Ethics and Thought II: Western Ethical and Social Thought
Is Man the Measure of All Things?
The Sophists taught that "man is the measure of all things," so that truth and goodness vary from person to person and city to city; this also helped people question custom and authority. The Writings likewise urge each soul to investigate truth rather than inherit it blindly, yet they hold that honest search leads toward one reality. Where old custom and new ideas meet, as in East Asia today, this balance is precious.

Religion is reality, and reality is one. The fundamentals of the religion of God are, therefore, one in reality. There is neither difference nor change in the fundamentals. Variance is caused by blind imitations, prejudices and adherence to forms which appear later; and inasmuch as these differ, discord and strife result. If the religions of the world would forsake these causes of difficulty and seek the fundamentals, all would agree, and strife and dissension would pass away; for religion and reality are one and not multiple.

The first is the independent investigation of truth; for blind imitation of the past will stunt the mind. The Wisdom of Knowing One’s Poverty
Socrates held that wisdom begins in knowing that one does not know, and he roused his fellow citizens through questioning until he was given hemlock. Bahá’u’lláh praised him as "the most distinguished of all philosophers," and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá said he taught the oneness of God and the immortality of the soul. In the Writings, true understanding likewise begins with the humility of confessing one’s own poverty.

After him came Socrates who was indeed wise, accomplished and righteous. He practiced self-denial, repressed his appetites for selfish desires and turned away from material pleasures. He withdrew to the mountains where he dwelt in a cave. He dissuaded men from worshipping idols and taught them the way of God, the Lord of Mercy, until the ignorant rose up against him. They arrested him and put him to death in prison. Thus relateth to thee this swift-moving Pen. What a penetrating vision into philosophy this eminent man had! Knowledge That Becomes Deed
Socrates bound knowing and doing together: whoever truly knows the good will do it. The Writings honor knowledge highly, yet they insist again and again that words and learning are empty unless they become deeds. The teaching resonates with the East Asian Wang Yangming tradition of the unity of knowledge and action.

The Shadow and the Reality
Plato held that the world of the senses is a shadow of the true reality of the Forms, and in the allegory of the cave he taught that the soul must turn toward the light. Bahá’u’lláh called him "the divine Plato," and the Writings too describe this world as a reflection in a mirror. Yet ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá adds that created things, though shadows beside God, truly exist in their own degree.

The Two Natures in Man
Plato divided the soul into reason, spirit and appetite, and taught that the soul is just when reason governs the rest. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá speaks of a spiritual and a material nature in man, and says a person becomes truly human when the divine nature rules. The insight echoes the East Asian distinction between the mind of the Way and the human mind.

The attributes of his Divine nature are shown forth in love, mercy, kindness, truth and justice, one and all being expressions of his higher nature. Every good habit, every noble quality belongs to man’s spiritual nature, whereas all his imperfections and sinful actions are born of his material nature. Rulers Weighed in the Divine Balance
Plato believed a state becomes just when philosophers, lovers of wisdom, rule. The Writings ask rulers for wisdom, justice and a sense of accountability before God, while placing their deeper trust in consultation and the order of law rather than in one exceptional person. The theme invites dialogue with the Confucian ideal of the sage-king who governs by virtue.

There is a distinction of fundamental importance which should be always remembered in this connection, and this is between the Spiritual Assembly as an institution, and the persons who compose it. These are by no means supposed to be perfect, nor can they be considered as being inherently superior to the rest of their fellow believers. It is precisely because they are subject to the same human limitations that characterize the other members of the community that they have to be elected every year. The existence of elections is a sufficient indication that Assembly members, though forming part of an institution that is divine and perfect, are nevertheless themselves imperfect. 7.
The Felicity of the Human World

In All Matters Moderation
Aristotle saw virtue as the fitting mean between excess and deficiency. Bahá’u’lláh likewise warns that whatever passes the bounds of moderation becomes harmful, and that even liberty and civilization, carried to excess, become a source of evil. For East Asian readers raised on the Doctrine of the Mean, the teaching is at once familiar and new.

Aristotle taught that intellectual virtue grows through teaching and moral virtue through habit, so that we become good by repeatedly doing good. Bahá’u’lláh likens man to a mine rich in gems and says that education alone can reveal its treasures. The words reach to the root of what character education means.

Man is the supreme Talisman. Lack of a proper education hath, however, deprived him of that which he doth inherently possess. Through a word proceeding out of the mouth of God he was called into being; by one word more he was guided to recognize the Source of his education; by yet another word his station and destiny were safeguarded. The Great Being saith: Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.

