Korean Society, Eastern Philosophy, and Schopenhauer and the Suffering of Koreans

The Success and Failure of Materialism

Korea is perhaps the most dazzling success story of materialism, rising from poverty to plenty in a single generation. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá affirms that material civilization is a means of progress, yet says that without divine civilization it is a lamp-glass without light, a body without a spirit. The Universal House of Justice asks where the “new world” promised by the materialist ideologies of East and West has gone.

And among the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh is that although material civilization is one of the means for the progress of the world of mankind, yet until it becomes combined with Divine civilization, the desired result, which is the felicity of mankind, will not be attained. … Material civilization is like a lamp-glass. Divine civilization is the lamp itself and the glass without the light is dark. Material civilization is like the body. No matter how infinitely graceful, elegant and beautiful it may be, it is dead.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 226

For man two wings are necessary. One wing is physical power and material civilization; the other is spiritual power and divine civilization. With one wing only, flight is impossible. Two wings are essential. Therefore, no matter how much material civilization advances, it cannot attain to perfection except through the uplift of spiritual civilization.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 14 April 1912

Pedagogy: Mining the Gems

Korea’s passion for education is second to none, yet the competition of the entrance examinations robs many children of the joy of learning. Bahá’u’lláh bids us regard man as a mine rich in gems, teaching that education does not pour things in from outside but brings to light the treasures within. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that training in character is far more important than book learning, and that blows and verbal abuse pervert a child’s character.

Training in morals and good conduct is far more important than book learning. A child that is cleanly, agreeable, of good character, well-behaved—even though he be ignorant—is preferable to a child that is rude, unwashed, ill-natured, and yet becoming deeply versed in all the sciences and arts.

Beyond Sadaejuui: Seeing with Thine Own Eyes

Sadaejuui, “serving the great,” began as an old diplomatic practice toward larger empires and became a habit of mind that leans on the authority and standards of others. Bahá’u’lláh calls us, by the aid of justice, to see with our own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and reminds the human being, created noble, not to abase himself. The independent investigation of truth is the first principle of the Bahá’í teachings.

The Equality of Languages

Korean long looked down on itself beside Chinese characters and English, and even today English ability often marks social class. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that the function of language is to convey thought, so it matters not what language one speaks; Bahá’u’lláh foresaw a day when each person need learn only two languages, the mother tongue and one universal auxiliary language. The auxiliary language does not replace the mother tongue; it is a common ground where every language meets with dignity.

Rulers and the Ruled

For Koreans, who passed through dynasties, colonial rule and military dictatorship, the relation of rulers and ruled is an old and painful question. Bahá’u’lláh declared to the kings of the earth that their people are their treasures and a trust from God, and rebuked as injustice the laying of heavy burdens upon them. The legitimacy of rule springs not from power but from justice and service.

Obedience: Loyalty to Government

Obedience to authority was a virtue of Confucian society, yet under dictatorship it also became a yoke that enforced silence and conformity. The Bahá’í teachings ask believers in every land to behave toward their government with loyalty, honesty and truthfulness, while making clear that this does not mean identifying the government’s policies with the Faith. Obedience is not servility but a principle that guards unity and order, exemplified by the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh, Who kept Their dignity even before unjust power.

Atomization: A Society of Scattered Selves

With single-person households, lonely deaths, crumbling communities and endless competition, Korean society is becoming ever more like a collection of separated atoms. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that all things come into being through composition and pass away through decomposition, that attraction and composition are the means of life while discord and division produce death. Bahá’u’lláh calls humanity, the fruits of one tree and the leaves of one branch, to deal with one another in the utmost love and harmony.

Every created thing in the contingent world is made up of many and varied atoms, and its existence is dependent on the composition of these. … Therefore attraction and composition between the various elements is the means of life, and discord, decomposition and division produce death. Thus the cohesive and attractive forces in all things lead to the appearance of fruitful results and effects, while estrangement and alienation of things lead to disturbance and annihilation.

Work: Labor Raised to Worship

Koreans are among the longest-working people in the world, yet for many work is a yoke of survival and a cause of burnout. Bahá’u’lláh made engagement in an occupation obligatory for all and exalted work done in the spirit of service to the rank of worship of God. Work becomes not a means of winning a competition but a sacred act that profits oneself and others.

