East Asia and the World

Where the Light Dawns

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá observes that every great spiritual Teacher arose in the East. This is not a claim of Eastern superiority but a reminder that those who live where the light first dawned bear a responsibility to share it.

In the past, as in the present, the Spiritual Sun of Truth has always shone from the horizon of the East.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 4

Abraham appeared in the East. In the East Moses arose to lead and teach the people. On the Eastern horizon arose the Lord Christ. Muḥammad was sent to an Eastern nation. The Báb arose in the Eastern land of Persia. Bahá’u’lláh lived and taught in the East. All the great Spiritual Teachers arose in the Eastern world.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 4

The West has always received spiritual enlightenment from the East. The Song of the Kingdom is first heard in the East, but in the West the greater volume of sound bursts upon the listening ears.

I have come from distant countries of the Orient where the lights of heaven have ever shone forth, from regions where the Manifestations of God have appeared and the radiance and power of God have been revealed to mankind. The purpose and intention of my visit is that, perchance, a bond of unity and agreement may be established between the East and West, that divine love may encompass all nations, divine radiance enlighten both continents and the bounties of the Holy Spirit revivify the body of the world.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 9 June 1912

East and West Must Unite

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá’s words of a century ago speak directly to East Asia today. The East received science and technology from the West; now it may return the spiritual depth the West thirsts for. True civilization is born of this exchange.

In these days the East is in need of material progress and the West is in want of a spiritual idea. It would be well for the West to turn to the East for illumination, and to give in exchange its scientific knowledge. There must be this interchange of gifts.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 4

The East and the West must unite to give to each other what is lacking. This union will bring about a true civilization, where the spiritual is expressed and carried out in the material.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 4

Receiving thus the one from the other the greatest harmony will prevail, all people will be united, a state of great perfection will be attained, there will be a firm cementing, and this world will become a shining mirror for the reflection of the attributes of God.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 4

The East and West, the Orient and Occident, shall be united. If we search history, we shall not find the record of such an occasion where one has traveled from the far East to the far West to address a meeting of this universal character. This is a miracle of the twentieth century which proves that the seemingly impossible may become real and possible in the kingdom of man.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 6 May 1912

Two Wings

Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan achieved astonishing material progress within a generation or two. Yet ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that, as a bird cannot fly on one wing, material civilization alone cannot reach perfection. East Asia’s next task is to strengthen the spiritual wing.

For man two wings are necessary. One wing is physical power and material civilization; the other is spiritual power and divine civilization. With one wing only, flight is impossible. Two wings are essential. Therefore, no matter how much material civilization advances, it cannot attain to perfection except through the uplift of spiritual civilization.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 14 April 1912

These powers are like two wings. Both must be developed, for flight is impossible with one wing. Praise be to God! Material advancement has been evident in the world, but there is need of spiritual advancement in like proportion. We must strive unceasingly and without rest to accomplish the development of the spiritual nature in man, and endeavor with tireless energy to advance humanity toward the nobility of its true and intended station.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 25 April 1912

These are momentous times. The institutions of the old world order are crumbling and in disarray. Materialism, greed, corruption and conflict are infecting the social order with a grave malaise from which it is helpless to extricate itself.
The Universal House of Justice, 2 September 1982, to the Asian-Australasian Bahá’í Conference

Indeed, the chief reason for the evils now rampant in society is the lack of spirituality. The materialistic civilization of our age has so much absorbed the energy and interest of mankind that people in general do no longer feel the necessity of raising themselves above the forces and conditions of their daily material existence. … The universal crisis affecting mankind is, therefore, essentially spiritual in its causes.

Japan: Swift Progress, Spiritual Capacity

Meeting Japanese young men in California in 1912, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá praised their nation’s remarkable progress and affirmed that a people so advanced materially must also possess capacity for spiritual development. He also held up Japan’s modernization as an example of the power of education.