Epicurus held pleasure to be the good, but the pleasure he meant was not indulgence; it was a simple life free from bodily pain and anxiety of mind. The Writings likewise counsel us not to be captured by passing pleasures and to seek contentment, finding true joy in what endures. In an age where consumption promises happiness, the counsel is worth hearing.

The Epicureans saw ataraxia, an untroubled mind freed from fear of death and of the gods, as the fulfilment of happiness. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that troubles still come to one who lives in the spiritual Kingdom, but they only touch the surface of life; the depths remain calm and serene. The difference is that serenity springs not from removing fear but from trust in God.

The Stoics taught living according to the reason (logos) that governs the cosmos, and saw apatheia, freedom from being shaken by what lies beyond our power, as the height of virtue. The Writings speak less of suppressing passion than of a detachment that turns the heart to God, and ask us to receive trials as God’s mercy for our perfecting. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá’s witness that he was "supremely happy" through forty years of imprisonment is its living example.

Bacon urged us to cast off the idols of prejudice and to know nature by induction from observation and experiment, opening the way for modern science. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá accepts the senses as one criterion of knowledge, yet notes that, like an eye that takes a mirage for water, they cannot alone grasp reality. The Writings ask us to weigh sense, reason, tradition and inspiration together.

The first criterion is that of the senses; that is, all that the eye, the ear, the taste, the smell, and the touch perceive is called “sensible”. At present all the European philosophers hold this to be the most perfect criterion. They claim that the greatest of all criteria is that of the senses, and they regard it as sacrosanct. And yet the criterion of the senses is defective, as it can err. For example, the greatest of the senses is the power of vision. The vision, however, sees a mirage as water and reckons images reflected in mirrors as real and existing; it sees large bodies as small, perceives a whirling point as a circle, imagines the earth to be stationary and the sun to be in motion, and is subject to many other errors of a similar nature. One cannot therefore rely implicitly upon it.

But a statement presented to the mind accompanied by proofs which the senses can perceive to be correct, which the faculty of reason can accept, which is in accord with traditional authority and sanctioned by the promptings of the heart, can be adjudged and relied upon as perfectly correct, for it has been proved and tested by all the standards of judgment and found to be complete.

By materialists, whose belief with regard to Divinity hath been explained, is not meant philosophers in general, but rather that group of materialists of narrow vision who worship that which is sensed, who depend upon the five senses only, and whose criterion of knowledge is limited to that which can be perceived by the senses. All that can be sensed is to them real, whilst whatever falleth not under the power of the senses is either unreal or doubtful.

Bahá’u’lláh has said that learning can be the veil between the soul of man and the eternal truth; in other words, between man and the knowledge of God. We have seen that many people who become very advanced in the study of modern physical sciences are led to deny God, and to deny His Prophets. That does not mean that God and the Prophets have not and do not exist. It only means that knowledge has become a veil between their hearts and the light of God. 18.
The Light of the Intellect
Descartes doubted everything until he reached the one thing he could not doubt, the existence of the thinking self, and made clear and distinct reason the foundation of knowledge. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá too calls the intellect the most precious gift God has given man, yet observes that philosophers reach opposing conclusions by the same reason, so it too is not a perfect criterion. Certitude, He says, comes at last through the grace of the Holy Spirit.

It is therefore evident that the criterion of reason is imperfect, as proven by the disagreements existing between the ancient philosophers as well as by their want of consistency and their propensity to change their own views. For if the criterion of intellect were perfect, all should have been united in their thoughts and agreed in their opinions.

The Teachings of Bahá’u’lláh throw light on so many aspects of human life and knowledge that a Bahá’í must learn, earlier than most, to weigh the information that is given to him rather than to accept it blindly. A Bahá’í has the advantage of the divine Revelation for this Age, which shines like a searchlight on so many problems that baffle modern thinkers; he must therefore develop the ability to learn everything from those around him, showing proper humility before his teachers, but always relating what he hears to the Bahá’í teachings, for they will enable him to sort out the gold from the dross of human error. 19.
Beyond the Struggle for Existence
Hobbes described the state of nature without government as "a war of all against all," from which people escape by contract, entrusting their rights to a strong sovereign. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá also says that man captive to nature is a ferocious animal and that the struggle for existence is the source of all calamities, yet holds that education and the power of the spirit can carry humanity beyond it. The Universal House of Justice calls the belief that humans are incorrigibly selfish and aggressive a falsehood.

Hume held that reason alone cannot move us to act and that morality springs from feelings such as sympathy, saying that "reason is the slave of the passions." The Writings honor reason yet also respect the promptings of the heart and spiritual feeling as a criterion of knowing, and see love as the force that moves all things. They add, however, that the heart’s promptings can mislead and must be weighed alongside reason.

