생활과 윤리 I
Ethics and Life I
The Root of the Good
Metaethics asks what "good" means and whether moral judgements can have any objective ground; naturalists, intuitionists and emotivists answer differently. The Writings root morality in the fear of God and in the conscience He placed in man, while insisting that true religion never contradicts reason, so that faith and thought stand together.

The fear of God hath ever been a sure defense and a safe stronghold for all the peoples of the world. It is the chief cause of the protection of mankind, and the supreme instrument for its preservation. Indeed, there existeth in man a faculty which deterreth him from, and guardeth him against, whatever is unworthy and unseemly, and which is known as his sense of shame.

As religion inculcates morality, it is therefore the truest philosophy, and on it is built the only lasting civilization.

The power of conscience is therefore needed, and spiritual sentiments are required, that souls may feel compelled to evince a goodly character. It is our firm belief that the power of implementation in this great endeavour is the penetrating influence of the Word of God and the confirmations of the Holy Spirit.

There is no contradiction between true religion and science. When a religion is opposed to science it becomes mere superstition: that which is contrary to knowledge is ignorance.

Religion, as in the past, is still the world’s sole hope, but not that form of religion which our ecclesiastical leaders strive vainly to preach. Divorced from true religion, morals lose their effectiveness and cease to guide and control man’s individual and social life. But when true religion is combined with true ethics, then moral progress becomes a possibility and not a mere ideal. … The need of our modern youth is for such a type of ethics founded on pure religious faith. Not until these two are rightly combined and brought into full action can there be any hope for the future of the race. 2.
Laws Born of Love
In normative ethics Kant judges an act by its motive and universal duty, while Bentham and Mill judge it by its consequences for happiness. Bahá’u’lláh asks that His laws be kept "for the love of My beauty", turning duty from fear or calculation into a lover’s response; its fruit is justice, and man’s worth lies in service and virtue.

Man’s merit lieth in service and virtue and not in the pageantry of wealth and riches. 3.
The Best Mantle
Virtue ethics, in Aristotle as in Confucius, asks less "what should I do?" than "what kind of person should I become?" Bahá’u’lláh calls good character the best mantle God bestows on man, and teaches that one who grasps the greatness of his station will show forth nothing but goodly character and pure deeds.

Whoso attaineth unto it is accounted as a jewel among men.

We call people ‘saints’ who have achieved the highest degree of mastery over their ego. … It is a relative thing; perfection will never be reached, but great, and ever greater, progress can be made. 4.
Science with a Conscience
Applied ethics arose as biotechnology, information technology and ecological crisis raised questions traditional ethics never foresaw. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá honours science as the first emanation from God to man, yet insists that religion and science walk hand in hand; Bahá’u’lláh warns that even liberty and civilization become harmful when carried beyond moderation.

Science is the first emanation from God toward man. Consider for instance such things as liberty, civilization and the like. However much men of understanding may favorably regard them, they will, if carried to excess, exercise a pernicious influence upon men. 5.
A Reckoning Each Day
Zengzi said, "Each day I examine myself on three points": whether I was loyal in serving others, trustworthy with friends, and faithful in practising what I was taught. Bahá’u’lláh likewise bids us bring ourselves to account each day and weigh every act in God’s Balance, a teaching that resonates deeply with the East Asian tradition of self-cultivation.

The Examined Life
Socrates held that "the unexamined life is not worth living" and made "know thyself" the starting point of philosophy. Self has really two meanings, or is used in two senses, in the Bahá’í writings: one is self, the identity of the individual created by God. This is the self mentioned in such passages as ‘he hath known God who hath known himself etc.’. The other self is the ego, the dark, animalistic heritage each one of us has, the lower nature that can develop into a monster of selfishness, brutality, lust and so on. It is this self we must struggle against, or this side of our natures, in order to strengthen and free the spirit within us and help it to attain perfection. 7.
Deeds, Not Words
Wang Yangming taught the unity of knowing and acting, and ethics has always wrestled with the gap between what we know and how we live. The Writings bid us close that gap: say not what you do not do, for ideals are worthless until they are translated into the world of action.

