생활과 윤리 II

Ethics and Life II

The Two Wings

Those who hold that science is value-neutral say it only discovers facts, while the good or evil of its use lies outside science; their critics answer that the direction and application of research already carry value judgements. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls science and religion the two wings of one bird: with either alone, humanity falls into superstition or materialism.

Religion and science are the two wings upon which man’s intelligence can soar into the heights, with which the human soul can progress. It is not possible to fly with one wing alone! Should a man try to fly with the wing of religion alone he would quickly fall into the quagmire of superstition, whilst on the other hand, with the wing of science alone he would also make no progress, but fall into the despairing slough of materialism.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, 44

Science is the first emanation from God toward man. All created beings embody the potentiality of material perfection, but the power of intellectual investigation and scientific acquisition is a higher virtue specialized to man alone.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, 20 April 1912

Knowledge is as wings to man’s life, and a ladder for his ascent. Its acquisition is incumbent upon everyone. The knowledge of such sciences, however, should be acquired as can profit the peoples of the earth, and not those which begin with words and end with words. Great indeed is the claim of scientists and craftsmen on the peoples of the world.
Bahá’u’lláh, Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, Tajallíyát

Knowledge That Bears Fruit

One view holds that technology is neither good nor bad and only its users are responsible; another holds that values are already built into technology. The Writings prize the sciences that bear fruit for humanity, and the Universal House of Justice speaks of the values inherent to technology; only scientific knowledge joined to spiritual insight can make technology serve the common good.

Such arts and sciences, however, as are productive of good results, and bring forth their fruit, and are conducive to the well-being and tranquility of men have been, and will remain, acceptable before God.
Bahá’u’lláh, Epistle to the Son of the Wolf

Scientific knowledge, to take but one simple example, helps the members of a community to analyse the physical and social implications of a given technological proposal—say, its environmental impact—and spiritual insight gives rise to moral imperatives that uphold social harmony and that ensure technology serves the common good.
The Universal House of Justice, 26 November 2012

The complementarity of science and religion, the imperative of spiritual and material education, the influence of values inherent to technology on the organization of society, and the relevance of appropriate technology to social progress are among the issues involved.
The Universal House of Justice, 26 November 2012

The scientific and technological advances occurring in this unusually blessed century portend a great surge forward in the social evolution of the planet, and indicate the means by which the practical problems of humanity may be solved. They provide, indeed, the very means for the administration of the complex life of a united world. Yet barriers persist. Doubts, misconceptions, prejudices, suspicions and narrow self-interest beset nations and peoples in their relations one to another.
The Universal House of Justice, The Promise of World Peace

The Scientist's Charge

Those who stress the scientist's responsibility hold that researchers must foresee and disclose the consequences of their discoveries. In Paris in 1911 ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá grieved that the God-given gift of intellect was being used to frame instruments of war, and urged that knowledge always be used for the benefit of others.

How grievous it is to see how man has used his God-given gift to frame instruments of war, for breaking the Commandment of God “Thou shalt not kill,” and for defying Christ’s injunction to “Love one another.”
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, 11

God gave this power to man that it might be used for the advancement of civilization, for the good of humanity, to increase love and concord and peace. But man prefers to use this gift to destroy instead of to build, for injustice and oppression, for hatred and discord and devastation, for the destruction of his fellow-creatures, whom Christ has commanded that he should love as himself!
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, 11

An Ethics of Foresight

Hans Jonas argued that because modern technology reaches the distant future and the whole of nature, we need a 'heuristics of fear' that weighs the worst outcomes first, and a responsibility toward future generations. In the nineteenth century Bahá’u’lláh already warned of forces able to change the whole atmosphere of the earth, and of a civilization that, carried past moderation, would become a flame devouring the cities.

