The Way of Life

Man, the Supreme Talisman

Bahá’u’lláh likens the human being to a mine of priceless gems. Education does not pour something in from outside; it brings to light what is already there. For a society as devoted to schooling as Korea, these words recall that the aim of education is not rivalry but the revealing of the treasure in every person.

Man is the supreme Talisman. Lack of a proper education hath, however, deprived him of that which he doth inherently possess. Through a word proceeding out of the mouth of God he was called into being; by one word more he was guided to recognize the Source of his education; by yet another word his station and destiny were safeguarded. The Great Being saith: Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.
Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, CXXII

Unto every father hath been enjoined the instruction of his son and daughter in the art of reading and writing and in all that hath been laid down in the Holy Tablet. He that putteth away that which is commanded unto him, the Trustees are then to take from him that which is required for their instruction if he be wealthy and, if not, the matter devolveth upon the House of Justice. Verily have We made it a shelter for the poor and needy.
Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitáb‑i‑Aqdas, ¶48

Every child is potentially the light of the world—and at the same time its darkness; wherefore must the question of education be accounted as of primary importance.

Self has really two meanings, or is used in two senses, in the Bahá’í writings: one is self, the identity of the individual created by God. This is the self mentioned in such passages as ‘he hath known God who hath known himself etc.’. The other self is the ego, the dark, animalistic heritage each one of us has, the lower nature that can develop into a monster of selfishness, brutality, lust and so on. It is this self we must struggle against, or this side of our natures, in order to strengthen and free the spirit within us and help it to attain perfection.

Knowledge Is as Wings

Bahá’u’lláh calls knowledge the wings of human life and a ladder for its ascent, yet He asks for sciences that profit the peoples of the earth, not those that begin and end in words. The teaching resonates with the Korean Silhak scholars and their call to ‘seek truth from facts.’

Scientific knowledge is the highest attainment upon the human plane, for science is the discoverer of realities. It is of two kinds: material and spiritual. Material science is the investigation of natural phenomena; divine science is the discovery and realization of spiritual verities. The world of humanity must acquire both. A bird has two wings; it cannot fly with one. Material and spiritual science are the two wings of human uplift and attainment. Both are necessary—one the natural, the other supernatural; one material, the other divine.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 23 May 1912

The Teachings of Bahá’u’lláh throw light on so many aspects of human life and knowledge that a Bahá’í must learn, earlier than most, to weigh the information that is given to him rather than to accept it blindly. A Bahá’í has the advantage of the divine Revelation for this Age, which shines like a searchlight on so many problems that baffle modern thinkers; he must therefore develop the ability to learn everything from those around him, showing proper humility before his teachers, but always relating what he hears to the Bahá’í teachings, for they will enable him to sort out the gold from the dross of human error.

Character Before Book Learning

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says a well-mannered child is better than a learned but ill-natured one, and calls the union of both ‘light upon light.’ In classrooms easily consumed by grades and entrance exams, His counsel to rear children as a gardener tends young plants, and never to strike or vilify them, rings deeply.

Training in morals and good conduct is far more important than book learning. A child that is cleanly, agreeable, of good character, well-behaved—even though he be ignorant—is preferable to a child that is rude, unwashed, ill-natured, and yet becoming deeply versed in all the sciences and arts. The reason for this is that the child who conducts himself well, even though he be ignorant, is of benefit to others, while an ill-natured, ill-behaved child is corrupted and harmful to others, even though he be learned. If, however, the child be trained to be both learned and good, the result is light upon light.

Educate the Daughters First

The teaching that daughters should have priority when a family cannot educate all its children overturns the old custom of schooling sons first. Through educated mothers, knowledge spreads most quickly and widely through society. To build schools for girls is to build the next generation.

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, in His Tablets, not only calls attention to the responsibility of parents to educate all their children, but He also clearly specifies that the “training and culture of daughters is more necessary than that of sons,” for girls will one day be mothers, and mothers are the first educators of the new generation. If it is not possible, therefore, for a family to educate all the children, preference is to be accorded to daughters since, through educated mothers, the benefits of knowledge can be most effectively and rapidly diffused throughout society.

Marriage, a Fortress for Well-Being

Bahá’u’lláh established marriage as ‘a fortress for well-being and salvation.’ It is more than a contract between families or a social duty: it is a path on which two people come to know each other’s character and are joined in mind and heart as companions for time and eternity.