Noble Have I Created Thee
Kant taught that we must never treat a person merely as a means but always as an end, placing human dignity at the center of morality. Bahá’u’lláh says, "Noble have I created thee," and that to act like the beasts of the field is unworthy of man. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá adds that God has made us masters over the material world, so we must not become its slaves.

In Perpetual Peace Kant argued that war could be ended through a federation of republics and a cosmopolitan law, laying the groundwork for the League of Nations and the United Nations. Bahá’u’lláh had already called on the world’s rulers to gather and lay the foundations of the Most Great Peace, with all rising together against any aggressor in a system of collective security. Shoghi Effendi explained this as a world commonwealth beyond unfettered national sovereignty.

As you are no doubt aware, the Guardian indicated that the development of mankind from its present chaotic condition to the stage of the Bahá’í World Commonwealth would be a long and gradual one.
Bentham held that the good is to increase pleasure and reduce pain, and that the right act brings "the greatest happiness of the greatest number." Bahá’u’lláh too blesses the one who arises to promote the best interests of all the peoples of the earth, and bids us forsake what profits ourselves for what profits mankind. Yet in the Writings the measure of benefit is not a sum of pleasures but the unity and spiritual progress of humanity.

Indeed, the chief reason for the evils now rampant in society is the lack of spirituality. The materialistic civilization of our age has so much absorbed the energy and interest of mankind that people in general do no longer feel the necessity of raising themselves above the forces and conditions of their daily material existence. There is not sufficient demand for things that we should call spiritual to differentiate them from the needs and requirements of our physical existence. … The universal crisis affecting mankind is, therefore, essentially spiritual in its causes. The spirit of the age, taken on the whole, is irreligious. Man’s outlook on life is too crude and materialistic to enable him to elevate himself into the higher realms of the spirit. 28.

Mill held that pleasures differ in quality, the pleasures of the mind ranking above those of the body, and said it is "better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied." ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says all sorrow comes from the world of matter while the spiritual world bestows only joy, and calls spirituality the greatest of God’s gifts. With it comes the teaching that material progress is real progress only when it goes hand in hand with spirituality.

In On Liberty Mill argued that individual freedom of thought and action should be left untouched so long as it harms no one else. The Writings so value free expression that they ask each member of a consultative body to speak "with absolute freedom," yet Bahá’u’lláh warns that liberty without restraint harms man and teaches that true liberty lies in submission to God’s commandments. The teaching does not abandon freedom; it deepens its meaning.

Kierkegaard held that authentic existence is reached when one stops hiding in the crowd and decides inwardly as a "single individual" before God. The Hidden Words likewise speak directly to the soul: see with thine own eyes, bring thyself to account each day, seek none other than God. Both see faith not as inherited custom but as a personal decision.

Sartre held that human beings have no predetermined essence but are free beings who choose themselves and bear full responsibility for their choices. Nietzsche proclaimed that "God is dead," attacked inherited morality as the morality of the weak, and held up the Übermensch who creates new values. Dewey saw knowledge as an instrument for solving the problems of life and championed a democratic education of continual learning and growth through experience and practice. The teaching binds knowledge, work and faith together.

MacIntyre argued that modern ethics, fixed on rules and calculation, had lost its way, and that we must recover the virtues formed within the traditions of a community and the narrative of a life. The Writings likewise place virtue at the core of what a human being is, stressing a character that grows better day by day and a community in which individuals, community and institutions learn together in harmony. Both see virtue not as private ornament but as the strength that builds a shared life.

Athens practiced direct democracy, citizens deciding in the assembly, while modern states developed representative democracy, in which citizens elect those who govern. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá wrote that members of consultative assemblies should preferably be chosen by the will and choice of the people, and Bahá’u’lláh urged the elected representatives of every land to concern themselves only with what profits mankind. Shoghi Effendi explained that the Bahá’í Administrative Order gathers the wholesome elements of the various systems of government while excluding their evils.

As to the practice of nomination in Bahá’í elections, this the Guardian firmly believes to be in fundamental disaccord with the spirit which should animate and direct all elections held by the Bahá’ís, be they of a local or national character and importance. It is, indeed, the absence of such a practice that constitutes the distinguishing feature and the marked superiority of the Bahá’í electoral methods over those commonly associated with political parties and factions. The practice of nomination being thus contrary to the spirit of Bahá’í Administration should be totally discarded by all the friends. For otherwise the freedom of the Bahá’í elector in choosing the members of any Bahá’í Assembly will be seriously endangered, leaving the way open for the domination of personalities.
Deliberative democracy holds that decisions should not merely add up preferences by voting but should emerge from public discussion in which citizens exchange reasons. The Bahá’í community practices this as consultation: opinions are offered to a shared search rather than defended as one’s own, and from the clash of differing views the spark of truth appears. Seeing a parliament full of quarrel and quibbling, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá called it "not consultation but comedy."

