The Two Natures in Man

East Asian ethics always begins by asking what a human being is. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that a spiritual nature that draws near to God and a material nature bound to the world dwell together in us, and that ethics is the path by which the higher nature comes to lead the lower.

In man there are two natures: his spiritual or higher nature and his material or lower nature. In one he approaches God, in the other he lives for the world alone. Signs of both these natures are to be found in men. In his material aspect he expresses untruth, cruelty and injustice; all these are the outcome of his lower nature. The attributes of his Divine nature are shown forth in love, mercy, kindness, truth and justice, one and all being expressions of his higher nature. Every good habit, every noble quality belongs to man’s spiritual nature, whereas all his imperfections and sinful actions are born of his material nature. If a man’s Divine nature dominates his human nature, we have a saint.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, 18

Know that there are two natures in man: the material and the spiritual. The material nature is inherited from Adam, while the spiritual nature is inherited from the reality of the Word of God, which is the spirituality of Christ. The material nature is born of Adam, but the spiritual nature is born of the grace of the Holy Spirit. The material nature is the source of every imperfection, and the spiritual nature is the source of all perfection.

Where the Wisdom of the Sages Comes From

East Asian ethical thought has always revered the teachings of the sages. Bahá’u’lláh writes that the essence and fundamentals of philosophy flowed from the Prophets and that the sages of old drew their wisdom from that treasury, reminding us that reasoned inquiry and the light of revelation are not at odds.

Benevolence: Love, the Heart of Humanity

Confucius saw the heart of humanity in ren, benevolence, which he defined as “to love others,” a love that begins close at hand and widens outward. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá speaks of Confucius as one who “renewed the ancient conduct and morals,” and the Writings call that love to reach beyond family and nation to all humankind.

As regards the meaning of Bahá’u’lláh’s words regarding love of humanity, the Master often explained it to mean that man should love his family, then his native town, then his province, then his nation, but should not stop there and acquire a narrow nationalism, but grow to love the whole-wide world and mankind at large. Bahá’ís love their country but should also love the world, that is, other peoples.

Courtesy, the Prince of Virtues

Confucius taught that “to master oneself and return to propriety is benevolence,” so that inner love takes outward form in right bearing and ritual courtesy. Bahá’u’lláh calls courtesy “the prince of virtues,” a garment of the soul woven not from mere form but from truthfulness and justice.

Bahá’u’lláh, Lawḥ-i-Dunyá (Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh)

Each in Their Rightful Station

Confucius taught the “rectification of names” (let the ruler be a ruler, the minister a minister, the parent a parent, the child a child) and rule by virtue rather than by punishment. Bahá’u’lláh likewise calls those who govern to live up to their station, above all through justice and the fear of God.

Honouring Our Parents

Confucianism held filial piety to be the root of all virtue, and it still runs deep in Korean life. Bahá’u’lláh declares that, after recognizing the unity of God, the greatest of fruits is regard for the rights due to one’s parents, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that our good deeds and prayers on their behalf continue even after they pass on.

The fruits that best befit the tree of human life are trustworthiness and godliness, truthfulness and sincerity; but greater than all, after recognition of the unity of God, praised and glorified be He, is regard for the rights that are due to one’s parents. This teaching hath been mentioned in all the Books of God, and reaffirmed by the Most Exalted Pen. Consider that which the Merciful Lord hath revealed in the Qur’án, exalted are His words: “Worship ye God, join with Him no peer or likeness; and show forth kindliness and charity towards your parents…” Observe how loving-kindness to one’s parents hath been linked to recognition of the one true God!
Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitáb-i-Aqdas, Questions and Answers, 106

Likewise, parents endure the greatest toil and trouble for their children, and often, by the time the latter have reached the age of maturity, the former have hastened to the world beyond. Rarely do the mother and father enjoy in this world the rewards of all the pain and trouble they have endured for their children. The children must therefore, in return for this pain and trouble, make charitable contributions and perform good works in their name, and implore pardon and forgiveness for their souls. You should therefore, in return for the love and kindness of your father, give to the poor in his name and, with the utmost lowliness and fervour, pray for God’s pardon and forgiveness and seek His infinite mercy.

Created Noble

Mencius pointed out that anyone who suddenly sees a child about to fall into a well feels alarm and compassion, and concluded that human nature is originally good. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likewise teaches that the innate nature God has given us is “purely good,” and that evil arises not from that nature itself but from its misuse.