For a long time I have entertained a desire to meet some of the Japanese friends. That nation has achieved extraordinary progress in a short space of time—a progress and development which have astonished the world. Inasmuch as they have advanced in material civilization, they must assuredly possess the capacity for spiritual development.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 7 October 1912

According to report the people of the Japanese nation are not prejudiced. They investigate reality. Wherever they find truth, they prove to be its lovers. They are not attached tenaciously to blind imitations of ancient beliefs and dogmas. Therefore, it is my great desire to discourse with them upon a subject in order that the unity and blending together of the nations of the East and the nations of the West may be furthered and accomplished.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 7 October 1912

Japan has opened its eyes and adopted the techniques of contemporary progress and civilization, promoting sciences and industries of use to the public, and striving to the utmost of their power and competence until public opinion was focused on reform. This government has currently advanced to such a point that, although its population is only one-sixth, or even one-tenth, that of China, it has recently challenged the latter government, and China has finally been forced to come to terms.

In the Tablets of the Divine Plan (1916–1917) ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá Himself named Korea, with Japan and China, among the lands to which the teachings must be carried. The Korean Bahá’í community, begun with Agnes Alexander’s visit in 1921, formed its National Spiritual Assembly in 1964.

The manner in which the Bahá’í community of Mongolia, so young and so full of vitality, has taken its affairs in hand is exhilarating. At the same time, their Bahá’í classes, open to children from Bahá’í and non-Bahá’í families alike, are being received with great enthusiasm, presenting them with extensive teaching opportunities.

Consider how throughout history many a king has sat on his throne as a conqueror. Among them were Hulágú Khán and Tamerlane, who took over the vast continent of Asia, and Alexander of Macedon and Napoleon I, who stretched their arrogant fists over three of the earth’s five continents. And what was gained by all their mighty victories? Was any country made to flourish, did any happiness result, did any throne stand? Or was it rather that those reigning houses lost their power? Except that Asia went up in the flame of many battles and fell away to ashes, Changíz’s Hulágú, the warlord, gathered no fruit from all his conquests.

Shoghi Effendi foresaw the “spiritual receptivity” of the peoples of Southeast Asia and the role they would play in humanity’s future. Raised in the noble teachings of Buddhism, they understand the need for coherence between the material and the spiritual; in 2017 the first local House of Worship was dedicated in Battambang, Cambodia.

Confucius, Renewer of Ancient Morals

Confucius taught humaneness (ren), ritual propriety (li), filial devotion and learning as the path to true character and right government, and his teaching shaped East Asian families and states for two and a half millennia. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá describes him not as the founder of a new religion but as one who “renewed the ancient conduct and morals,” and counts him among the blessed souls who illumined humanity.

Tao and Shinto: Nature as the Sign of God

Taoism cultivated harmony with the Way of nature and effortless action; Shinto, reverence for the sacred in mountains, forests and rivers. Bahá’u’lláh calls nature the embodiment of the Creator’s Name and the expression of God’s Will, while pointing beyond nature itself to its Creator.

One Tabernacle

East Asians often accept the saying that “all religions are ultimately one.” Bahá’u’lláh deepens this intuition: the Manifestations of God abide in one tabernacle and proclaim the same Faith, while revelation unfolds progressively according to the needs of each age.

The foundation of all the divine religions is one. All are based upon reality. Reality does not admit plurality, yet amongst mankind there have arisen differences concerning the Manifestations of God. Some have been Zoroastrians, some are Buddhists, some Jews, Christians, Muslims and so on. This has become a source of divergence, whereas the teachings of the holy Souls Who founded the divine religions are one in essence and reality.

The number nine which in itself is the number of perfection is considered by the Bahá’ís as sacred because it is symbolic of the perfection of the Bahá’í Revelation which constitutes the ninth in the line of existing religions, the latest and fullest Revelation which mankind has ever known. The eighth is the religion of the Báb, and the remaining seven are: Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the religion of the Sabeans. These religions are not the only true religions that have appeared in the world, but are the only ones still existing. There have always been divine Prophets and Messengers, to many of whom the Qur’an refers. But the only ones existing are those mentioned above.

