered to be of fundamental importance for our spiritual growth. Some believers may find that it is beneficial to them to follow a particular method of meditation, and they may certainly do so, but such methods should not be taught at Bahá’í Summer Schools or be carried out during a session of the School because, while they may appeal to some people, they may repel others.

Asked “What is the purpose of our lives?”, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá answered in a word: “To acquire virtues.” Bahá’u’lláh names the purpose of creation as knowing the Creator and attaining His Presence, and carrying forward an ever-advancing civilization. Personal cultivation and social progress meet in a single purpose.

East Asian funeral customs have long wrapped death in grief and dread. Bahá’u’lláh asks: “I have made death a messenger of joy to thee. Wherefore dost thou grieve?” To the faithful, death is the hand that offers the cup of life itself.

These human conditions may be likened to the matrix of the mother from which a child is to be born into the spacious outer world. At first the infant finds it very difficult to reconcile itself to its new existence. It cries as if not wishing to be separated from its narrow abode and imagining that life is restricted to that limited space. It is reluctant to leave its home, but nature forces it into this world. Having come into its new conditions, it finds that it has passed from darkness into a sphere of radiance; from gloomy and restricted surroundings it has been transferred to a spacious and delightful environment. Its nourishment was the blood of the mother; now it finds delicious food to enjoy. Its new life is filled with brightness and beauty; it looks with wonder and delight upon the mountains, meadows and fields of green, the rivers and fountains, the wonderful stars; it breathes the life-quickening atmosphere; and then it praises God for its release from the confinement of its former condition and attainment to the freedom of a new realm. This analogy expresses the relation of the temporal world to the life hereafter—the transition of the soul of man from darkness and uncertainty to the light and reality of the eternal Kingdom. At first it is very difficult to welcome death, but after attaining its new condition the soul is grateful, for it has been released from the bondage of the limited to enjoy the liberties of the unlimited.

Consider how a being, in the world of the womb, was deaf of ear and blind of eye, and mute of tongue; how he was bereft of any perceptions at all. But once, out of that world of darkness, he passed into this world of light, then his eye saw, his ear heard, his tongue spoke. In the same way, once he hath hastened away from this mortal place into the Kingdom of God, then he will be born in the spirit; then the eye of his perception will open, the ear of his soul will hearken, and all the truths of which he was ignorant before will be made plain and clear.

The stone exists and so does man, yet beside man the stone is as nothing. In the same way, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says, a life untouched by the Divine Spirit is, in the eyes of the holy, “utter non-existence and death.” To awaken in spirit before the body dies is where eternal life begins.

The Progress of the Soul after Death

Bahá’u’lláh says the soul, after leaving the body, will continue to progress until it attains the presence of God. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá explains that this progress comes through God’s grace, the prayers of others, and good deeds done in the soul’s name. The East Asian reverence for ancestors here finds a new form: prayer for those who have passed on.

Heaven and Hell as States of the Soul

In the Writings heaven and hell are not geographical places but states of the soul: nearness to God is the true paradise, remoteness from Him the fire. Ignorance, falsehood and indifference to God are already “subtle torments” in themselves, a view that resonates with Buddhist readings of pure land and hell as states of mind.

We must bear with one another. It is only through suffering that the nobility of character can make itself manifest. The energy we expend in enduring the intolerance of some individuals of our community is not lost. It is transformed into fortitude, steadfastness and magnanimity. The lives of Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá are the best examples for this. Sacrifices in the path of one’s religion produce always immortal results, ‘Out of the ashes rises the phoenix’.

Suffering, of one kind or another, seems to be the portion of man in this world. Even the Beloved Ones, the Prophets of God, have never been exempt from the ills that are to be found in our world; poverty, disease, bereavement,–they seem to be part of the polish God employs to make us finer, and enable us to reflect more of His attributes! No doubt in the future, when the foundation of society is laid according to the Divine plan, and men become truly spiritualized, a vast amount of our present ills and problems will be remedied. We who toil now are paving the way for a far better world, and this knowledge must uphold and strengthen us through every trial.