The abortion debate divides between those who regard the foetus as already a human person and those who put first a woman’s right to decide about her own body. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that the embryo possesses from the beginning all perfections, the spirit included; the guidance of the House of Justice is that, since the soul comes into being at conception, abortion merely to avoid an unwanted child is not permitted, though it may be considered for grave medical reasons on a physician’s advice and in good conscience.

All Bahá’ís are subject to Bahá’í law and Bahá’í standards. It would clearly be unacceptable for a Bahá’í doctor to advocate abortion as a method of birth control and set up a clinic for that purpose, or for a Bahá’í psychiatrist to publicly advocate sexual intercourse before marriage.

Abortion and surgical operations for the purpose of preventing the birth of unwanted children are forbidden in the Cause unless there are circumstances which justify such actions on medical grounds, in which case the decision, at present, is left to the consciences of those concerned who must carefully weigh the medical advice in the light of the general guidance given in the Teachings. … It should be pointed out, however, that the Teachings state that the soul appears at conception, and that therefore it would be improper to use such a method, the effect of which would be to produce an abortion after conception has taken place.

Assisted reproduction such as IVF, surrogacy and gamete donation offers hope to childless couples but raises fears of commodified life and confused family ties. Bahá’u’lláh names the bringing forth of children who will remember God as a purpose of marriage and bids us resort to competent physicians; the Writings do not legislate on assisted reproduction as such, but they place procreation within marriage, and they honour one who raises another’s child as one who raises a child of God.

Asked about death, Confucius replied, "Not yet knowing life, how can one know death?", turning his disciples toward living rightly now.
When his wife died Zhuangzi drummed on a basin and sang, seeing life and death as the gathering and scattering of qi, like the turning seasons. The Writings too see death as a return, yet not a dissolving into nature: it is the journey of a personal soul back to God, as the verse engraved on the Bahá’í burial ring declares.

The Buddha awakened to impermanence and taught that clinging to what passes is the root of suffering; ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls Him a precious Being who established the oneness of God. Why Fear Death?
Epicurus argued, "Where death is, I am not; where I am, death is not": death is the end of sensation and so nothing to fear. The Writings also free us from the fear of death, but for the opposite reason: the soul is not extinguished; it endures as long as the Kingdom of God and continues to progress after leaving the body.

Heidegger called the human being a "being-toward-death", who lives authentically only by facing his own death.
The euthanasia debate sets the right to a painless death and personal autonomy against the conviction that life is not ours to dispose of, with added fears of a "slippery slope" that pressures the vulnerable. The Writings regard life as God’s to give and to take, and the House of Justice has left euthanasia as a matter for future legislation; meanwhile they bid us use competent medicine and assure us that suffering, met in faith, leads the soul toward perfection.

With reference to your letter of 1 July 1985, we are asked to say that, in general, our Teachings indicate that God, the Giver of life, can alone dispose of it as He deems best. The Universal House of Justice has found nothing in the Sacred Text about the matter of withholding or removing life support in disabling or terminal illnesses where intervention prolongs life. Therefore, until such time as the House of Justice considers legislation on these matters, it is left to the conscience of the individual concerned whether or not to subscribe to a ‘living will’.

As you have keenly observed, the Universal House of Justice may consider it untimely to make definitive rulings on certain matters to which no direct reference can be found in the Sacred Text. The Body Once Exalted by the Soul
Whether brain death counts as death is contested alongside organ transplantation, between traditions that look to the heartbeat and medicine that looks to the irreversible loss of brain function. The Writings teach that the soul is not imprisoned in the body nor touched by its ailments, yet they call for respect toward the body "once exalted by the immortal soul". Shoghi Effendi approved bequeathing one’s body or organs to medicine as a noble act, the burial law then being observed for what remains.