Beyond the Imitation of Ancestors

The East Asian tradition of honoring ancestors is a precious virtue. Yet ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá points out that blind imitation of ancestral forms of belief has divided religions. Bahá’u’lláh asks each person to see with their own eyes, not through the eyes of others, and to investigate truth independently.

The basic principle of the Cause is independent investigation of truth. This applies to us as much as to our children. They should be free to choose for themselves any religion they wish. To promise that they will belong to a certain Faith and not to another is therefore not only contrary to our precepts, but is also a futile promise to give. How can we make the future generation think as we do or follow our dictates. God has made them free. All that we can do is to open their eyes and tell them of what we think to be the truth.

The Shared Task of the Confucian World

Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam share the Confucian inheritance of strong family bonds, zeal for education, order and respect. They also share heavy burdens: the subordination of women, rigid hierarchy and kin-centered loyalty. The Universal House of Justice observes that family forms and gender roles suited to one age can become obstacles in the next; Bahá’u’lláh’s principle of the equality of women and men lights the way.

Historically, the family has taken different forms in response to the exigencies of the various stages of human social development. As society advanced, arrangements and definitions that may have been beneficial in a previous age reached their limits and were no longer suited to the next stage of human development. Expectations of parents suited to one period of history could hinder the development of their children’s abilities in another. Likewise, certain strong allegiances within kinship groups that allowed them to flourish at one stage could in a later one become obstacles to unity within wider social arrangements. And certain gender roles that characterized an early stage of human development could eventually impede the advancement of women and of society at another.

The emancipation of women, the achievement of full equality between the sexes, is one of the most important, though less acknowledged prerequisites of peace. The denial of such equality perpetrates an injustice against one half of the world’s population and promotes in men harmful attitudes and habits that are carried from the family to the workplace, to political life, and ultimately to international relations. There are no grounds, moral, practical, or biological, upon which such denial can be justified. Only as women are welcomed into full partnership in all fields of human endeavor will the moral and psychological climate be created in which international peace can emerge.

With regard to your question whether mothers should work outside the home, it is helpful to consider the matter from the perspective of the concept of a Bahá’í family. This concept is based on the principle that the man has primary responsibility for the financial support of the family, and the woman is the chief and primary educator of the children. This by no means implies that these functions are inflexibly fixed and cannot be changed and adjusted to suit particular family situations, nor does it mean that the place of the woman is confined to the home. Rather, while primary responsibility is assigned, it is anticipated that fathers would play a significant role in the education of the children and women could also be breadwinners.

Filial piety is the root of Confucian ethics, and Bahá’u’lláh places regard for the rights of parents second only to recognizing the unity of God. Yet the Universal House of Justice notes that adult children, while honoring their parents throughout life, must take charge of their own lives and choices: a path from filial piety as obedience to filial piety as love and mutual respect.

A child that is cleanly, agreeable, of good character, well-behaved—even though he be ignorant—is preferable to a child that is rude, unwashed, ill-natured, and yet becoming deeply versed in all the sciences and arts. The reason for this is that the child who conducts himself well, even though he be ignorant, is of benefit to others, while an ill-natured, ill-behaved child is corrupted and harmful to others, even though he be learned. Whoso cleaveth to justice, can, under no circumstances, transgress the limits of moderation. He discerneth the truth in all things, through the guidance of Him Who is the All-Seeing. The civilization, so often vaunted by the learned exponents of arts and sciences, will, if allowed to overleap the bounds of moderation, bring great evil upon men. Thus warneth you He Who is the All-Knowing. If carried to excess, civilization will prove as prolific a source of evil as it had been of goodness when kept within the restraints of moderation.