It follows therefore that in existence and creation there is no evil at all, but that when man’s innate qualities are used in an unlawful way, they become blameworthy. Thus if a wealthy and generous person gives alms to a poor man to spend on his necessities, and if the latter spends that sum in an improper way, that is blameworthy. The same holds true of all the innate qualities of man which constitute the capital of human life: If they are displayed and employed in an improper way, they become blameworthy. It is clear then that the innate nature is purely good.

The Four Sprouts of Virtue

Mencius named four feelings (compassion, shame, deference and the sense of right and wrong) the “sprouts” of benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom, to be nurtured and extended. Bahá’u’lláh likewise teaches that God-given powers lie latent in us “even as the flame is hidden within the candle,” and that seeds of virtue such as the sense of shame must be brought to flower through education.

The Poor Are Thy Treasures

Mencius urged the Kingly Way of humane care over the Way of force, declaring that “the people are the most precious.” In His letter to the Sultan, Bahá’u’lláh likewise calls the poor “thy treasures on earth” and asks that a ruler be as just and bountiful as the sun.

This Bahá’í teaching of human fellowship and kindness implies that we must be always ready to extend every assistance and help we can to those who are in distress and suffering. Bahá’í charity is of the very essence of the Teachings, and should therefore be developed in every Bahá’í community. Charitable institutions such as orphanages, free schools and hospitals for the poor, constitute an indispensable part of the Mashriqu’l-Adhkár. It is the responsibility of every local Bahá’í community to insure the welfare of its poor and needy members, through whatever means possible.

Mencius spoke of the “flood-like qi” nourished by steadily accumulating righteousness, and called a “great man” one whom wealth cannot corrupt, poverty cannot shake and force cannot bend. Bahá’u’lláh likewise bids us become “as steadfast and immovable as the mountain,” and names steadfastness in God’s love as the source of true courage and power.

These, indeed, are the days when heroism is needed on the part of the believers. Self-sacrifice, courage, indomitable hope and confidence are the characteristics they should show forth, because these very attributes cannot but fix the attention of the public and leads them to enquire what, in a world so hopelessly chaotic and bewildered, leads these people to be so assured, so confident, so full of devotion? Increasingly, as time goes by, the characteristics of the Bahá’ís will be that which captures the attention of their fellow-citizens. They must show their aloofness from the hatreds and recriminations which are tearing at the heart of humanity, and demonstrate by deed and word their profound belief in the future peaceful unification of the entire human race.

Left to Nature, Lower than the Beasts

Xunzi held that human beings are born loving profit and following desire, so that left alone they fall into strife and disorder; hence he called human nature “bad.” ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá also warns that a person abandoned to nature without education can sink lower than the animals, yet adds that desire itself, rightly directed, becomes a praiseworthy power.

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Some Answered Questions, 3

In the innate nature of things there is no evil—all is good. This applies even to certain apparently blameworthy attributes and dispositions which seem inherent in some people, but which are not in reality reprehensible. For example, you can see in a nursing child, from the beginning of its life, the signs of greed, of anger, and of ill temper; and so it might be argued that good and evil are innate in the reality of man, and that this is contrary to the pure goodness of the innate nature and of creation. The answer is that greed, which is to demand ever more, is a praiseworthy quality provided that it is displayed under the right circumstances. Thus, should a person show greed in acquiring science and knowledge, or in the exercise of compassion, high-mindedness, and justice, this would be most praiseworthy. And should he direct his anger and wrath against the bloodthirsty tyrants who are like ferocious beasts, this too would be most praiseworthy. But should he display these qualities under other conditions, this would be deserving of blame.

You ask him about the fear of God: perhaps the friends do not realize that the majority of human beings need the element of fear in order to discipline their conduct? Only a relatively very highly evolved soul would always be disciplined by love alone. Fear of punishment, fear of the anger of God if we do evil, are needed to keep people’s feet on the right path. Of course we should love God–but we must fear Him in the sense of a child fearing the righteous anger and chastisement of a parent; not cringe before Him as before a tyrant, but know His mercy exceeds His Justice!

Education Transforms the Soul

Xunzi taught that, as a warped board is straightened, our nature is transformed and goodness achieved through the rites and learning established by the sages. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá too says that through education “the crooked branch becomes straight, the acrid and bitter fruit becomes sweet,” and asks that education be given the greatest importance.