Strange and astonishing things exist in the earth but they are hidden from the minds and the understanding of men. These things are capable of changing the whole atmosphere of the earth and their contamination would prove lethal.
Bahá’u’lláh, Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, Kalimát‑i‑Firdawsíyyih

The civilization, so often vaunted by the learned exponents of arts and sciences, will, if allowed to overleap the bounds of moderation, bring great evil upon men. Thus warneth you He Who is the All-Knowing. If carried to excess, civilization will prove as prolific a source of evil as it had been of goodness when kept within the restraints of moderation.
Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings, CLXIV

It is incumbent upon them who are in authority to exercise moderation in all things. Whatsoever passeth beyond the limits of moderation will cease to exert a beneficial influence.
Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings, CX

A plethora of destructive forces and events, including environmental degradation, climate change, pandemics, the decline of religion and morals, the loss of meaning and identity, the erosion of the concepts of truth and reason, unbridled technology, the exacerbation of prejudices and ideological contention, pervasive corruption, political and economic upheaval, war and genocide, have left their traces in blood and anguish on the pages of history and the lives of billions.

Words as Mild as Milk

Cyberspace, with its anonymity and speed, is both a forum for free expression and a place where contempt and ridicule spread instantly. The Universal House of Justice asks that the same precepts of courtesy, humility and avoiding backbiting be kept online, sometimes even more scrupulously, for human utterance is, in Bahá’u’lláh's words, an essence that needs moderation.

Bahá’u’lláh refers to human utterance as “an essence which aspireth to exert its influence and needeth moderation”, and He enjoins His followers to “speak with words as mild as milk, that the children of men may be nurtured and edified thereby and may attain the ultimate goal of human existence which is the station of true understanding and nobility.”
The Universal House of Justice, 9 October 2015

With this in mind, Bahá’ís should embody moderation, courtesy, and humility in any discussion in which they take part—whether in person or online.

It will be apparent that the precepts the friends observe in the course of their general interactions with those around them must also characterize, sometimes even more scrupulously, their communication carried out via social media. These precepts include the prohibition on backbiting, the counsel to see the world with their own eyes and not through the eyes of others, the need to uphold the oneness of humanity and avoid a mind-set of “us” and “them”, and the principles of consultation and the necessary decorum associated with it.
The Universal House of Justice, 1 December 2019

When criticism and harsh words arise within a Bahá’í community, there is no remedy except to put the past behind one, and persuade all concerned to turn over a new leaf, and for the sake of God and His Faith refrain from mentioning the subjects which have led to misunderstanding and inharmony. The more the friends argue back and forth and maintain, each side, that their point of view is the right one, the worse the whole situation becomes.

The Mirror of the World

New media have made everyone a producer of information, but also spread unverified claims and sensationalism. Bahá’u’lláh called newspapers 'the mirror of the world' and asked their writers to be free of selfish passion, clothed in justice and equity, and to ascertain the facts; Shoghi Effendi foresaw a mechanism of world intercommunication embracing the whole planet.

The pages of swiftly-appearing newspapers are indeed the mirror of the world. They reflect the deeds and the pursuits of divers peoples and kindreds. They both reflect them and make them known. They are a mirror endowed with hearing, sight and speech. This is an amazing and potent phenomenon. However, it behooveth the writers thereof to be purged from the promptings of evil passions and desires and to be attired with the raiment of justice and equity. They should inquire into situations as much as possible and ascertain the facts, then set them down in writing.
Bahá’u’lláh, Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, Ṭarázát

As you know, technological advancement is integral to the emergence of a global civilization. Indeed, the Internet is a manifestation of a development anticipated by the Guardian when, in describing the characteristics of a unified humanity, he foresaw that a “mechanism of world inter-communication will be devised, embracing the whole planet, freed from national hindrances and restrictions, and functioning with marvellous swiftness and perfect regularity.” Yet, learning to utilize the Internet in a manner conducive to material and spiritual progress is an immense challenge.
The Universal House of Justice, 9 October 2015

Seeing with One's Own Eyes

The more information floods a society, the more it matters that each person can discern truth for themselves. Bahá’u’lláh bids us, by the aid of justice, to see with our own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls truthfulness the foundation of all virtues; in an age of fabricated news, this becomes a duty of independent investigation.