The forces of materialism promote a quite contrary line of thinking: that happiness comes from constant acquisition, that the more one has the better, that worry for the environment is for another day. These seductive messages fuel an increasingly entrenched sense of personal entitlement, which uses the language of justice and rights to disguise self-interest. Indifference to the hardship experienced by others becomes commonplace while entertainment and distracting amusements are voraciously consumed.

From the Closed Room to the Open World

The phenomenon of social withdrawal, born in Japan as hikikomori and spreading to Korea and China, keeps many young people shut in their rooms. Bahá’u’lláh says that living in seclusion is not acceptable before God and bids us observe what causes “joy and radiance.” This is an invitation, not a rebuke: God’s love dwells even in the one behind the closed door, and the community is called to welcome them tenderly.

Korea’s “N-po generation” that has given up dating, marriage, children and home ownership, Japan’s “satori generation” that has set desire aside, and China’s tang ping, “lying flat,” all voice the same exhaustion. The Universal House of Justice grieves at the younger generation’s lack of hope while naming the social forces that dissuade youth from believing in their God-given capacity. 22.

The Low Birth Rate of East Asia

Korea’s fertility rate is among the lowest in the world, and Japan, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong follow the same path. Bahá’u’lláh calls marriage “the key to the perpetuation of life for the peoples of the world” and bids people marry and bring forth those who will make mention of God. The Universal House of Justice names the forces that sunder the family and presents a marriage integrating love, equality, childbearing and childrearing as the foundation of a new family life.

There is nothing in the Sacred Writings specifically on the subjects of birth control, abortion or sterilization, but Bahá’u’lláh did state that the primary purpose of marriage was the procreation of children, and it is to this primary purpose that the beloved Guardian alludes in many of the letters which are quoted in the compilation. This does not imply that a couple are obliged to have as many children as they can; the Guardian’s secretary clearly stated on his behalf, in answer to an enquiry, that it was for the husband and wife to decide how many children they would have. A decision to have no children at all would vitiate the primary purpose of marriage unless, of course, there were some medical reason why such a decision would be required.

Truth Above Face

The culture of “face” (chemyeon, mianzi) has fostered a delicate consideration for others, yet it can also make people hide the truth and cover over wrongs for fear of others’ eyes. Bahá’u’lláh asks us to look to our own faults rather than those of others; true honor lies not in appearances but in becoming a source of social good.

Should other peoples and nations be unfaithful to you, show your fidelity unto them; should they be unjust toward you, show justice towards them; should they keep aloof from you, attract them to yourselves; should they show their enmity, be friendly towards them; should they poison your lives, sweeten their souls; should they inflict a wound upon you, be a salve to their sores. For centuries and cycles humanity has been engaged in war and conflict. At one time the pretext for war has been religion, at another time patriotism, racial prejudice, national politics, territorial conquest or commercial expansion; in brief, humanity has never been at peace during the period of known history. 25.

Beyond Nationalism

East Asian modernity began with nationalism, which still inflames diplomacy, textbooks and sports arenas. The Bahá’í Writings do not reject love of country and honor “a sane and intelligent patriotism,” but they call for a wider loyalty: love of humanity as a whole.

Unbridled nationalism, as distinguished from a sane and legitimate patriotism, must give way to a wider loyalty, to the love of humanity as a whole. Bahá’u’lláh’s statement is: “The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.” The concept of world citizenship is a direct result of the contraction of the world into a single neighborhood through scientific advances and of the indisputable interdependence of nations. Love of all the world’s peoples does not exclude love of one’s country. The advantage of the part in a world society is best served by promoting the advantage of the whole. Current international activities in various fields which nurture mutual affection and a sense of solidarity among peoples need greatly to be increased.

In East Asia some states tightly manage religion, while elsewhere religion entangled with politics fuels conflict. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá said that, as politics needs free thought, religion needs the right of unrestricted individual belief. The Bahá’ís of Iran: A Mirror

In Iran, the cradle of the Faith, Bahá’ís have endured executions, imprisonment, confiscation and exclusion from universities for more than 170 years. They have answered not with rancour or violence but with “constructive resilience,” even founding their own institute of higher education. Their example is a mirror for every Asian community facing trials.