Suicide is argued over as a matter of personal freedom or a tragedy the community must prevent, and in societies like Korea with high suicide rates it is urgent.
In Korea burial has rapidly given way to cremation, for reasons of space, hygiene and environment. Bahá’í law requires burial in a coffin, within an hour’s journey of the place of death, with the Prayer for the Dead for adults; as ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá and Shoghi Effendi affirmed, it precludes cremation. Gene therapy offers hope against incurable disease, while human cloning and genetic "enhancement" raise the spectres of instrumentalized life and eugenics. The greater the power of science, the more it needs moral wisdom to guide it.

It demands daily vigilance in the control of one’s carnal desires and corrupt inclinations.

Chastity in no way implies withdrawal from human relationships. It liberates people from the tyranny of the ubiquity of sex. A person who is in control of his sexual impulses is enabled to have profound and enduring friendships with many people, both men and women, without ever sullying that unique and priceless bond that should unite man and wife.

Chastity implies both before and after marriage an unsullied, chaste sex life. Before marriage absolutely chaste, after marriage absolutely faithful to one’s chosen companion. The world today is submerged, amongst other things, in an overexaggeration of the importance of physical love, and a dearth of spiritual values. … Outside of their normal, legitimate married life they should seek to establish bonds of comradeship and love which are eternal and founded on the spiritual life of man, not on his physical life. This is one of the many fields in which it is incumbent on the Bahá’ís to set the example and lead the way to a true human standard of life, when the soul of man is exalted and his body but the tool for his enlightened spirit.

As to chastity, this is one of the most challenging concepts to get across in this very permissive age, but Bahá’ís must make the utmost effort to uphold Bahá’í standards, no matter how difficult they may seem at first. Such efforts will be made easier if the youth will understand that the laws and standards of the Faith are meant to free them from untold spiritual and moral difficulties in the same way that a proper appreciation of the laws of nature enables one to live in harmony with the forces of the planet.

In sexual morality, as in other realms of behaviour, people often stumble and fall short of the ideal. It is the task of Spiritual Assemblies to ensure that the friends are deepened in their understanding of the teachings, and are exhorted to apply them in their lives. In caring for its community, a Spiritual Assembly should act as a loving father rather than as a stern judge in such matters. 24.
The Gift of Sex and Its Rightful Channel
Asceticism condemns sex as sinful, while modern hedonism treats it as something to consume. Bahá’í teaching rejects both: the sex impulse is of value, to be regulated and controlled rather than suppressed, and marriage has been established as the channel of its rightful expression; sexual relations outside marriage are not permitted.

The Bahá’í Faith recognizes the value of the sex impulse, but condemns its illegitimate and improper expression such as free love, companionate marriage and others, all of which it considers positively harmful to man and to the society in which he lives. The proper use of the sex instinct is the natural right of every individual, and it is precisely for this very purpose that the institution of marriage has been established. The Bahá’ís do not believe in the suppression of the sex impulse but in its regulation and control.

The Institution of marriage as established by Bahá’u’lláh, while giving due importance to the physical aspect of marital union, considers it as subordinate to the moral and spiritual purposes and functions with which it has been invested by an all-wise and loving Providence. Only when these different values are given each their due importance, and only on the basis of the subordination of the physical to the moral, and the carnal to the spiritual, can such excesses and laxity in marital relations as our decadent age is so sadly witnessing be avoided, and family life be restored to its original purity, and fulfil the true function for which it has been instituted by God.

In considering the effect of obedience to the laws on individual lives, one must remember that the purpose of this life is to prepare the soul for the next. Here one must learn to control and direct one’s animal impulses, not to be a slave to them. Life in this world is a succession of tests and achievements, of falling short and of making new spiritual advances. Sometimes the course may seem very hard, but one can witness, again and again, that the soul who steadfastly obeys the law of Bahá’u’lláh, however hard it may seem, grows spiritually, while the one who compromises with the law for the sake of his own apparent happiness is seen to have been following a chimera: he does not attain the happiness he sought, he retards his spiritual advance and often brings new problems upon himself. 25.

Marriage is encouraged but not obligatory, and the Writings establish monogamy.

The Bahá’í Teachings do not only encourage marital life, considering it the natural and normal way of existence for every sane, healthy and socially-conscious and responsible person, but raise marriage to the status of a divine institution, its chief and sacred purpose being the perpetuation of the human race–which is the very flower of the entire creation–and its elevation to the true station destined for it by God.