The Equalization of Wealth

Korea was once among the nations whose growth was most evenly shared, yet today, as talk of “spoon classes” reveals, inherited wealth and widening gaps have become a deep wound. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that absolute equality is not in the nature of things and would bring disorder, yet He promises a moderation and readjustment in which extremes of wealth and poverty disappear. Bahá’u’lláh bids us tell the rich of the midnight sighing of the poor.

It is not meant that all will be equal, for inequality in degree and capacity is a property of nature. Necessarily there will be rich people and also those who will be in want of their livelihood, but in the aggregate community there will be equalization and readjustment of values and interests. In the future there will be no very rich nor extremely poor. There will be an equilibrium of interests, and a condition will be established which will make both rich and poor comfortable and content.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 19 May 1912

It is therefore clearly established that the appropriation of excessive wealth by a few individuals, notwithstanding the needs of the masses, is unfair and unjust, and that, conversely, absolute equality would also disrupt the existence, welfare, comfort, peace, and orderly life of the human race. Such being the case, the best course is therefore to seek moderation, which is for the wealthy to recognize the advantages of moderation in the acquisition of profits and to show regard for the welfare of the poor and the needy, that is, to fix a daily wage for the workers and also to allot them a share of the total profits of the factory.

Words and Deeds as One

Eonhaeng ilchi, the oneness of word and deed, was held by the scholars of East Asia as the first mark of the noble person. Bahá’u’lláh warns us not to walk in the ways of those whose words differ from their deeds, and even says that for one whose words exceed his deeds, death is better than life. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá counsels that actions must mean more to us than words, and that our actions should day by day become beautiful prayers.

Say: Beware, O people of Bahá, lest ye walk in the ways of them whose words differ from their deeds. Strive that ye may be enabled to manifest to the peoples of the earth the signs of God, and to mirror forth His commandments. Let your acts be a guide unto all mankind, for the professions of most men, be they high or low, differ from their conduct. It is through your deeds that ye can distinguish yourselves from others.
Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, CXXXIX

The Light of Governance: Consultation and Compassion

Having won its democracy, Korea now faces a new test of bitter partisan conflict and distrust. Bahá’u’lláh says that the heaven of divine wisdom is illumined by the two luminaries of consultation and compassion, and He praised a form of government that joins the majesty of kingship with the consultation of the people. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that a country cannot be properly administered until the people are educated and its officials are free from every remnant of corruption.

Love and Confucius

Confucius revered the mandate of Heaven and taught ren (仁), the love of others, restoring the ancient rites and morals that had fallen into decay. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that Confucius renewed the ancient conduct and morals, and counts him among the blessed souls, with Moses, Jesus and the Buddha, who were the cause of the illumination of the world of humanity. Because the original precepts were forgotten over time, the spirit of that love is renewed in the Revelation of this age.

Ren (仁): Loving-Kindness toward All

Hyo (孝): Honoring One’s Parents

Filial piety is the virtue most deeply engraved on the Korean heart, yet today it wavers under the burdens of care and conflict between generations. Bahá’u’lláh says that greater than all, after recognition of the unity of God, is regard for the rights due to one’s parents, and that loving-kindness to parents has been linked to recognition of the one true God. The law requiring parental consent to marriage likewise aims to plant in children’s hearts gratitude and respect for those who gave them life.

Ye (禮), propriety, was prized by Confucius as the outward form of humaneness, and it lives on deeply in Korea’s honorific speech and etiquette. Bahá’u’lláh calls courtesy the prince of virtues, makes it the true mark of those who are nigh unto God, and bids us clothe our bodies with the vesture of courtesy. This courtesy is not a form of hierarchy but a raiment that fits all, young or old, a nobility of the heart.

Cultivate the Self, Order the Family, Govern the Nation, Bring Peace to the World

The Great Learning’s sequence (cultivate the self, order the family, govern the nation, bring peace to all under heaven) is the great road of East Asian ethics, beginning with self-cultivation and passing through family and nation to the peace of the world. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that a family is a nation in miniature: enlarge the circle of the household and you have the nation; enlarge the circle of nations and you have all humanity. Bahá’u’lláh bids our vision be world-embracing rather than confined to our own self, and so the last stage of that ancient road, peace under heaven, now opens as the oneness of humankind.