Ponder this in thy heart; how it behooveth thee to be. Verily justice is My gift to thee and the sign of My loving-kindness. Set it then before thine eyes.

The Door of Security

Advocates of strong copyright defend the creator's labour and incentive; advocates of open sharing call knowledge the common inheritance of humanity. The Writings do not settle this legal debate, but they name trustworthiness 'the door of security for all that dwell on earth' and give the golden rule; honest dealing with the work of others is one expression of that trust.

Breathe Not the Sins of Others

In an information society private lives are easily exposed and spread, and online exposure can ruin a person's life; defenders of privacy hold that human dignity requires control over one's own information. Bahá’u’lláh tells us not to breathe the sins of others but to look to our own faults, and warns that backbiting quenches the light of the heart.

Knowledge for Every Soul

The digital divide is the way unequal access to devices and education widens economic inequality. Bahá’u’lláh likens every human being to a mine rich in gems that education alone can reveal, and the Universal House of Justice states that no nation can succeed unless education is accorded all its citizens; ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá's call for an interchange of gifts between East and West points the same way.

The Machine and the Rational Soul

Artificial intelligence raises questions about whether machines can think, who answers for their decisions, and what becomes of human work and dignity. The Writings do not address AI directly, but they locate what is distinctively human not in calculation but in a soul that mirrors the names and attributes of God and a spirit that reaches toward transcendence; however clever our tools become, the duty to use them well remains ours.

Master of Nature?

Bacon declared that knowledge is power and saw nature as something to be mastered for human welfare; Descartes called humanity the 'master and possessor of nature'; Kant held that only rational beings are ends in themselves and that duties toward animals are indirect. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likewise affirms that the human mind and soul have mastery over nature, but the same Writings tie that power to a duty of justice and equity toward all living creatures.

The animal is the captive of nature and cannot transgress the rules and laws thereof. In man, however, there is a discovering power that transcendeth the world of nature and controlleth and interfereth with the laws thereof. For instance, all minerals, plants and animals are captives of nature. The sun itself with all its majesty is so subservient to nature that it hath no will of its own and cannot deviate a hair’s-breadth from the laws thereof. In like manner all other beings, whether of the mineral, the vegetable or the animal world, cannot deviate from the laws of nature, nay, all are the slaves thereof. Man, however, though in body the captive of nature is yet free in his mind and soul, and hath the mastery over nature.

Nature Is God's Will

Against an instrumental view that sees nature only as a resource for human use stands the view that nature has value in itself. Bahá’u’lláh calls nature 'the embodiment of My Name, the Maker, the Creator' and 'God's Will', and teaches that the light of one of His names shines in every created thing; to look rightly at nature is to read the signs of its Creator.

The Hapless Beast Is Mute

Peter Singer argued that the interests of every being capable of suffering deserve equal consideration and criticized speciesism; Tom Regan held that animals, as 'subjects of a life', have inherent rights. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that in physical sensation there is no difference between man and beast, and that to harm a mute animal is worse still, making kindness to animals a spiritual duty.

The feelings are one and the same, whether ye inflict pain on man or on beast. There is no difference here whatever. And indeed ye do worse to harm an animal, for man hath a language, he can lodge a complaint, he can cry out and moan; if injured he can have recourse to the authorities and these will protect him from his aggressor. But the hapless beast is mute, able neither to express its hurt nor take its case to the authorities. If a man inflict a thousand ills upon a beast, it can neither ward him off with speech nor hale him into court. Therefore is it essential that ye show forth the utmost consideration to the animal, and that ye be even kinder to him than to your fellow man.