As to the differences of character arising from education, they are great indeed, for education exerts an enormous influence. Through education the ignorant become learned, the cowardly become courageous, the crooked branch becomes straight, the acrid and bitter fruit of the mountains and woods becomes sweet and succulent, and the five-petalled flower puts forth a hundred petals. Through education barbarous nations become civilized and even animals take on human-like manners. Education must be accorded the greatest importance; for just as diseases are highly communicable in the world of bodies, so is character highly communicable in the realm of hearts and spirits. The differences caused by education are enormous and exert a major influence.

Two That Are One, Yet Distinct

Zhu Xi taught that all things consist of li, the principle prior to form, and qi, the material force that gives form, two that are neither separable nor to be confused. Bahá’u’lláh likewise writes that existence arose from the interaction of an active force and its recipient, “the same, yet different,” and that both proceed from the Word of God, the Cause of all creation.

Reverence and Inquiry

Zhu Xi made two wheels of learning: abiding in reverence, keeping the mind awake and respectful, and exhausting principle, investigating things to the end. 16.

The Light Hidden in Every Heart

Wang Yangming taught that everyone possesses liangzhi, an innate knowing of good and evil that needs no teaching, and that learning means removing the screen of selfish desire so that it is fully realized. Bahá’u’lláh likewise says the effulgence of divine light “is present within the hearts, yet it is hidden beneath the veils of selfish desires,” shining out only when the cover is lifted.

Wang Yangming taught that “to know and not to act is not yet to know,” holding knowledge and action to be one. The Writings say that “the essence of faith is fewness of words and abundance of deeds,” and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá remarks that thoughts which never reach the plane of action remain useless, while the true Spiritual Teacher is the first to follow His own teaching.

The great thing is to ‘Live the Life’–to have our lives so saturated with the Divine teachings and the Bahá’í Spirit that people cannot fail to see a joy, a power, a love, a purity, a radiance, an efficiency in our character and work that will distinguish us from worldly-minded people and make people wonder what is the secret of this new life in us. We must become entirely selfless and devoted to God so that every day and every moment we seek to do only what God would have us do and in the way He would have us do it. If we do this sincerely then we shall have perfect unity and harmony with each other. Where there is want of harmony there is lack of the true Bahá’í Spirit. Unless we can show this transformation in our lives, this new power, this mutual love and harmony, then the Bahá’í teachings are but a name to us.

When the Higher Nature Leads

In his Four-Seven debate with Gi Dae-seung, Toegye Yi Hwang held that the Four Beginnings issue from principle with material force following, while the Seven Feelings issue from material force with principle riding on them, so as to guard the pure source of moral feeling. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likewise teaches that man stands on the line between light and darkness: if the rational faculty prevails he shines on high, if the lower nature prevails he falls into darkness. Everything depends on which leads.

Man, however, hath a twofold station: one luminous, the other dark; one pertaining to the realm of the Divine, the other to the world of nature; one inclined towards heavenly virtues, the other towards satanic qualities. For man standeth on the demarcation line between light and darkness. In the circle of existence, he is situated at the lowest point, which marketh at once the end of the arc of descent and the beginning of the arc of ascent. For this reason, he is free to move in either direction: towards light or darkness, towards ignorance or guidance—depending on the one that prevaileth. Should the rational faculty prevail, man would shine radiantly and occupy a lofty station in the realms on high. And should the self and the lower nature prevail, the result would be darkness and he would fall into the nethermost fire. For in man the powers of the heavenly Kingdom and the forces of his animal nature are at war until one or the other doth triumph.

Sciences That Profit the People

Jeong Yak-yong sought learning that truly benefits people’s lives rather than empty theorizing, and in his Admonitions on Governing the People he stressed the integrity and care of officials. Bahá’u’lláh likewise bids us study sciences that are useful for the progress of the people, not those that “begin with words and end with words,” and exalts diligent work in a craft or trade to the rank of worship.

The Buddha awakened to dependent origination, “this being, that becomes; this ceasing, that ceases,” teaching that nothing exists alone and all things arise in mutual dependence. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likewise says that “all beings are linked together like a chain,” that mutual aid and interaction are the cause of their formation and growth, and that union and love bring life while separation brings death.

The Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths: life is suffering, its origin is craving and attachment, there is its cessation, and there is a path leading to it. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likewise teaches that our sorrows are born in the world of matter while the spiritual Kingdom never causes sadness, and that grief and trial come not by chance but from the Divine Mercy for our perfecting.

The Buddha taught the Middle Way that avoids the extremes of indulgence and self-mortification, and the Noble Eightfold Path of right view, right intention, right speech, right action and the rest. Bahá’u’lláh likewise says that “in all matters moderation is desirable,” warning that even good things such as liberty and civilization become harmful when carried beyond the bounds of moderation.

Buddhist compassion is the wish to give joy and relieve the suffering of all sentient beings, reaching beyond humans to every living creature. Bahá’u’lláh likewise says the true seeker “should show kindness to animals, how much more unto his fellowman,” and names forbearance, mercy, compassion and loving-kindness as the virtues befitting human dignity.

In regard to the question as to whether people ought to kill animals for food or not, there is no explicit statement in the Bahá’í Sacred Scriptures (as far as I know) in favour or against it. 28.

Dying to Self

The Buddha taught that there is no abiding self, so as to cut attachment to the ego. In the last of the Seven Valleys, “True Poverty and Absolute Nothingness,” Bahá’u’lláh likewise describes “dying to the self and living in God,” an emptiness that is not void but fullness, being “rich in the Desired One.”

Regarding the questions you asked: Self has really two meanings, or is used in two senses, in the Bahá’í writings: one is self, the identity of the individual created by God. This is the self mentioned in such passages as ‘he hath known God who hath known himself etc.’. The other self is the ego, the dark, animalistic heritage each one of us has, the lower nature that can develop into a monster of selfishness, brutality, lust and so on. It is this self we must struggle against, or this side of our natures, in order to strengthen and free the spirit within us and help it to attain perfection.

A Show, Vain and Empty

Mahayana Buddhism holds that all things are empty, lacking fixed self-nature since they arise from conditions, and that all compounded things are impermanent. Bahá’u’lláh likewise calls the world “a show, vain and empty, a mere nothing, bearing the semblance of reality,” like a mirage, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá explains that creation is non-existence in relation to God. Yet the Writings point beyond this transience to the eternal God.

In a Tablet Bahá’u’lláh says that even though absolute being can be attributed only to God we cannot say that other objects have no being. A table has an existence even though its existence compared with the existence of the carpenter who is its maker is almost nothing. Compared to God nothing has existence but this does not mean that even stones do not have being. It is speaking relatively. Moreover, God reveals Himself in all things in the sense that He is the Source of their being and the Cause of their existence. Without Him all things will shrink down to nothing. This however does not mean that all things are parts of God as the pantheist believes. The pantheist says that only God exists, objects are mere modes of His attributes. Bahá’u’lláh however says that objects have a separate reality that is created by God.

Ready to Lay Down Your Lives for All

The bodhisattva of Mahayana Buddhism seeks enlightenment above while saving beings below, postponing final nirvana until all are saved. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likewise asks us to be ready to lay down our lives “not only for those who are dear to you, but for all humanity,” and Bahá’u’lláh calls blessed the one “who preferreth his brother before himself.”

The Key That Opens the Doors of Mysteries

Chan or Seon Buddhism, “not relying on words,” points directly to the mind so that one sees one’s nature and becomes a Buddha, and it treasures silent meditation. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls meditation “the key for opening the doors of mysteries,” and says that when, in silence, we turn our faces to the Source of Light, the mysteries of the Kingdom are reflected in the heart.

Through meditation the doors of deeper knowledge and inspiration may be opened. Naturally, if one meditates as a Bahá’í he is connected with the Source; if a man believing in God meditates he is tuning in to the power and mercy of God; but we cannot say that any inspiration which a person, not knowing Bahá’u’lláh, or not believing in God, receives is merely from his own ego. Meditation is very important, and the Guardian sees no reason why the friends should not be taught to meditate, but they should guard against superstitious or foolish ideas creeping into it.

There are, of course, other things that one can do to increase one’s spirituality. For example, Bahá’u’lláh has specified no procedures to be followed in meditation, and individual believers are free to do as they wish in this area, provided that they remain in harmony with the teachings, but such activities are purely personal and should under no circumstances be confused with those actions which Bahá’u’lláh Himself considered to be of fundamental importance for our spiritual growth. Some believers may find that it is beneficial to them to follow a particular method of meditation, and they may certainly do so, but such methods should not be taught at Bahá’í Summer Schools or be carried out during a session of the School because, while they may appeal to some people, they may repel others. They have nothing to do with the Faith and should be kept quite separate so that enquirers will not be confused.