Zhongyong (中庸): The Principle of Moderation

The Doctrine of the Mean taught the balance of a heart that neither exceeds nor falls short as the way of the noble person. Bahá’u’lláh says that whatsoever passes beyond the limits of moderation ceases to exert a beneficial influence, and that even liberty and civilization become harmful when carried to excess. He teaches that the power to keep this moderation springs from justice.

Laozi and the Way

Laozi said that the Way that can be spoken is not the eternal Way, teaching humility before a source that cannot be named, and he took as the virtue of the Way a gentleness that, like water, dwells in low places. Bahá’u’lláh likewise teaches that the Essence of God is unknowable, infinitely exalted above every human word and concept, and that humility exalts man to the heaven of glory while pride abases him. Yet the Writings also teach that this unknowable Source reveals itself through the Manifestations of God.

Of the Buddha, founder of the faith that shaped a thousand years of Korean culture, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that He established a new religion and the oneness of God, a precious Being. He is among the Manifestations of God, one in spirit and reality with Abraham, Moses, Zoroaster, Jesus, Muḥammad, the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh, and Shoghi Effendi explains that the Buddha’s prophecy of Maitreya, the Buddha of universal fellowship, refers to Bahá’u’lláh. 23.

Detachment from Desire

The Buddha saw the cause of suffering in craving, the desire that clings, and called the freedom in which that fire goes out nirvana. Bahá’u’lláh likewise bids us deny ourselves what we desire if we seek His pleasure, and defines “the world” as unawareness of God and absorption in aught else. Yet detachment in the Writings is not the renunciation of the world but allowing nothing to intervene between oneself and God, and its end is not extinction but turning one’s face toward the Lord.

Schopenhauer saw life as suffering, swinging between endless desire and lack and, once desire is satisfied, boredom; for Koreans today, living with some of the world’s highest rates of suicide and depression, his diagnosis is not unfamiliar. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá too acknowledges that humanity is bowed down with trouble and the world is wet with tears, yet He says that all sorrow and grief come from the world of matter and that the remedy is at our doors. Without denying the reality of suffering, the Writings answer that suffering is not the last word.

Physical pain is a necessary accompaniment of all human existence, and as such is unavoidable. As long as there will be life on earth, there will be also suffering, in various forms and degrees. This is the interpretation given to it by all the prophets and saints who, in the midst of severe tests and trials, felt happy and joyous and experienced what is best and holiest in life.

Beyond Pessimism

Schopenhauer’s pessimism goes so far as to call this the worst of all possible worlds and to conclude that it would have been better not to be born. Bahá’u’lláh bids us not to sorrow if things contrary to our wishes are ordained on this earthly plane, promising that days of blissful joy and heavenly delight are assuredly in store. The hope of the Writings is not a naivety that looks away from suffering, but a deep conviction that there is no cause for sorrow save distance from God.

Will: Blind Striving and Free Choice

For Schopenhauer the essence of the world was a blind Will, craving endlessly and without purpose, and the human being was but its puppet. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that some things, like sleep, death, sickness and misfortune, lie beyond our control, but that the choice of good and evil actions is left to our free will. Bahá’u’lláh asks us not to prefer our will to His, so that the will is not a curse to be extinguished but a capacity to be turned toward God.

Certain matters are subject to the free will of man, such as acting with justice and fairness, or injustice and iniquity—in other words, the choice of good or evil actions. It is clear and evident that the will of man figures greatly in these actions. But there are certain matters where man is forced and compelled, such as sleep, death, sickness, failing powers, misfortune, and material loss: These are not subject to the will of man and he is not accountable for them, for he is compelled to endure them. But he is free in the choice of good and evil actions, and it is of his own accord that he performs them.

Desire: Seeking That Which Perisheth

Schopenhauer held that desire unfulfilled is pain, and fulfilled soon turns to boredom. Bahá’u’lláh laments that God calls us to the eternal, yet we seek that which perishes, and says that the soul that fails in its allegiance to its Creator becomes a victim to self and passion and sinks in their depths. The problem of desire lies not in desire itself but in its direction, for longing toward the eternal becomes the very life of the soul.

The Meaning of Life

Before the question “Why live?” Schopenhauer answered that there is no way but to deny the will and extinguish desire. Bahá’u’lláh says that the purpose of God in creating man has been to enable him to know his Creator and attain His Presence, and that all men have been created to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá defines life everlasting as turning to God.