Kindness to Every Living Soul

Schweitzer taught reverence for all life, describing himself as 'life that wills to live, in the midst of life that wills to live'; Paul Taylor saw every organism as a 'teleological centre of life' pursuing its own good. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likewise founds the Kingdom of God on kindness to every living soul, while also speaking frankly of the natural order of eaters and eaten and of harmful beasts, offering a balanced rather than sentimental ethic of life.

All Beings Linked Like a Chain

In his 'land ethic' Aldo Leopold saw humanity as a plain member of the land community rather than its conqueror, and judged right whatever preserves the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community; Arne Naess's deep ecology speaks of realizing a wider 'Self' through awareness of the interconnection of all life. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá likens the universe to one body whose parts are linked like a chain in mutual aid and influence.

In sum, all beings, whether universal or particular, are mutually connected in accordance with God’s consummate wisdom and mutually influence one another. Were it not so, the all-embracing organization and universal arrangement of existence would become disordered and disrupted.

We cannot segregate the human heart from the environment outside us and say that once one of these is reformed everything will be improved. Man is organic with the world. His inner life moulds the environment and is itself also deeply affected by it. The one acts upon the other and every abiding change in the life of man is the result of these mutual reactions.

Heaven, Earth and Humankind

The Confucian unity of Heaven and humanity, the Daoist ideal of spontaneous naturalness, and the Buddhist teaching of dependent origination all see humanity and nature in harmony rather than opposition. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá loved the beauty of the natural world and taught the interconnection of every part of the universe, and the Universal House of Justice speaks of a harmony between society and the natural world that resonates deeply with East Asian wisdom.

Living Justly on a Finite Planet

Climate justice names the unfairness by which poor nations and future generations, who emitted least, suffer most. The Universal House of Justice frames the issue as how a growing humanity can live justly in harmony with a finite planet, and counsels united action informed by the best scientific evidence and grounded in spiritual principle, avoiding both exaggeration and denial.

One of the most pressing problems of humanity in the current century is how a growing, rapidly developing, and not yet united global population can, in a just manner, live in harmony with the planet and its finite resources. Certain biological realities present themselves when an organism negatively affects or exceeds the capacity of its ecosystem. The limited availability and inequitable distribution of resources profoundly impact social relations within and between nations in many ways, even to the point of precipitating upheaval and war. And particular arrangements of human affairs can have devastating consequences for the environment. The question of the impact of climate change, and to what extent it is man-made and its effects can be ameliorated, is today a major aspect of this larger problem.

A World Fit for Our Descendants

Debate over obligations to future generations asks whether we can owe anything to those who do not yet exist, and answers that our choices shape their lives. Bahá’u’lláh teaches that all were created to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization, and the Universal House of Justice calls for clearing the ground for a new world fit for our descendants, warning against the materialist whisper that concern for the environment is for another day.

Put Away Covetousness

An ethic of sustainability returns in the end to the ancient virtue of restraint. As Laozi said that whoever knows contentment is rich, Bahá’u’lláh bids us put away covetousness and seek contentment; the Universal House of Justice explains that His moderation is no mere compromise but a demand to end the destructive excesses that have plagued humanity.

All Art Is a Gift of the Spirit

Moralism, from Plato to Tolstoy, holds that art should teach and nurture the good; aestheticism, with Oscar Wilde, proclaims 'art for art's sake' and separates artistic value from morality. The Writings see art as a gift of the Holy Spirit and wholehearted work as worship, binding beauty and goodness together; art fulfils its highest purpose in showing forth the praise of God.

A Ladder for Your Souls

How far artistic freedom should extend is an old debate. Bahá’u’lláh made music lawful while asking that it not overstep the bounds of propriety or become wings to self and passion; where some Eastern traditions had frowned on music, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá called it spiritual food for soul and heart.

Mirrors of a Disordered Age

Adorno and Horkheimer criticized the 'culture industry' for standardizing art like a commodity and turning people into passive consumers, while others defend popular culture as a democratic and creative space. The Universal House of Justice warns that music, art and literature, meant to inspire the noblest sentiments, have become mirrors of a disordered age, and cautions against those with financial resources imposing their cultural perspective on others; as East Asian popular culture spreads worldwide, the question is ours as well.

