Toward the Future
The Mind No Machine Can Hold
In an age when machines write and paint, people ask what belongs to the human alone. The Writings answer that what distinguishes us is the rational soul, a power of discovery that reaches the reality of things, and that this soul is a mirror of all the names and attributes of God, created with the capacity to know and to love Him.

The human spirit, which distinguishes man from the animal, is the rational soul, and these two terms—the human spirit and the rational soul—designate one and the same thing. This spirit, which in the terminology of the philosophers is called the rational soul, encompasses all things and as far as human capacity permits, discovers their realities and becomes aware of the properties and effects, the characteristics and conditions of earthly things. But the human spirit, unless it be assisted by the spirit of faith, cannot become acquainted with the divine mysteries and the heavenly realities. It is like a mirror which, although clear, bright, and polished, is still in need of light. Not until a sunbeam falls upon it can it discover the divine mysteries.

It is therefore clearly established that man is endowed with a power of discovery that distinguishes him from the animal, and this power is none but the human spirit.

Upon the inmost reality of each and every created thing He hath shed the light of one of His names, and made it a recipient of the glory of one of His attributes. Upon the reality of man, however, He hath focused the radiance of all of His names and attributes, and made it a mirror of His own Self. Alone of all created things man hath been singled out for so great a favor, so enduring a bounty.

Thou hast asked Me concerning the nature of the soul. Know, verily, that the soul is a sign of God, a heavenly gem whose reality the most learned of men hath failed to grasp, and whose mystery no mind, however acute, can ever hope to unravel.

The animal is the captive of nature and cannot transgress the rules and laws thereof. In man, however, there is a discovering power that transcendeth the world of nature and controlleth and interfereth with the laws thereof. For instance, all minerals, plants and animals are captives of nature. The sun itself with all its majesty is so subservient to nature that it hath no will of its own and cannot deviate a hair’s-breadth from the laws thereof. In like manner all other beings, whether of the mineral, the vegetable or the animal world, cannot deviate from the laws of nature, nay, all are the slaves thereof. Man, however, though in body the captive of nature is yet free in his mind and soul, and hath the mastery over nature. 2.
Work as Worship
As automation reshapes employment, we must ask again what work is for. Bahá’u’lláh enjoins everyone to take up a useful occupation and exalts work done in the spirit of service to the rank of worship. Work is more than a livelihood; it is how the soul bears fruit and serves others, so whatever machines take over, there will always be work worthy of human beings.

In the Bahá’í Cause arts, sciences and all crafts are (counted as) worship. The man who makes a piece of notepaper to the best of his ability, conscientiously, concentrating all his forces on perfecting it, is giving praise to God. Briefly, all effort and exertion put forth by man from the fullness of his heart is worship, if it is prompted by the highest motives and the will to do service to humanity. This is worship: to serve mankind and to minister to the needs of the people. Service is prayer.

Whatever the progress of the machinery may be, man will have always to toil in order to earn his living. Effort is an inseparable part of man’s life. It may take different forms with the changing conditions of the world, but it will be always present as a necessary element in our earthly existence. Life is after all a struggle. Progress is attained through struggle, and without such a struggle life ceases to have a meaning; it becomes even extinct. The progress of machinery has not made effort unnecessary. It has given it a new form, a new outlet.

It is the duty of those who are in charge of the organization of society to give every individual the opportunity of acquiring the necessary talent in some kind of profession, and also the means of utilizing such a talent, both for its own sake and for the sake of earning the means of his livelihood. Every individual, no matter how handicapped and limited he may be, is under the obligation of engaging in some work or profession, for work, specially when performed in the spirit of service, is according to Bahá’u’lláh a form of worship. It has not only a utilitarian purpose, but has a value in itself, because it draws us nearer to God, and enables us to better grasp His purpose for us in this world. 3.
Lamp and Lamp-Glass
Korea has embraced new technology faster than almost any nation. The Writings honor science and invention, yet liken material civilization to a lamp-glass and divine civilization to the light within it. Technology finds its meaning in what profits humanity; carried beyond moderation, the same civilization that brought good can become a source of evil.

Had material civilization been combined with Divine civilization, these fiery weapons would never have been invented. Nay, rather, human energy would have been wholly devoted to useful inventions and would have been concentrated on praiseworthy discoveries. Material civilization is like a lamp-glass. Divine civilization is like the spirit, and the body gets its life from the spirit, otherwise it becomes a corpse.

Korea has one of the highest rates of smartphone use in the world, and many feel the fatigue of never looking up from a screen. A daily hour of self-reckoning is a spiritual discipline for reclaiming our attention.

People today indeed do tend to be very superficial in their thinking, and it would seem as if the educational systems in use are sorely lacking in ability to produce a mature mind in a person who has reached supposedly adult life! All the outside influences that surround the individual seem to have an intensely distracting effect, and it is a hard job to get the average person to do any deep thinking or even a little meditation on the problems facing him and the world at large. 7.