And when He desired to manifest grace and beneficence to men, and to set the world in order, He revealed observances and created laws; among them He established the law of marriage, made it as a fortress for well-being and salvation, and enjoined it upon us in that which was sent down out of the heaven of sanctity in His Most Holy Book. He saith, great is His glory: “Enter into wedlock, O people, that ye may bring forth one who will make mention of Me amid My servants. Bahá’í marriage is the commitment of the two parties one to the other, and their mutual attachment of mind and heart. Each must, however, exercise the utmost care to become thoroughly acquainted with the character of the other, that the binding covenant between them may be a tie that will endure forever. Their purpose must be this: to become loving companions and comrades and at one with each other for time and eternity.

The institution of marriage, as established by Bahá’u’lláh, while giving due importance to the physical aspect of marital union considers it as subordinate to the moral and spiritual purposes and functions with which it has been invested by an all-wise and loving Providence. Only when these different values are given each their due importance, and only on the basis of the subordination of the physical to the moral, and the carnal to the spiritual can such excesses and laxity in marital relations as our decadent age is so sadly witnessing be avoided, and family life be restored to its original purity, and fulfill the true function for which it has been instituted by God.

A Family Is a Nation in Miniature

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that the family enlarged becomes the nation, and the nation enlarged becomes humanity, words that recall the Great Learning’s sequence of cultivating the self, ordering the family, governing the state and bringing peace to the world. In the Bahá’í teachings, however, family harmony comes not from hierarchy but from honoring the rights of father, mother and child alike.

According to the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh the family, being a human unit, must be educated according to the rules of sanctity. All the virtues must be taught the family. The integrity of the family bond must be constantly considered, and the rights of the individual members must not be transgressed. The rights of the son, the father, the mother—none of them must be transgressed, none of them must be arbitrary. Just as the son has certain obligations to his father, the father, likewise, has certain obligations to his son. The mother, the sister and other members of the household have their certain prerogatives. All these rights and prerogatives must be conserved, yet the unity of the family must be sustained. The injury of one shall be considered the injury of all; the comfort of each, the comfort of all; the honor of one, the honor of all.

The Two Wings of a Bird

The bird of humanity flies on two wings, women and men; if one is weak, however strong the other, flight is impossible. In East Asia, where the custom of ‘revering men and lowering women’ ran long and deep, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá states plainly that women’s lag was due not to nature but to lack of educational opportunity.

And among the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh is the equality of women and men. The world of humanity has two wings—one is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly. Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible. Not until the world of women becomes equal to the world of men in the acquisition of virtues and perfections, can success and prosperity be attained as they ought to be.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 227 (Tablet to The Hague)

Ninth, there must be an equality of rights between men and women. Women shall receive an equal privilege of education. Therefore, the completeness and perfection of the human world are dependent upon the equal development of these two wings.

Women and the Coming of Peace

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá foretells that war will cease when women participate fully and equally in the arena of law and politics. The Universal House of Justice calls the equality of the sexes a prerequisite of peace that is ‘less acknowledged.’ Equality is not a concern of women alone; the peace of all humanity depends on it.

So it will come to pass that when women participate fully and equally in the affairs of the world, when they enter confidently and capably the great arena of laws and politics, war will cease; for woman will be the obstacle and hindrance to it. This is true and without doubt.

Woman by nature is opposed to war; she is an advocate of peace. Children are reared and brought up by the mothers who give them the first principles of education and labor assiduously in their behalf. Consider, for instance, a mother who has tenderly reared a son for twenty years to the age of maturity. Surely she will not consent to having that son torn asunder and killed in the field of battle. Therefore, as woman advances toward the degree of man in power and privilege, with the right of vote and control in human government, most assuredly war will cease; for woman is naturally the most devoted and staunch advocate of international peace.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 25 October 1912

The emancipation of women, the achievement of full equality between the sexes, is one of the most important, though less acknowledged prerequisites of peace. The denial of such equality perpetrates an injustice against one half of the world’s population and promotes in men harmful attitudes and habits that are carried from the family to the workplace, to political life, and ultimately to international relations. There are no grounds, moral, practical, or biological, upon which such denial can be justified. Only as women are welcomed into full partnership in all fields of human endeavor will the moral and psychological climate be created in which international peace can emerge.

What ‘Abdu’l-Bahá meant about the women arising for peace is that this is a matter which vitally affects women, and when they form a conscious and overwhelming mass of public opinion against war, there can be no war. But they should, through teaching and through the active moral support they give to every movement directed towards peace, seek to exert a strong influence on other women’s minds in regard to this essential matter.

The Bright Season of Youth

Youth is bright but brief, and buffeted by social forces. The Universal House of Justice urges young people neither to dwell on the faults of others nor to be immobilized by their own shortcomings, but to rise for the light of justice. To Korean young people pressed by exams and job markets, this season is presented not as a tunnel to endure but as a time to ‘pluck the fruit of life.’