Food, Clothing and Home

In regard to the question as to whether people ought to kill animals for food or not, there is no explicit statement in the Bahá’í Sacred Scriptures (as far as I know) in favour or against it. It is certain, however, that if man can live on a purely vegetarian diet and thus avoid killing animals, it would be much preferable. This is, however, a very controversial question and the Bahá’ís are free to express their views on it.

Every Choice Leaves a Trace

Ethical consumption, attentive to fair trade, environmental impact and animal welfare, rests on the belief that consumers' choices can reshape production. The Universal House of Justice teaches that every economic choice, as producer or consumer, leaves a trace, and that measuring a person's worth by how much one consumes is wholly alien to Bahá’í thought; yet asceticism is prohibited too, for wealth must serve humanity.

The Garden of Many Colors

Assimilationism is the 'melting pot' that asks newcomers to dissolve into the majority culture; multiculturalism is the 'salad bowl' that honours each culture's distinctness; the 'noodle bowl' model blends many cultures on a majority base. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá observes that a garden of identical flowers would be dull, and that flowers of many kinds, nourished by one spring and one sun, make the garden beautiful; for a Korea fast becoming multicultural, the image recalls that diversity is a gift, not a threat.

Every Age Hath Its Own Problem

Cultural relativism, which seeks to understand each culture in its own context, corrects ethnocentrism, but taken to an extreme it becomes an ethical relativism unable to criticize even violations of human rights. The Writings hold that religious truth is relative and progressive, yet foresee that elements in every culture not in accord with the teachings will fall away while others are reinforced: a path that honours diversity without abandoning a universal moral standard.

Consort with the Followers of All Religions

On interreligious conflict, exclusivism holds that only one's own faith is true, inclusivism finds partial truth in others, and pluralism sees many paths to the truth; Locke and Voltaire argued for a toleration that refuses to coerce belief. Bahá’u’lláh bids us consort with the followers of all religions in friendliness and fellowship, and calls religious fanaticism and hatred a world-devouring fire; in a Korea where many religions have long lived side by side, this teaching has a special resonance.

The Hell of Prejudice

Social conflict arises from differences of ideology, region, generation, class and gender, and is seen by some as an engine of change and by others as a threat to cohesion. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá names prejudices of religion, race, politics and nation as the world's sickness, and calls the gross inequity of wealth contrary to justice and humanity; resolving conflict begins not by erasing difference but by healing these roots.

The Clash of Differing Opinions

Habermas held that norms gain legitimacy through rational agreement in an 'ideal speech situation' in which all affected take part equally and free of coercion. Bahá’í consultation resembles this and goes further, asking that each speak with complete freedom, take no offence at opposition, and not cling to an opinion as one's own; as ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá wrote, the shining spark of truth comes forth only after the clash of differing opinions.

Consultation bestoweth greater awareness and transmuteth conjecture into certitude. It is a shining light which, in a dark world, leadeth the way and guideth. For everything there is and will continue to be a station of perfection and maturity. The maturity of the gift of understanding is made manifest through consultation.

Harmony Without Uniformity

Confucius said that the noble person harmonizes without conforming, while the petty person conforms without harmonizing (和而不同), making harmony that embraces difference, not uniformity, the ideal. Shoghi Effendi wrote that Bahá’u’lláh's world order neither ignores nor suppresses the diversity of peoples, languages and traditions, and repudiates both excessive centralization and uniformity; its watchword, unity in diversity, is close kin to this Confucian wisdom.

Rays of One Light

Wonhyo of Silla taught hwajaeng, the reconciliation of disputes, showing that contending Buddhist doctrines all spring from one truth. Bahá’u’lláh likewise declares that the laws and systems of the religions 'have proceeded from one Source, and are the rays of one Light', differing only by the needs of their ages, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says that the light of truth that shone in Christ shone also in Moses and in the Buddha.