One Heart Beyond All Disputes

Wonhyo saw all things as arising from the One Mind, reconciled the disputes of rival doctrines by showing each held part of the truth, and lived an unhindered life among ordinary people, teaching them in song. Bahá’u’lláh likewise explains that conflict arises because people stand on different planes and see only the colour of the glass rather than the light itself, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá speaks of the day when all will know themselves “leaves of one tree, drops in one ocean.”

National Preceptor Uicheon taught that scriptural study and contemplative practice must be cultivated together, and Jinul taught the joint cultivation of samadhi, which stills the mind, and prajna, which illumines it. The Writings likewise ask us to walk both paths: meditation, through which “he receives the breath of the Holy Spirit,” and knowledge, honoured as “the greatest human virtue.”

Bahá’u’lláh has stated quite clearly in His Writings the essential requisites for our spiritual growth, and these are stressed again and again by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in His Talks and Tablets. One can summarise them briefly in this way: 1. The recital each day of one of the Obligatory Prayers with purehearted devotion. 2. The regular reading of the Sacred Scriptures, specifically at least each morning and evening, with reverence, attention and thought. 3. Prayerful meditation on the teachings, so that we may understand them more deeply, fulfil them more faithfully, and convey them more accurately to others. 4. Striving every day to bring our behaviour more into accordance with the high standards that are set forth in the Teachings. 5. Teaching the Cause of God. 6. 34.

Sudden Awakening, Gradual Cultivation

Jinul taught that even after sudden awakening to the truth that one’s own mind is Buddha, gradual cultivation must follow to wear away long-held habits. Bahá’u’lláh likewise calls recognition of the Manifestation of God and observance of His laws “twin duties” that “are inseparable,” and says the path of search requires a patience that does not falter though one strive a hundred thousand years.

Laozi wrote that “the Dao that can be told is not the eternal Dao; the name that can be named is not the eternal name,” holding the source of all things to lie beyond human words and concepts.

We find God only through the Intermediary of His Prophet. We see the Perfection of God in His Prophets. Time and space are physical things; God the Creator is not in a ‘place’ as we conceive of place in physical terms. God is the Infinite Essence, the Creator. We cannot picture Him or His state; if we did, we would be His equals, not His Creatures. God is never flesh, but mirrored in the attributes of His Prophets, we see His Divine characteristics and perfections.

Nature, the Expression of God’s Will

Laozi taught wu wei, non-striving action that follows the self-so way of nature. Bahá’u’lláh writes that “Nature is God’s Will and is its expression in and through the contingent world,” and that the source of all good is trust in God and contentment with His will; here the humility that lays down forcing becomes trustful surrender to the divine Will.

What is meant by a personal God is a God Who is conscious of His creation, Who has a Mind, a Will, a Purpose, and not, as many scientists and materialists believe, an unconscious and determined force operating in the universe. Such conception of the Diving Being, as the Supreme and ever present Reality in the world, is not anthropomorphic, for it transcends all human limitations and forms, and does by no means attempt to define the essence of Divinity which is obviously beyond any human comprehension. To say that God is a personal Reality does not mean that He has a physical form, or does in any way resemble a human being. To entertain such belief would be sheer blasphemy.

Humble Thyself Before Me

Laozi said that “the highest good is like water,” which benefits all things without contending and dwells in the low places others disdain. Bahá’u’lláh likewise says, “Humble thyself before Me, that I may graciously visit thee,” and teaches that the seeker must never seek to exalt himself above anyone.

Content with Little

Laozi pictured a small state with few people living simply, leaving clever devices unused, finding their food sweet and their clothes beautiful. Bahá’u’lláh likewise says the seeker “should be content with little, and be freed from all inordinate desire,” calls the thought that gold makes us rich “thy fancy,” and warns that civilization itself becomes a source of evil when it exceeds moderation.

True Liberty

Zhuangzi sang of the free and easy wandering of a spirit that, like the great Peng bird soaring ninety thousand li, is bound by neither worldly use nor fame nor distinctions. Bahá’u’lláh warns against mistaking licence for liberty and teaches that true liberty lies in complete servitude to God, whose sweetness one would not barter for all the dominion of earth and heaven.