The young too must learn to act with wisdom, tact and moderation, and to take advantage and benefit from the age-long experience of their older fellow-believers. The old and the young have each something specific to contribute to the progress and welfare of the Bahá’í community. The energy of youth should be tempered and guided by the wisdom of old age.

Justice, the Best Beloved of All Things

The second of the Hidden Words names justice the best beloved of all things in God’s sight, and by it we are to see with our own eyes and not through the eyes of others. For Bahá’u’lláh justice is not a cold legal code but the light that brings unity among people.

Choose for Thy Neighbour What Thou Choosest for Thyself

Confucius taught, ‘Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire.’ Bahá’u’lláh re-establishes the same Golden Rule at the heart of justice and calls it ‘My best counsel unto you.’ A truth taught by sages of East and West alike sounds again for a new age.

A Chaste and Holy Life

Shoghi Effendi calls a chaste and holy life an essential factor in the vitality of the Bahá’í community, and explains that it means modesty, temperance and moderation in dress, language and amusements. Amid a culture that inflames appetite, chastity is not repression but a power that protects love.

Bahá’u’lláh names backbiting a ‘grievous error’ that quenches the light of the heart and extinguishes the life of the soul. In an age of group chats and comment threads, where talk about others spreads in seconds, His warning that the fire of the tongue endures a century weighs all the more.

When all around complained of a dead dog’s stench, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá recounts, Christ said, ‘Look at that dog’s teeth! How gleaming white!’ To see people through their faults makes friendship a formidable task; to see what is praiseworthy in them makes us friends to the whole human race.

Each of us is responsible for one life only, and that is our own. Each of us is immeasurably far from being ‘perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect’ and the task of perfecting our own life and character is one that requires all our attention, our will-power and energy. If we allow our attention and energy to be taken up in efforts to keep others right and remedy their faults, we are wasting precious time. We are like ploughmen each of whom has his team to manage and his plough to direct, and in order to keep his furrow straight he must keep his eye on his goal and concentrate on his own task. If he looks to this side and that to see how Tom and Harry are getting on and to criticise their ploughing, then his own furrow will assuredly become crooked.

Forgive Him Instantly

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá asks us to forgive instantly whoever wrongs us and to regard enemies as friends. He also distinguishes personal forgiveness from social justice: the individual has no right to revenge, while society must protect people through justice. It is an invitation to a life that does not nurse han, the long-held grievance, but releases it.

An individual has no right to seek revenge, but the body politic has the right to punish the criminal. Such punishment is intended to dissuade and deter others from committing similar crimes. It is for the protection of the rights of man and does not constitute revenge, for revenge is that inner gratification that results from returning like for like. This is not permissible, for no one has been given the right to seek revenge. And yet, if criminals were entirely left to their own devices, the order of the world would be disrupted. So while punishment is one of the essential requirements of the body politic, the wronged and aggrieved party has no right to seek revenge. On the contrary, he should show forgiveness and magnanimity, for this is that which befits the human world.

Consultation, the Lamp of Guidance

Bahá’u’lláh calls consultation the lamp of guidance and the bestower of understanding. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that the shining spark of truth comes forth only after the clash of differing opinions, and that no one should feel hurt at being opposed. In cultures accustomed to deferring to seniors, consultation in which all speak freely and seek truth together is a new kind of learning.

The ideal of Bahá’í consultation is to arrive at a unanimous decision. When this is not possible a vote must be taken. … As soon as a decision is reached it becomes the decision of the whole Assembly, not merely of those members who happened to be among the majority.

A Bahá’í who has a problem may wish to make his own decision upon it after prayer and after weighing all the aspects of it in his own mind; he may prefer to seek the counsel of individual friends or of professional counsellors such as his doctor or lawyer so that he can consider such advice when making his decision; or in a case where several people are involved, such as a family situation, he may want to gather together those who are affected so that they may arrive at a collective decision.

There cannot be in our Faith any room for the political maneuverings so common to the outside world. 24.

All Art Is a Gift of the Holy Spirit

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that the musician’s harmonies, the poet’s verse and the painter’s pictures all arise when the light of the Holy Spirit shines through the human mind. Bahá’u’lláh made music a ladder for the soul’s ascent. For Koreans, heirs of pansori, sijo and ink landscape painting, art has long been a way of cultivating the spirit.