Already in the nineteenth century Bahá’u’lláh spoke of forces 'capable of changing the whole atmosphere of the earth.'

At the same time, hopeful constructive trends can also be discerned, which are contributing to that “universal fermentation” which Shoghi Effendi said is “purging and reshaping humanity in anticipation of the Day when the wholeness of the human race will have been recognized and its unity established”. East Asian traditions have long cherished the harmony of heaven, earth and humanity. This is at once contrary to justice, to humanity, and to fairness; it is the very height of inequity and runs counter to the good-pleasure of the All-Merciful.

One Tongue Beside Our Own
A society that loves its own language yet spends heavily on English education knows how great a barrier language can be. Bahá’u’lláh foretold the day when every nation will teach, alongside the mother tongue, one universal auxiliary language and a common script, and named this one of the signs of humanity’s coming of age. An auxiliary language does not replace our own tongue; it is a bridge joining every language to every other.

Korea, China and Japan share a script, a Confucian and Buddhist heritage, and yet a painful history keeps them apart. In the Tablets of the Divine Plan ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá names Korea itself, together with Japan, as lands where 'most great results will be forthcoming,' and hopes that men and women will travel together through China and Japan to strengthen the bond of love. Climate, pandemics, nuclear weapons and artificial intelligence: ever more problems lie beyond the power of any single nation. In the nineteenth century Bahá’u’lláh already called for a vast assemblage of the world’s rulers to lay the foundations of the Great Peace, and Shoghi Effendi described a world commonwealth with a world legislature, executive and tribunal. This does not abolish national autonomy; it enfolds it in a wider loyalty.

This commonwealth must, as far as we can visualize it, consist of a world legislature, whose members will, as the trustees of the whole of mankind, ultimately control the entire resources of all the component nations, and will enact such laws as shall be required to regulate the life, satisfy the needs and adjust the relationships of all races and peoples.

More than half of Koreans now say they have no religion. Many have left because of the division and hypocrisy committed in religion’s name, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá Himself said that if religion becomes a cause of hatred and division, it were better to be without it. The third teaching of Bahá’u’lláh is that religion must be the source of fellowship, the cause of unity and the nearness of God to man. If it rouses hatred and strife, it is evident that absence of religion is preferable and an irreligious man better than one who professes it. According to the divine Will and intention religion should be the cause of love and agreement, a bond to unify all mankind, for it is a message of peace and goodwill to man from God.

But as experience clearly shows, the remedy to this truly sad and perplexing situation is not to be found in traditional and ecclesiastical religion. … What can control youth and save it from the pitfalls of the crass materialism of the age is the power of a genuine, constructive and living Faith such as the one revealed to the world by Bahá’u’lláh. Religion, as in the past, is still the world’s sole hope, but not that form of religion which our ecclesiastical leaders strive vainly to preach. Divorced from true religion, morals lose their effectiveness and cease to guide and control man’s individual and social life.

The Spiritual Springtime

The spiritual thirst of our age is itself a sign that a new spring has already begun.

When, however, the winter season has run its course, the spiritual springtime returns again and a new cycle reveals its splendour. The breezes of the spirit blow, the radiant morn breaks, the clouds of the Merciful rain down, the rays of the Sun of Truth shine forth, and the world of being is invested with a new life and arrayed in a wondrous robe. All the signs and bestowals of the former springtime, and perhaps even greater ones, reappear in this new season.

These fashions are not permanent; they are bound to change. Today the fad is a materialistic view of life and of the world. A day will soon come when it will become deeply religious and spiritual. When the pendulum will start its full swing then we shall see all such eminent men turn again to God.

Two Wings of One Bird
In Korean society science and religion are often thought to be at odds. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likens them to the two wings on which human intelligence soars: with religion alone we fall into the quagmire of superstition, with science alone into the slough of materialism. Religion and science are the two wings upon which man’s intelligence can soar into the heights, with which the human soul can progress. It is not possible to fly with one wing alone!
Amid the pressure of exams and job competition, young Koreans easily face the future with fear. The Universal House of Justice calls youth a period 'bright… but brief,' and says that the longing for constructive change and the capacity for meaningful service belong to no single race or nation and depend on no material means. Death Pangs and Birth Pangs
Watching the news, the world can seem to be falling apart. Shoghi Effendi describes two processes at work at once: the 'death pangs' of an order effete and godless, and the 'birth pangs' of an Order divine and redemptive. We are indeed living in an age which, if we would correctly appraise it, should be regarded as one which is witnessing a dual phenomenon. The first signalizes the death pangs of an order, effete and godless, that has stubbornly refused, despite the signs and portents of a century-old Revelation, to attune its processes to the precepts and ideals which that Heaven-sent Faith proffered it. The second proclaims the birth pangs of an Order, divine and redemptive, that will inevitably supplant the former, and within Whose administrative structure an embryonic civilization, incomparable and world-embracing, is imperceptibly maturing.