The Consent of Parents
Today marriage is widely seen as the free choice of two individuals, and in Korea the old idea of a union between families has weakened. Bahá’u’lláh first requires the consent of the couple, then makes the consent of all living parents a condition of marriage: not to curb freedom, but to prevent enmity between families and to plant in children gratitude and respect toward those who gave them life.

Bahá’u’lláh has clearly stated the consent of all living parents is required for a Bahá’í marriage. This applies whether the parents are Bahá’ís or non-Bahá’ís, divorced for years or not. It is perfectly true that Bahá’u’lláh’s statement that the consent of all living parents is required for marriage places a grave responsibility on each parent. When the parents are Bahá’ís they should, of course, act objectively in withholding or granting their approval. They cannot evade this responsibility by merely acquiescing in their child’s wish, nor should they be swayed by prejudice; but, whether they be Bahá’í or non-Bahá’í, the parents’ decision is binding, whatever the reason that may have motivated it. Children must recognize and understand that this act of consenting is the duty of a parent. They must have respect in their hearts for those who have given them life, and whose good pleasure they must at all times strive to win.

In many cases of breach of marriage laws the believers apparently look upon the law requiring consent of parents before marriage as a mere administrative regulation, and do not seem to realize that this is a law of great importance affecting the very foundations of human society. All too often nowadays such consent is withheld by non-Bahá’í parents for reasons of bigotry or racial prejudice; yet we have seen again and again the profound effect on those very parents of the firmness of the children in the Bahá’í law, to the extent that not only is the consent ultimately given in many cases, but the character of the parents can be affected and their relationship with their child greatly strengthened. … Thus, by upholding Bahá’í law in the face of all difficulties we not only strengthen our own characters but influence those around us. 27.

Traditional marital ethics, as in the Confucian "distinction between husband and wife", stressed separate roles, while modern ethics stresses equality and mutual respect. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls husband and wife two helpmates living as a single soul and likens humanity to a bird that can fly only when both wings, women and men, are equal; the House of Justice urges loving consultation in the family and holds that domination by force can never be justified.

What possible influence could they hope to exert on the development of nations and the establishment of world peace?

Surely Shoghi Effendi would like to see you and the other friends give their whole time and energy to the Cause, for we are in great need for competent workers, but the home is an institution that Bahá’u’lláh has come to strengthen and not to weaken. Many unfortunate things have happened in Bahá’í homes just for neglecting this point. Serve the Cause but also remember your duties towards your home. It is for you to find the balance and see that neither makes you neglect the other. 29.
Honour to Father and Mother
Filial piety stands at the heart of East Asian ethics: "filiality is the root of virtue." Amid shrinking families and an ageing society its meaning is being asked anew. Bahá’u’lláh places regard for the rights of parents next only to recognizing the unity of God; ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá asks children, after their parents have passed on, to give in their name and pray for them, carrying the spirit of ancestral remembrance into prayer and charity.

Divorce is recognized as a right to leave an unhappy marriage, yet easy divorce leaves deep wounds on families and children. Bahá’í law permits divorce only after a "year of patience" in which affection may be renewed; Bahá’u’lláh says that God loves union and abhors separation and divorce, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá urges the friends to refrain from divorce unless a compelling reason makes harmony impossible.

Bahá’í law permits divorce but, as both Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá have made very clear, divorce is abhorred. Thus, from the point of view of the individual believer he should do all he can to refrain from divorce. Bahá’ís should be profoundly aware of the sanctity of marriage and should strive to make their marriages an eternal bond of unity and harmony. This requires effort and sacrifice and wisdom and self-abnegation. A Bahá’í should consider the possibility of divorce only if the situation is intolerable and he or she has a strong aversion to being married to the other partner.

Work as Worship
Calvin saw one’s occupation as a calling from God, and Max Weber traced the modern work ethic to that idea. Bahá’u’lláh makes engagement in a trade or profession a duty for all and exalts work done in the spirit of service to the rank of worship, while the idle beggar is the most despised in God’s sight.