“All Art is a gift of the Holy Spirit. When this light shines through the mind of a musician, it manifests itself in beautiful harmonies. Again, shining through the mind of a poet, it is seen in fine poetry and poetic prose. When the Light of the Sun of Truth inspires the mind of a painter, he produces marvellous pictures. These gifts are fulfilling their highest purpose, when showing forth the praise of God.”
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, quoted in Lady Blomfield, The Chosen Highway, in The Importance of the Arts in Promoting the Faith

Bahá’u’lláh describes nature as the embodiment of His Name, the Maker, the Creator, and as God’s Will expressed in the contingent world. The East Asian sensibility that read the Way in mountains and waters is here led not to worship nature, but to recognize the Creator through it.

Shoghi Effendi teaches that the human heart cannot be segregated from the environment: our inner life moulds the world around us and is deeply affected by it. In an age of climate crisis these words read anew, together with the teaching that mercy must reach not only human beings but every living creature.

Loyalty to Government

Bahá’u’lláh asks His followers, wherever they live, to behave towards their government with loyalty, honesty and truthfulness. This is not blind submission but a call to respect social order and to work, as citizens, for the true good of their nation.

We see, therefore, that we must do two things–shun politics like the plague, and be obedient to the Government in power in the place where we reside. We cannot start judging how a particular government came into power, and therefore whether we should obey it or not. This would immediately plunge us into politics. We must obey in all cases except where a spiritual principle is involved, such as denying our Faith. For these spiritual principles we must be willing to die.

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that joy gives us wings, while sadness makes us weak. He testifies that through forty years of imprisonment He was ‘supremely happy.’ Joy is not a gift of circumstance; it springs from a heart turned toward God.

Steadfast as the Mountain

Bahá’u’lláh teaches that, after recognizing God, the first duty of every soul is steadfastness in His Cause, ‘the king of all acts.’ Steadfastness that does not waver though the world oppose it is not stubbornness but the calm of a heart rooted in truth.

Suffering, of one kind or another, seems to be the portion of man in this world. Even the Beloved Ones, the Prophets of God, have never been exempt from the ills that are to be found in our world; poverty, disease, bereavement,–they seem to be part of the polish God employs to make us finer, and enable us to reflect more of His attributes!

We must always look ahead and seek to accomplish in the future what we may have failed to do in the past. Failures, tests, and trials, if we use them correctly, can become the means of purifying our spirit, strengthening our characters, and enable us to rise to greater heights of service.

Let Deeds, Not Words, Be Your Adorning

Bahá’u’lláh defines the essence of faith as ‘fewness of words and abundance of deeds,’ and warns against walking in the ways of those whose words differ from their deeds. As Wang Yangming taught the unity of knowing and doing, faith shines only when knowledge becomes action.

Verily I say unto thee: Of all men the most negligent is he that disputeth idly and seeketh to advance himself over his brother. Say: O brethren! Let deeds, not words, be your adorning.

The essence of faith is fewness of words and abundance of deeds; he whose words exceed his deeds, know verily his death is better than his life.
Bahá’u’lláh, Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, Aṣl‑i‑Kullu’l‑Khayr (Words of Wisdom)

Say: Beware, O people of Bahá, lest ye walk in the ways of them whose words differ from their deeds. Strive that ye may be enabled to manifest to the peoples of the earth the signs of God, and to mirror forth His commandments. Let your acts be a guide unto all mankind, for the professions of most men, be they high or low, differ from their conduct. It is through your deeds that ye can distinguish yourselves from others. Through them the brightness of your light can be shed upon the whole earth.
Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, CXXXIX

The great thing is to ‘Live the Life’–to have our lives so saturated with the Divine teachings and the Bahá’í Spirit that people cannot fail to see a joy, a power, a love, a purity, a radiance, an efficiency in our character and work that will distinguish us from worldly-minded people and make people wonder what is the secret of this new life in us. … Unless we can show this transformation in our lives, this new power, this mutual love and harmony, then the Bahá’í teachings are but a name to us.

Prayer and meditation are very important factors in deepening the spiritual life of the individual, but with them must go also action and example, as these are the tangible results of the former. Both are essential.

Bring Thyself to Account Each Day

Zengzi said, ‘Each day I examine myself on three points.’ Bahá’u’lláh bids us bring ourselves to account each day before we are summoned to a reckoning, and teaches that true loss belongs to one whose days are spent in ignorance of his own self.

He strongly urges you not to dwell on yourself. Each one of us, if we look into our failures, is sure to feel unworthy and despondent, and this feeling only frustrates our constructive efforts and wastes time.

What every believer, new or old, should realize is that the Cause has the spiritual power to re-create us if we make the effort to let that power influence us, and the greatest help in this respect is prayer.