The Equilibrium Upset

Preparing for the future begins with facing today’s problems honestly. Bahá’u’lláh says that 'every age hath its own problem,' and bids us be anxiously concerned with the needs of the age we live in. The All-Knowing Physician has His finger on the pulse of mankind and has prescribed the remedy for this age.

The All-Knowing Physician hath His finger on the pulse of mankind. He perceiveth the disease, and prescribeth, in His unerring wisdom, the remedy. Every age hath its own problem, and every soul its particular aspiration. The remedy the world needeth in its present-day afflictions can never be the same as that which a subsequent age may require. Be anxiously concerned with the needs of the age ye live in, and center your deliberations on its exigencies and requirements.

We can well perceive how the whole human race is encompassed with great, with incalculable afflictions. We see it languishing on its bed of sickness, sore-tried and disillusioned. They that are intoxicated by self-conceit have interposed themselves between it and the Divine and infallible Physician. Witness how they have entangled all men, themselves included, in the mesh of their devices.

That which the Lord hath ordained as the sovereign remedy and mightiest instrument for the healing of all the world is the union of all its peoples in one universal Cause, one common Faith. This can in no wise be achieved except through the power of a skilled, an all-powerful and inspired Physician. 29.
More Is Not Better
Korea became prosperous faster than almost any nation, yet the belief that having more brings happiness has bred endless comparison and exhaustion. The Universal House of Justice says that to view a person’s worth by how much one can accumulate and consume is wholly alien to Bahá’í thought; yet the Teachings neither condemn wealth as such nor counsel asceticism. Wealth must serve humanity.

To view the worth of an individual chiefly in terms of how much one can accumulate and how many goods one can consume relative to others is wholly alien to Bahá’í thought. But neither are the teachings in sympathy with sweeping dismissals of wealth as inherently distasteful or immoral, and asceticism is prohibited. Wealth must serve humanity.

The individual is not merely a self-interested economic unit, striving to claim an ever-greater share of the world’s material resources. “Man’s merit lieth in service and virtue”, Bahá’u’lláh avers, “and not in the pageantry of wealth and riches.”

Know ye in truth that wealth is a mighty barrier between the seeker and his desire, the lover and his beloved. The rich, but for a few, shall in no wise attain the court of His presence nor enter the city of content and resignation. Well is it then with him, who, being rich, is not hindered by his riches from the eternal kingdom, nor deprived by them of imperishable dominion.

Indifference to the hardship experienced by others becomes commonplace while entertainment and distracting amusements are voraciously consumed.

By the statement ‘the economic solution is divine in nature’ is meant that religion alone can, in the last resort, bring in man’s nature such a fundamental change as to enable him to adjust the economic relationships of society. It is only in this way that man can control the economic forces that threaten to disrupt the foundations of his existence, and thus assert his mastery over the forces of nature.

Do not grieve, dear brother, for being poor, for you are rich instead in faith and in spirit. This is a divine wealth for which the richest of the world will crave for in vain. True we must work hard, earn money and keep our family in happiness and prosperity, but we must always realize that our lives must be devoted to things higher and more sublime. 30.
The Lamp of Consultation
Even when artificial intelligence offers answers, how to live together is something people must discover together. Bahá’u’lláh calls consultation 'the lamp of guidance' and 'the bestower of understanding,' and says that no welfare can be attained except through it. The Universal House of Justice teaches that an initial difference of opinion is not a cause of rancor but the starting point for deeper understanding.

Consultation bestoweth greater awareness and transmuteth conjecture into certitude. It is a shining light which, in a dark world, leadeth the way and guideth.

An initial difference of opinion is the starting point for examining an issue in order to reach greater understanding and consensus; it should not become a cause of rancor, aversion, or estrangement.

Grounds for Hope
Amid climate anxiety, slow growth and isolation, many young people say there is no future. The Universal House of Justice affirms that however painful the coming years, the convulsive changes ahead signal not the end of civilization but the release of 'the potentialities inherent in the station of man.' Through halting steps, dramatic leaps and even reversals, the world is moving towards Bahá’u’lláh’s vision.

Whatever suffering and turmoil the years immediately ahead may hold, however dark the immediate circumstances, the Bahá’í community believes that humanity can confront this supreme trial with confidence in its ultimate outcome. Far from signalizing the end of civilization, the convulsive changes towards which humanity is being ever more rapidly impelled will serve to release the “potentialities inherent in the station of man” and reveal “the full measure of his destiny on earth, the innate excellence of his reality.”