If he finds that a previously expressed opinion is more true and worthy, he should accept it immediately and not willfully hold to an opinion of his own.

Parliamentary procedure should have for its object the attainment of the light of truth upon questions presented and not furnish a battleground for opposition and self-opinion. Antagonism and contradiction are unfortunate and always destructive to truth. In the parliamentary meeting mentioned, altercation and useless quibbling were frequent; the result, mostly confusion and turmoil; even in one instance a physical encounter took place between two members. It was not consultation but comedy.

The second principle is that of detachment in consultation. The members of an Assembly must learn to express their views frankly, calmly, without passion or rancour. They must also learn to listen to the opinions of their fellow members without taking offence or belittling the views of another. Bahá’í consultation is not an easy process. It requires love, kindliness, moral courage and humility. Thus no member should ever allow himself to be prevented from expressing frankly his view because it may offend a fellow member; and, realizing this, no member should take offence at another member’s statements.

The Extremes of Wealth and Poverty
Capitalism holds that private property and free competition in the market increase wealth, and Adam Smith argued that the pursuit of private interest serves the public good through an "invisible hand." ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá accepts the capitalist’s right to his fortune, yet says that a few accumulating wealth far beyond their needs while the many go hungry is contrary to justice and humanity, and calls for laws that correct the extremes. The Universal House of Justice asks the preachers of materialism, capitalist or socialist, where is the "new world" they promised.

Marx read history as the history of class struggle and envisioned an equal society beyond capitalist exploitation, with the means of production held in common, a vision that left deep marks on twentieth-century East Asia. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá shared deeply in the suffering of the poor, yet taught that absolute equality imposed from outside cannot be realized and breeds disorder, and taught something greater, "voluntary sharing." Shoghi Effendi named materialistic communism among the false gods of the age.

Rawls defined justice as the principles we would choose behind a "veil of ignorance" about our own position, and proposed the difference principle: inequalities are just only if they bring the greatest benefit to the least advantaged. Bahá’u’lláh calls justice "the light of men" whose purpose is unity among men, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says society must be so arranged that poverty disappears and everyone shares in comfort.
Nozick held that rights to property justly acquired and transferred may not be violated, that the state should be a minimal one guarding contract and security, and that coercive redistribution is unjust. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likewise calls wealth honestly earned by one’s own effort and spent for the common good "praiseworthy in the highest degree," and teaches that sharing is noblest when freely chosen. Yet the Writings also call for laws against extremes of wealth and poverty and for obligatory giving for the poor, which sets them apart from the minimal state.

Thoreau saw refusal to obey an unjust law, and going to jail for it, as a duty of conscience; Rawls justified civil disobedience in a nearly just society as public, nonviolent law-breaking that accepts punishment; and Singer examined its conditions within democratic procedure. The Bahá’í teachings take a different path. They make obedience to government a principle and do not accept deliberate law-breaking even for social change, yet they will never bow to a demand to deny their faith, even at the cost of prison and death. The nonviolent endurance of the Bahá’ís of Iran is its witness.

To such orders, however, as are tantamount to a recantation of their faith by its members, or constitute an act of disloyalty to its spiritual, its basic and God-given principles and precepts, it will stubbornly refuse to bow, preferring imprisonment, deportation and all manner of persecution, including death—as already suffered by the twenty thousand martyrs that have laid down their lives in the path of its Founders—rather than follow the dictates of a temporal authority requiring it to renounce its allegiance to its cause.

These considerations, however, do not imply an endorsement of the actions or policies of one’s government.

We see, therefore, that we must do two things–shun politics like the plague, and be obedient to the Government in power in the place where we reside. We cannot start judging how a particular government came into power, and therefore whether we should obey it or not. This would immediately plunge us into politics. We must obey in all cases except where a spiritual principle is involved, such as denying our Faith. For these spiritual principles we must be willing to die.

For whereas the friends should obey the government under which they live, even at the risk of sacrificing all their administrative affairs and interests, they should under no circumstances suffer their inner religious beliefs and convictions to be violated and transgressed by any authority whatever. … In matters of belief, however, no compromise whatever should be allowed, even though the outcome of it be death or expulsion.