Confucius taught that "the ruler be a ruler, the minister a minister, the father a father, the son a son": the rectification of names, each fulfilling the duties of his station, as the root of good government. Bahá’u’lláh bids a ruler guard the poor as his "treasures on earth", and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá asks those in public office to discharge their duties with fidelity and integrity; beneath both lies truthfulness, the agreement of word and reality.

Rawls proposed that behind a "veil of ignorance" rational people would choose equal basic liberties and the "difference principle", allowing inequalities only when they most benefit the least advantaged. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likewise declares that a few amassing vast fortunes while the many go naked is contrary to justice and humanity, and calls for laws that prevent undue concentration of wealth and meet the needs of the many, including pensions so workers are not left destitute in age or sickness.

Now, the root cause of these difficulties lies in the law of nature that governs present-day civilization, for it results in a handful of people accumulating vast fortunes that far exceed their needs, while the greater number remain naked, destitute, and helpless. This is at once contrary to justice, to humanity, and to fairness; it is the very height of inequity and runs counter to the good-pleasure of the All-Merciful.

By the statement ‘the economic solution is divine in nature’ is meant that religion alone can, in the last resort, bring in man’s nature such a fundamental change as to enable him to adjust the economic relationships of society.
Nozick held that rights to justly acquired holdings may not be violated and that redistributive taxation is akin to forced labour (justice as entitlement). ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá also rejects the forced equalization of wealth, whose harvest is turmoil; yet the answer is not indifference but voluntary sharing, greater than imposed equality, for man reaches perfection through good deeds freely performed.

Walzer argued that each social good, such as money, power, honour or education, has its own criterion of distribution, and that dominance in one sphere must not spill into others ("complex equality"). ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that differences of capacity and role are needed for order, as an army needs generals and soldiers, citing the failure of Lycurgus’s experiment in absolute equality in Sparta, while insisting that extremes of wealth and want be corrected by law.

Favour to the Minority
Affirmative action seeks substantive equality by widening opportunity for groups disadvantaged by past discrimination, though critics call it "reverse discrimination". Shoghi Effendi writes that if any discrimination is to be tolerated it must be in favour of, not against, the minority, so that when votes or qualifications are equal, priority goes unhesitatingly to the minority; and Bahá’í law gives daughters preference in education when not all children can be schooled, since mothers are the first educators of the next generation.

If any discrimination is at all to be tolerated, it should be a discrimination not against, but rather in favor of the minority, be it racial or otherwise.

So great and vital is this principle that in such circumstances, as when an equal number of ballots have been cast in an election, or where the qualifications for any office are balanced as between the various races, faiths or nationalities within the community, priority should unhesitatingly be accorded the party representing the minority, and this for no other reason except to stimulate and encourage it, and afford it an opportunity to further the interests of the community.

To discriminate against any tribe because they are in a minority is a violation of the spirit that animates the Faith of Bahá’u’lláh. As followers of God’s Holy Faith it is our obligation to protect the just interests of any minority element within the Bahá’í Community. In fact in the administration of our Bahá’í affairs, representatives of minority groups are not only enabled to enjoy equal rights and privileges, but they are even favoured and accorded priority. Bahá’ís should be careful never to deviate from this noble standard even if the course of events of public opinion should bring pressure to bear upon them. 40.
The Two Pillars
Corrective justice asks how wrongs are to be set right. Bahá’u’lláh teaches that justice is what trains the world, upheld by the two pillars of reward and punishment, on which the canopy of world order is raised; punishment is thus not vengeance but one support of the justice that preserves order.

Retributivism demands that the offender receive what he deserves, while utilitarianism justifies punishment only so far as it deters crime and serves the general good. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that the individual has no right to revenge and should forgive, but the body politic has the right to punish in order to protect its members; yet what is essential is to educate people so that crimes are not committed at all, putting prevention and education before punishment.

There are two kinds of retributive actions: One is revenge and retaliation, and the other—punishment and requital. An individual has no right to seek revenge, but the body politic has the right to punish the criminal. Such punishment is intended to dissuade and deter others from committing similar crimes.