Tests as the Means of Growth

Korea’s young people are worn out by lives in which they are judged and ranked by examinations. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá speaks of tests in an entirely different sense: as a well-prepared student rejoices on the day of examination, so to the loyal soul a test is God’s grace; as gold gleams in the assayer’s fire, so trials cleanse the spotting of self from the mirror of the heart. Suffering frees a person from the petty affairs of this worldly life until he arrives at complete detachment.

The Cup of Sorrow

Bahá’u’lláh, through nearly forty years of exile and imprisonment, drained to its dregs the cup of sorrow, that all the peoples of the earth might attain unto abiding joy. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá too confessed that His cup of woe ran over. For Koreans, who have long carried han, the sufferings of those Who passed through the deepest sorrow Themselves tell us that our pain is not borne alone.

33. 인내

Patience

In a culture of ppalli-ppalli, “hurry, hurry,” Koreans find waiting hard to bear, yet there is no shortcut to the growth of the soul. Bahá’u’lláh says that the sign of love is patience under His trials, and that the steed which crosses the Valley of Search is patience. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá counsels us, when calamity strikes, to be patient and composed, with perfect confidence in the abounding grace of God.

34. 희망

Hope

In an age when the phrase “Hell Joseon” spreads and many young people say they have given up dating, marriage and children, hope has become the most precious thing. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that the Teachings of God bring hope to the hopeless, and that love brings hope to the hopeless and gladdens the sorrowful. As every night is followed by a day, hope is not a vague expectation but stands on the promise of God and on our deeds of love.

The Remedy for Despair

Despair is the deepest shadow over Korean society, and many quietly break down alone, telling no one. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls out, “Do not despair! … Take courage!”, and says that dwelling on our own weakness brings only despair, so we must lift our eyes to the everlasting, bountiful mercy of the Almighty. If we are hemmed in by difficulties we have only to call upon God, and when sorrow and adversity visit us, heavenly consolation is outpoured.

When Life Is Suffering: Schopenhauer and the Writings

Schopenhauer and the Bahá’í Writings are strikingly alike in seeing this world as full of suffering and illusion. But where Schopenhauer sought release from suffering by extinguishing the will, the Writings teach that through suffering one attains an eternal happiness, and that one who has reached the state of self-sacrifice has true joy. Suffering is not proof that life is meaningless; it is the heat of the fire by which the soul matures.

Suffering, of one kind or another, seems to be the portion of man in this world. No doubt in the future, when the foundation of society is laid according to the Divine plan, and men become truly spiritualized, a vast amount of our present ills and problems will be remedied. 37.

The Existence and Power of the Human Spirit

For Schopenhauer the human being was blind will clothed in a body, but ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that the spirit of man is something very different from his physical body, changeless and indestructible. Cold, heat and suffering concern only the body and do not touch the spirit, so that a poor and sick man may be spiritually strong and free. As the sun still shines when the glass is broken, even death has no power over the spirit.

However, we must always remember these illnesses have nothing to do with our spirit or our inner relation to God. … You must always remember, no matter how much you or others may be afflicted with mental troubles and the crushing environment of these State Institutions, that your spirit is healthy, near to our Beloved, and will in the next world enjoy a happy and normal state of soul.

The Spiritual and Material Aspects of Humanity

Much suffering springs from seeing the human being only as a desiring animal. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that in man there are two natures, a spiritual or higher nature and a material or lower nature; by the one he approaches God, by the other he lives for the world alone. Which nature rules depends on our choice, for the human being has the power both to do good and to do evil.

Man has the power both to do good and to do evil; if his power for good predominates and his inclinations to do wrong are conquered, then man in truth may be called a saint. But if, on the contrary, he rejects the things of God and allows his evil passions to conquer him, then he is no better than a mere animal.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 18

Self has really two meanings, or is used in two senses, in the Bahá’í writings: one is self, the identity of the individual created by God. This is the self mentioned in such passages as ‘he hath known God who hath known himself etc.’. The other self is the ego, the dark, animalistic heritage each one of us has, the lower nature that can develop into a monster of selfishness, brutality, lust and so on. It is this self we must struggle against, or this side of our natures, in order to strengthen and free the spirit within us and help it to attain perfection.

Joy within the Prison

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá spent forty years in prison and exile, yet He testified that through all those years He was supremely happy. The secret of a joy in which every morning was like hearing good tidings lay in spirituality and in turning to God. Even in a life where suffering cannot be avoided, joy comes not from circumstances but from where the heart is turned.