This Cause, as every divine Cause, cannot be effectively established unless it encounters and valiantly triumphs over the forces of opposition with which it is assailed. But these they should consider as blessings in disguise, as through them their faith will be quickened, purified and strengthened. Bahá’u’lláh compares such afflictive trials to the oil which feeds the lamp of the Cause of God. … The friends should, therefore, not assume an attitude of mere resignation in the face of persecutions; they should rather welcome them, and utilize them as means for their own spiritual uplift and also for the promotion of the Cause.

When the twenty-first century is called “the Asian century,” the phrase usually refers to economic and national power. The Universal House of Justice recalls that Asia nourished mighty civilizations and saw the suns of major Revelations rise, and foresees that the spiritualization of Asia’s nations will extend its influence to the entire planet.

The population of Asia and Australasia is well over half the world population. The area includes Asiatic U.S.S.R. and mainland China, accounting for more than one thousand million souls who are, for the most part, untouched by the Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh. Obviously present conditions in these areas call for the exercise of the utmost wisdom and circumspection. Yet this vast segment of humanity cannot be ignored.

Asian Youth in the World

In 1912 ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá urged young Japanese men in California to become “brilliant lamps” radiating the light of love to all mankind. Today Asian youth studying and working around the world are bridges between cultures, and can be those who seek the point of unity amid the pressures of partisanship.

And ye who are the people of the Orient—the Orient which has ever been the dawning point of lights from whence the Sun of Reality has ever shone forth, casting its effulgence upon the West—ye, therefore, must become the manifestations of lights. Ye must become brilliant lamps. Ye must shine as stars radiating the light of love toward all mankind. May you be the cause of love amongst the nations. Thus may the world become witness that the Orient has ever been the dawning point of illumination, the source of love and reconciliation. Make peace with all the world. Love everybody; serve everybody.

The House of Justice is well aware that Bahá’í youth in many parts of the world find themselves facing considerable pressure from those around them to voice their support for one partisan stance or another. Ardent supporters of particular points of view sometimes use the threat of social ostracism as a way to compel others to adopt their political position. For Bahá’í youth to not only remain clear in their principles in such circumstances, but also continue to show forth courtesy, kindliness, love, and forbearance towards their peers, requires courage and faith, strength of spirit and reliance on God.

Learning One Another’s Language

East Asian students pour years into English, yet few learn a neighbor’s language. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá saw language as an instrument of service: let one who knows Japanese go to Japan, and one who knows Chinese go to China. Bahá’u’lláh called for one auxiliary language to be taught in every school.

Education Raises a Nation

In 1875 ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá wrote that China, the most populous nation on earth, had been weakened by lack of education, while Japan rose through education and the arts of civilization. East Asia’s emergence as an educational powerhouse bears this out. The task now is to extend education to all, above all to women and girls, and to make it serve humanity.

Observe to what a degree the lack of education will weaken and degrade a people. Today \[1875\] from the standpoint of population the greatest nation in the world is China, which has something over four hundred million inhabitants. On this account, its government should be the most distinguished on earth, its people the most acclaimed. And yet on the contrary, because of its lack of education in cultural and material civilization, it is the feeblest and the most helpless of all weak nations.

The cause of universal education, which has already enlisted in its service an army of dedicated people from every faith and nation, deserves the utmost support that the governments of the world can lend it. For ignorance is indisputably the principal reason for the decline and fall of peoples and the perpetuation of prejudice. No nation can achieve success unless education is accorded all its citizens. Lack of resources limits the ability of many nations to fulfill this necessity, imposing a certain ordering of priorities. The decision-making agencies involved would do well to consider giving first priority to the education of women and girls, since it is through educated mothers that the benefits of knowledge can be most effectively and rapidly diffused throughout society.
