Reason and Religion
The Search for Truth
Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings begin with the independent search for truth. East Asia’s reverence for ancestors and teachers is a noble thing, yet truth cannot simply be inherited; each soul must see it with its own eyes.

If a man would succeed in his search after truth, he must, in the first place, shut his eyes to all the traditional superstitions of the past.

The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice; turn not away therefrom if thou desirest Me, and neglect it not that I may confide in thee. By its aid thou shalt see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and shalt know of thine own knowledge and not through the knowledge of thy neighbor.

Therefore it is imperative that we should renounce our own particular prejudices and superstitions if we earnestly desire to seek the truth. Unless we make a distinction in our minds between dogma, superstition and prejudice on the one hand, and truth on the other, we cannot succeed. When we are in earnest in our search for anything, we look for it everywhere. This principle we must carry out in our search for truth.

But, O my brother, when a true seeker determineth to take the step of search in the path leading to the knowledge of the Ancient of Days, he must, before all else, cleanse and purify his heart, which is the seat of the revelation of the inner mysteries of God, from the obscuring dust of all acquired knowledge, and the allusions of the embodiments of satanic fancy. … He must so cleanse his heart that no remnant of either love or hate may linger therein, lest that love blindly incline him to error, or that hate repel him away from the truth.

The first is the independent investigation of truth; for blind imitation of the past will stunt the mind. But once every soul inquireth into truth, society will be freed from the darkness of continually repeating the past. 2.
The Tool of Truth
In the Bahá’í Writings reason and understanding are not the enemies of faith but God’s first gift to humanity. Korea’s long love of learning resonates naturally with this teaching.

First and foremost among these favors, which the Almighty hath conferred upon man, is the gift of understanding. His purpose in conferring such a gift is none other except to enable His creature to know and recognize the one true God—exalted be His glory. This gift giveth man the power to discern the truth in all things, leadeth him to that which is right, and helpeth him to discover the secrets of creation.

God has endowed man with reason that he may perceive what is true. If we insist that such and such a subject is not to be reasoned out and tested according to the established logical modes of the intellect, what is the use of the reason which God has given man?

All blessings are divine in origin, but none can be compared with this power of intellectual investigation and research, which is an eternal gift producing fruits of unending delight. Man is ever partaking of these fruits. All other blessings are temporary; this is an everlasting possession.

How can man believe that which he knows to be opposed to reason? Is this possible? Can the heart accept that which reason denies? Reason is the first faculty of man, and the religion of God is in harmony with it. 3.
The Requirement to Use Reason
Faith does not mean ceasing to think; it means thinking all the way through. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that belief contrary to reason can yield nothing but wavering and vacillation.

God has endowed man with intelligence and reason whereby he is required to determine the verity of questions and propositions. If religious beliefs and opinions are found contrary to the standards of science, they are mere superstitions and imaginations; for the antithesis of knowledge is ignorance, and the child of ignorance is superstition. Unquestionably there must be agreement between true religion and science. If a question be found contrary to reason, faith and belief in it are impossible, and there is no outcome but wavering and vacillation.

If religion does not agree with science, it is superstition and ignorance; for God has endowed man with reason in order that he may perceive reality. The foundations of religion are reasonable. God has created us with intelligence to perceive them. God has bestowed the gift of mind upon man in order that he may weigh every fact or truth presented to him and adjudge whether it be reasonable. That which conforms to his reason he may accept as true, while that which reason and science cannot sanction may be discarded as imagination and superstition, as a phantom and not reality. 4.
The Unreliability of Reason
The same Writings that honor reason warn against making it all‑sufficient. The history of learning, in which yesterday’s certainty is overturned today, shows that reason is precious but not infallible.

As to the second criterion—reason—this likewise is unreliable and not to be depended upon. This human world is an ocean of varying opinions. If reason is the perfect standard and criterion of knowledge, why are opinions at variance and why do philosophers disagree so completely with each other? … In the future much that is announced and accepted as true now will be rejected and disproved. And so it will continue ad infinitum.

The second criterion is that of the intellect, which was the principal criterion of comprehension for those pillars of wisdom, the ancient philosophers. They deduced things through the power of the mind and relied on rational arguments: All their arguments are based upon reason. But despite this, they diverged greatly in their opinions. They would even change their own views: For twenty years they would deduce the existence of something through rational arguments, and then afterwards they would disprove the same, again through rational arguments.

It is therefore evident that the criterion of reason is imperfect, as proven by the disagreements existing between the ancient philosophers as well as by their want of consistency and their propensity to change their own views. For if the criterion of intellect were perfect, all should have been united in their thoughts and agreed in their opinions.