Heal the Dissensions That Divide You

The case for Korean reunification appeals to shared identity, the grief of separated families, and peace and prosperity, while realists point to vast costs, divergent systems and generational differences. The Writings do not name the Korean peninsula, but the words 'Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch' and the call to heal the dissensions that divide us speak deeply to a people long wounded by division; reunion of institutions must be preceded by reconciliation of hearts.

Toward a Perpetual Peace

In Perpetual Peace Kant proposed a free federation of republican states and a cosmopolitan right to end war forever, ideas behind the League of Nations and the United Nations. Bahá’u’lláh went further, calling the rulers of the earth to lay the foundations of the Great Peace and setting out the principle of collective security: should any nation take up arms against another, all should unitedly arise and prevent it. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá described this as a binding 'Most Great Covenant'.

The time must come when the imperative necessity for the holding of a vast, an all-embracing assemblage of men will be universally realized. The rulers and kings of the earth must needs attend it, and, participating in its deliberations, must consider such ways and means as will lay the foundations of the world’s Great Peace amongst men. Such a peace demandeth that the Great Powers should resolve, for the sake of the tranquillity of the peoples of the earth, to be fully reconciled among themselves. Should any king take up arms against another, all should unitedly arise and prevent him. If this be done, the nations of the world will no longer require any armaments, except for the purpose of preserving the security of their realms and of maintaining internal order within their territories. 35.

Peace Stems from an Inner State

Johan Galtung called the absence of war and direct violence 'negative peace', and the removal of structural and cultural violence such as poverty and discrimination 'positive peace'. The Universal House of Justice likewise holds that banning weapons cannot remove the root causes of war, which include extremes of wealth and poverty, racism, the inequality of women and ignorance, and that peace stems in essence from an inner state supported by a spiritual or moral attitude.

One is that the abolition of war is not simply a matter of signing treaties and protocols; it is a complex task requiring a new level of commitment to resolving issues not customarily associated with the pursuit of peace. Based on political agreements alone, the idea of collective security is a chimera. The other point is that the primary challenge in dealing with issues of peace is to raise the context to the level of principle, as distinct from pure pragmatism. For, in essence, peace stems from an inner state supported by a spiritual or moral attitude, and it is chiefly in evoking this attitude that the possibility of enduring solutions can be found.
The Universal House of Justice, The Promise of World Peace

The Choice Before All

Realists such as Hobbes and Morgenthau hold that states in an anarchic world pursue power and interest, so peace rests on a balance of power; idealists such as Kant and Wilson believe cooperation is possible through law, institutions and morality. The Universal House of Justice names the assumption that humans are incorrigibly selfish and aggressive as a 'paralyzing contradiction' that keeps us from the peace we long for; peace will come either after unimaginable horrors or now, by an act of consultative will.

We know, however, that peace will come in stages. First, there will come the Lesser Peace, when the unity of nations will be achieved, then gradually the Most Great Peace–the spiritual as well as social and political unity of mankind, when the Bahá’í World Commonwealth, operating in strict accordance with the laws and ordinances of the Most Holy Book of the Bahá’í Revelation, will have been established through the efforts of the Bahá’ís. … As to the Lesser Peace, Shoghi Effendi has explained that this will initially be a political unity arrived at by decision of the governments of various nations; it will not be established by direct action of the Bahá’í community.

Sharing Freely Chosen

Singer argued that aid is a duty whenever suffering can be prevented without comparable sacrifice; Rawls spoke of a duty of well-ordered peoples to assist burdened societies, aiming at their self-reliance; Nozick saw aid as charity that cannot be compelled. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that voluntary sharing is greater than imposed equality, yet asks how anyone can live at ease in a splendid mansion while others hunger, making help for the poor a foundation of religion; the Universal House of Justice adds that development must not mean transplanting one region's way of life.