Where First and Last Are One

Zhuangzi showed that distinctions of right and wrong, great and small, life and death are relative to where one stands, and spoke of seeing all things as equal. Bahá’u’lláh likewise observes that one is first in relation to one’s son and last in relation to one’s father, that such terms belong to “the sphere of that which is relative,” and that for those who reach the realm beyond, “the first is the same as the last.”

These statements are made in the sphere of that which is relative. And they swim in the sea of the spirit, and soar in the holy atmosphere of light. Then what existence have words, on such a plane, that “first” and “last”, or other than these, should be mentioned or described? In this realm, the first is the same as the last, and the last is the same as the first.

Fasting of the Heart

Zhuangzi spoke of the “fasting of the heart” that empties the mind to receive the Dao, and of “sitting and forgetting” self, knowledge and distinctions. Bahá’u’lláh likewise bids us cleanse the heart of every marking and turn from imitation of our forefathers, and to “forget them one and all” that we may learn from the Master of Love in the schoolhouse of Divine Unity; this emptying makes room for the light of God.

Hongik ingan, “to broadly benefit humanity,” the ideal carried in the Dangun myth, is also the founding principle of Korean education. Bahá’u’lláh writes that “all men have been created to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization” and that “that one indeed is a man who, today, dedicateth himself to the service of the entire human race”; the ancient ideal meets the calling of a new age that embraces all humankind.

‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Some Answered Questions, 43

The only reason there is not more mention of the Asiatic prophets is because their names seem to be lost in the mists of ancient history. Buddha is mentioned and Zoroaster in our scriptures–both non-Jewish prophets or non-semitic prophets. We are taught there always have been Manifestations of God, but we do not have any record of their names.

Find Me Standing Within Thee

Choe Je-u taught sicheonju, that everyone bears the Lord of Heaven within the heart, and Son Byeong-hui summed it up as innaecheon, “the human being is Heaven,” proclaiming a dignity beyond all distinctions of rank. Bahá’u’lláh likewise says, “Turn thy sight unto thyself, that thou mayest find Me standing within thee,” and calls man a mirror of all God’s names and attributes; yet the Writings make clear that, as the sun in the mirror is not the sun itself, God remains exalted above every comparison.

I created thee rich, why dost thou bring thyself down to poverty? Noble I made thee, wherewith dost thou abase thyself? Out of the essence of knowledge I gave thee being, why seekest thou enlightenment from anyone beside Me? Out of the clay of love I molded thee, how dost thou busy thyself with another? Turn thy sight unto thyself, that thou mayest find Me standing within thee, mighty, powerful and self-subsisting.

Thus man is a perfect mirror facing the Sun of Truth and is the seat of its reflection. The splendour of all the divine perfections is manifest in the reality of man, and it is for this reason that he is the vicegerent and apostle of God. If man did not exist, the universe would be without result, for the purpose of existence is the revelation of the divine perfections.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Some Answered Questions, 50

For in him are potentially revealed all the attributes and names of God to a degree that no other created being hath excelled or surpassed. All these names and attributes are applicable to him. Even as He hath said: “Man is My mystery, and I am his mystery.”

He is indeed a true believer in the unity of God who, in this Day, will regard Him as One immeasurably exalted above all the comparisons and likenesses with which men have compared Him. He hath erred grievously who hath mistaken these comparisons and likenesses for God Himself. Consider the relation between the craftsman and his handiwork, between the painter and his painting. Can it ever be maintained that the work their hands have produced is the same as themselves?

In Every Face the Beauty of the Friend

Choe Si-hyeong taught sainyeocheon, “serve people as you would serve Heaven,” asking that children, women and outcasts be honoured as the Lord of Heaven. Bahá’u’lláh likewise says that God created us all from the same dust “that no one should exalt himself over the other,” and that the true seeker looks for “the beauty of the Friend” in every face.

On this journey the wayfarer dwelleth in every abode, however humble, and resideth in every land. In every face he seeketh the beauty of the Friend; in every region he searcheth after the Beloved. He joineth every company and seeketh fellowship with every soul, that haply in some heart he may discern the secret of the Beloved, or in some face behold the beauty of the Adored One.