Therefore, human reason, as already pointed out, is by its very nature finite and faulty in conclusions. It cannot surround the Reality Itself, the Infinite Word. Inasmuch as the source of traditions and interpretations is human reason, and human reason is faulty, how can we depend upon its findings for real knowledge?

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. If they do not set it forth with conviction, they are failing in their duty to expose their ideas sincerely and graphically; but because they believe something firmly themselves does not in any way imply that what they believe is the truth. Between the truth which comes from God through His Prophets, and the glimmerings, often misunderstood and misinterpreted, of truth which come from the philosophers and thinkers, there is an immense difference. We must never, under any circumstances, confuse the two. 5.
The Limits of the Senses
Believing only what one sees can look scientific, yet the eye is fooled by mirages and mirrors and once believed the earth stood still. The senses are precious instruments, not the final judges of reality.

The first criterion is that of the senses; that is, all that the eye, the ear, the taste, the smell, and the touch perceive is called “sensible”. At present all the European philosophers hold this to be the most perfect criterion. They claim that the greatest of all criteria is that of the senses, and they regard it as sacrosanct. And yet the criterion of the senses is defective, as it can err.

In Europe I told the philosophers and scientists of materialism that the criterion of the senses is not reliable. For instance, consider a mirror and the images reflected in it. These images have no actual corporeal existence. Yet if you had never seen a mirror, you would firmly insist and believe that they were real. The eye sees a mirage upon the desert as a lake of water, but there is no reality in it. … In brief, the senses are continually deceived, and we are unable to separate that which is reality from that which is not.
Know, therefore, that what the people possess and believe to be true is liable to error. For if in proving or disproving a thing a proof drawn from the evidence of the senses is advanced, this criterion is clearly imperfect; if a rational proof is adduced, the same holds true; and likewise if a traditional proof is given. Thus it is clear that man does not possess any criterion of knowledge that can be relied upon. 6.
The Four Criteria of Knowledge
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá examines one by one the four criteria on which people rely when they claim to know: the senses, reason, scriptural tradition and inspiration. Each alone can err; truth is best tested by all of them together and sought through the grace of the Holy Spirit.

There are only four accepted criteria of comprehension, that is, four criteria whereby the realities of things are understood.

The third criterion is that of tradition, that is, the text of the Sacred Scriptures, when it is said, “God said thus in the Torah”, or “God said thus in the Gospel.” This criterion is not perfect either, because the traditions must be understood by the mind. … for the mind is like a balance, and the meanings contained in the texts are like the objects to be weighed. If the balance is untrue, how can the weight be ascertained?

The fourth criterion I have named is inspiration through which it is claimed the reality of knowledge is attainable. What is inspiration? It is the influx of the human heart. But what are satanic promptings which afflict mankind? They are the influx of the heart also. How shall we differentiate between them?

But a statement presented to the mind accompanied by proofs which the senses can perceive to be correct, which the faculty of reason can accept, which is in accord with traditional authority and sanctioned by the promptings of the heart, can be adjudged and relied upon as perfectly correct, for it has been proved and tested by all the standards of judgment and found to be complete. When we apply but one test, there are possibilities of mistake. This is self-evident and manifest.

That truth is often imparted through dreams no one who is familiar with history, especially religious history, can doubt. At the same time dreams and vision are always coloured and influenced more or less by the mind of the dreamer and we must beware of attaching too much importance to them. The purer and more free from prejudice and desire our hearts and minds become, the more likely is it that our dreams will convey reliable truth, but if we have strong prejudices, personal likings and aversions, bad feelings or evil motives, these will warp and distort any inspirational impression that comes to us. … We should test impressions we get through dreams, visions or inspirations, by comparing them with the revealed Word and seeing whether they are in full harmony therewith.

All created beings embody the potentiality of material perfection, but the power of intellectual investigation and scientific acquisition is a higher virtue specialized to man alone. … The development and progress of a nation is according to the measure and degree of that nation’s scientific attainments. Through this means its greatness is continually increased, and day by day the welfare and prosperity of its people are assured.

Knowledge is as wings to man’s life, and a ladder for his ascent. Its acquisition is incumbent upon everyone. The knowledge of such sciences, however, should be acquired as can profit the peoples of the earth, and not those which begin with words and end with words. Great indeed is the claim of scientists and craftsmen on the peoples of the world.

‘Abdu’l-Bahá does often state that the medical science will much improve. With the appearance of every Revelation a new insight is created in man and this in turn expresses itself in the growth of science. The chief idols in the desecrated temple of mankind are none other than the triple gods of Nationalism, Racialism and Communism, at whose altars governments and peoples, whether democratic or totalitarian, at peace or at war, of the East or of the West, Christian or Islamic, are, in various forms and in different degrees, now worshiping.