Korea retains it in law but has carried out no execution since 1997.
Civil disobedience, from Thoreau through Gandhi to Martin Luther King, openly and nonviolently breaks unjust laws and accepts the penalty to awaken the conscience of society; Rawls too judged it justified under certain conditions. The House of Justice, acknowledging whatever merit it has had, states that civil disobedience, a conscious decision to violate the law to effect social change, is not acceptable for Bahá’ís; yet obedience implies no endorsement of government policy, and Bahá’ís will give their lives rather than recant their faith.

Furthermore, Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá enjoined Bahá’ís to be obedient to the government of their land. Unity, order, and cooperation are the basis for sound and lasting change. Even civil disobedience, in the form of a conscious decision to violate the law to effect social change, is not acceptable for Bahá’ís—whatever merit it appears to have had in particular political settings.

These considerations, however, do not imply an endorsement of the actions or policies of one’s government.

In matters, however, that vitally affect the integrity and honor of the Faith of Bahá’u’lláh, and are tantamount to a recantation of their faith and repudiation of their innermost belief, they are convinced, and are unhesitatingly prepared to vindicate by their life-blood the sincerity of their conviction, that no power on earth, neither the arts of the most insidious adversary nor the bloody weapons of the most tyrannical oppressor, can ever succeed in extorting from them a word or deed that might tend to stifle the voice of their conscience or tarnish the purity of their faith.

We see, therefore, that we must do two things–shun politics like the plague, and be obedient to the Government in power in the place where we reside. We cannot start judging how a particular government came into power, and therefore whether we should obey it or not. This would immediately plunge us into politics. We must obey in all cases except where a spiritual principle is involved, such as denying our Faith. For these spiritual principles we must be willing to die. 45.

Democratic society lives not only by voting but by active participation in public discourse and civil society. Bahá’u’lláh teaches that all men have been created to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization. The House of Justice explains that non-involvement in partisan politics and obedience to government are not obstacles to social change but part of an approach that addresses the root causes of society’s ills: Bahá’ís engage actively in the life of society, contribute to policy by all lawful means, and may join peaceful efforts for the advancement of women, social justice, the environment, the end of discrimination and human rights.

All men have been created to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization. The Almighty beareth Me witness: To act like the beasts of the field is unworthy of man. Those virtues that befit his dignity are forbearance, mercy, compassion and loving-kindness towards all the peoples and kindreds of the earth.

The principles of non-involvement in politics and obedience to government, far from being obstacles to social change, are aspects of an approach set forth in the Bahá’í writings to implement effective remedies for and address the root causes of the ills afflicting society. This approach includes active involvement in the life of society as well as the possibility of influencing and contributing to the social policies of government by all lawful means. Indeed, service to others and to society is a hallmark of the Bahá’í life.

Thus, individual Bahá’ís are free to participate in those efforts and activities, such as peaceful rallies, that uphold constructive aims in consonance with the Bahá’í teachings, for example, the advancement of women, the promotion of social justice, the protection of the environment, the elimination of all forms of discrimination, and the safeguarding of human rights.

The Faith is not opposed to the true interests of any nation, nor is it against any party or faction. It holds aloof from all controversies and transcends them all, while enjoining upon its followers loyalty to government and a sane patriotism. This love for their country the Bahá’ís show by serving its well-being in their daily activity, or working in the administrative channels of the government instead of through party politics or in diplomatic or political posts. The Bahá’ís may, indeed are encouraged to mix with all strata of society, with the highest authorities and with leading personalities as well as with the mass of the people, and should bring the knowledge of the Faith to them; but in so doing they should strictly avoid becoming identified, or identifying the Faith, with political pursuits and party programmes.

The Bahá’í Community is a world-wide organization seeking to establish true and universal peace on earth. If a Bahá’í works for one political party to overcome another it is a negation of the very spirit of the Faith. Membership in any political party, therefore, necessarily entails repudiation of some or all of the principles of peace and unity proclaimed by Bahá’u’lláh.