To state the matter briefly, the Teachings of Bahá’u’lláh advocate voluntary sharing, and this is a greater thing than the equalization of wealth. For equalization must be imposed from without, while sharing is a matter of free choice.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, 79

For the harvest of force is turmoil and the ruin of the social order. On the other hand voluntary sharing, the freely chosen expending of one’s substance, leadeth to society’s comfort and peace. It lighteth up the world; it bestoweth honor upon humankind.

Gracious God! How can one see one’s fellow men hungry, destitute, and deprived, and yet live in peace and comfort in one’s splendid mansion? How can one see others in the greatest need and yet take delight in one’s fortune? That is why it has been decreed in the divine religions that the wealthy should offer up each year a portion of their wealth for the sustenance of the poor and the assistance of the needy. This is one of the foundations of the religion of God and is an injunction binding upon all.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Some Answered Questions, 78

Every human being has the right to live; they have a right to rest, and to a certain amount of well-being. As a rich man is able to live in his palace surrounded by luxury and the greatest comfort, so should a poor man be able to have the necessaries of life. Nobody should die of hunger; everybody should have sufficient clothing; one man should not live in excess while another has no possible means of existence.

This Bahá’í teaching of human fellowship and kindness implies that we must be always ready to extend every assistance and help we can to those who are in distress and suffering. Bahá’í charity is of the very essence of the Teachings, and should therefore be developed in every Bahá’í community. … It is the responsibility of every local Bahá’í community to insure the welfare of its poor and needy members, through whatever means possible.

The Poor in Your Midst Are My Trust

On distributive justice, Rawls allowed only inequalities that benefit the least advantaged, while Nozick defended entitlements grounded in just acquisition and transfer. Bahá’u’lláh calls the poor 'My trust' and bids us tell the rich of the midnight sighing of the poor; the Universal House of Justice says the extremes of wealth and poverty are becoming ever more untenable, and that the larger a community, the greater its responsibility to address the root causes of poverty around it.

The extremes of wealth and poverty in the world are becoming ever more untenable. As inequity persists, so the established order is seen to be unsure of itself, and its values are being questioned. Whatever the tribulations that a conflicted world must confront in the future, we pray that the Almighty will help His loved ones to overcome every obstacle in their path and assist them to serve humanity. The larger the presence of a Bahá’í community in a population, the greater its responsibility to find ways of addressing the root causes of the poverty in its surroundings.

The greatest gift that we can give to the poor and the down-trodden is to aid to build up the divine institutions inaugurated in this day by Bahá’u’lláh as these institutions, and this World Order when established, will eliminate the causes of poverty and the injustices which afflict the poor. We should, therefore, do both, support our Bahá’í Fund, and also be kind and generous to the needy.

The Earth Is But One Country

Cosmopolitanism, from Diogenes' 'I am a citizen of the world' through the Stoics to Kant, regards every human being as a member of one moral community, while communitarians stress belonging to particular communities and the worth of patriotism. Bahá’u’lláh proclaims that the earth is but one country and mankind its citizens, and the Universal House of Justice adds that love of all the world's peoples does not exclude love of one's own country.

Unbridled nationalism, as distinguished from a sane and legitimate patriotism, must give way to a wider loyalty, to the love of humanity as a whole. Bahá’u’lláh’s statement is: “The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.” The concept of world citizenship is a direct result of the contraction of the world into a single neighborhood through scientific advances and of the indisputable interdependence of nations. Love of all the world’s peoples does not exclude love of one’s country. The advantage of the part in a world society is best served by promoting the advantage of the whole.

The Light of Men Is Justice

Thinkers East and West have held justice to be the first virtue of society: Confucius taught rectified names and righteousness, and Rawls called justice the first virtue of social institutions. Bahá’u’lláh declares that 'the light of men is Justice' and that 'the purpose of justice is the appearance of unity among men', binding justice, unity and peace together.