There are so many movements in the world at present akin to various Bahá’í principles; indeed we can almost say that the principles of Bahá’u’lláh have been adapted by thinking people all over this planet. But what they do not realize, and what the Bahá’ís must therefore teach them, is that these principles, however perfect, will never be able to create a new society unless and until they are animated by the spirit which alone changes the hearts and characters of men, and that spirit is recognition of their divine origin in a teacher sent from God, in other words, Bahá’u’lláh. When they recognize this, their hearts will change and a change of heart is what people need, not merely a change of intellectual outlook.

But when we hear this accusation let us not forget that those who make it are usually idealistic materialists to whom material good is the only ‘real’ good, whereas we know that the working of the material world is merely a reflection of spiritual conditions and until the spiritual conditions can be changed there can be no lasting change for the better in material affairs. 16.
The Two Meanings of the Word Religion
The word religion can mean two things: the living teachings revealed by God, and the customs, creeds and institutions that accumulate upon them over time. Many who reject religion may in fact be rejecting the second.

Religion, moreover, is not a series of beliefs, a set of customs; religion is the teachings of the Lord God, teachings which constitute the very life of humankind, which urge high thoughts upon the mind, refine the character, and lay the groundwork for man’s everlasting honor.

Many religious leaders have grown to think that the importance of religion lies mainly in the adherence to a collection of certain dogmas and the practice of rites and ceremonies! The Success of Religion
Seen fairly, the great religions have bound scattered tribes into peoples and turned barbarism into civilization. The shaping of Korean culture and morals by Buddhism and Confucianism is one example.

Wars and oppression committed in religion’s name have turned many away from religion itself. The Bahá’í Writings do not hide this failure; they locate its cause not in God but in human beings who abandoned the teachings.

If it is made the cause of darkness through human misunderstanding and ignorance, it would be better to do without it.

Religion is Deeds
Religion is not claiming that I am right but searching for what is right and putting it into action. As the Korean phrase eonhaeng‑ilchi, the unity of word and deed, suggests, Bahá’u’lláh finds the essence of faith in few words and many deeds.

the fundamental purpose of all religions–including our own–is to bring man nearer to God, and to change his character, which is of the utmost importance. Too much emphasis is often laid on the social and economic aspects of the Teachings; but the moral aspect cannot be overemphasized. 26.
The Need for an Educator
A society that values education as highly as Korea does will readily grasp this argument. As land needs a farmer and trees a gardener, humanity needs a divine Educator who can give material, human and spiritual education together.

Their Secret is the Same Secret
Asked which Prophet is greatest, Bahá’u’lláh answers that Their essence is one and Their secret the same secret. Before these words, contests of rank between religions lose their ground.

The Oneness of Religion

Each of the divine religions embodies two kinds of ordinances. The first is those which concern spiritual susceptibilities, the development of moral principles and the quickening of the conscience of man. Progressive Revelation
As the moon waxes and wanes yet its light is one, God’s revelation unfolds ever more fully according to the receptivity of each age. That religious truth is relative, not absolute, and revelation progressive, not final, is a fundamental Bahá’í principle.

The measure of the revelation of the Prophets of God in this world, however, must differ. … Their Revelation may be likened unto the light of the moon that sheddeth its radiance upon the earth. The Station of the Manifestations
East Asian history knew ideas such as the king being the Buddha himself. By setting out clearly the twofold station of the Manifestations of God, Bahá’u’lláh resolves both the confusion that deifies rulers and the confusion that reduces the Prophets to ordinary men.

These Manifestations of God have each a twofold station. One is the station of pure abstraction and essential unity. Religion Was Always Universal
God’s grace has never been confined to one people or region. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá speaks with respect of the original teachings of the Buddha and Confucius, showing that East Asia’s traditions too were a stream of divine guidance.

Religion Confined by Nations
Ancient kingdoms needed codes of law to support royal power, and the source of those codes was religion. As unity grew from family to tribe to city‑state to nation, religion’s confinement to one community was a necessary stage, but humanity now stands before the next one.

A Religion Beyond National Interest
Much in history has been justified in the name of national interest, and even religion has often served it. Bahá’u’lláh asks us to look beyond the boundaries of interest drawn by human beings to the good of the whole world as God sees it. Sane patriotism remains precious, but it must not stand in the way of love for the world.

The Decline and Renewal of Religion

The thing for us to focus on is the glory of the Cause and the Power of Bahá’u’lláh which can make of a mere drop a surging sea!

He would advise her to turn her thoughts determinedly and intelligently– by that I mean unemotionally–to God, realising that He is forgiving, that in one moment He can, through His blessed mercy, take away our sense of failure and help us to do better in the future–if we sincerely wish to; to turn to Him in prayer and seek to draw closer to Him; and to accept His Will and submit her own desires and opinions to His wish and plan for her.
