Korea in History
To Benefit All Humankind
Hongik Ingan, “broadly benefit humankind,” is the founding ideal Koreans have cherished since the myth of Dangun. Bahá’u’lláh widens that ideal beyond any one people: the true human being is the one who dedicates himself to the service of the entire human race.

That one indeed is a man who, today, dedicateth himself to the service of the entire human race. The Great Being saith: Blessed and happy is he that ariseth to promote the best interests of the peoples and kindreds of the earth.

All men have been created to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization. The Almighty beareth Me witness: To act like the beasts of the field is unworthy of man.

O people of God! Do not busy yourselves in your own concerns; let your thoughts be fixed upon that which will rehabilitate the fortunes of mankind and sanctify the hearts and souls of men. This can best be achieved through pure and holy deeds, through a virtuous life and a goodly behavior.

Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom. 2.
From Three Kingdoms to One
Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla shared speech and custom yet fought for centuries, and their unification came by the sword. The Writings remind us that humanity is already the fruit of one tree, and that only a unity built on love and justice, not conquest, brings lasting peace.

The utterance of God is a lamp, whose light is these words: Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch. Deal ye one with another with the utmost love and harmony, with friendliness and fellowship. He Who is the Daystar of Truth beareth Me witness! So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.

My object is none other than the betterment of the world and the tranquillity of its peoples. The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established. This unity can never be achieved so long as the counsels which the Pen of the Most High hath revealed are suffered to pass unheeded.

O well-beloved ones! The tabernacle of unity hath been raised; regard ye not one another as strangers. Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch. We cherish the hope that the light of justice may shine upon the world and sanctify it from tyranny. 3.
The Candle of Buddha
Goryeo made Buddhism its spiritual mainstay, and even amid the Mongol invasions it carved the Tripitaka Koreana in hope of the Buddha’s protection. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá names the Buddha among the holy Educators sent by God and says His candle is still shining.

The light of Christ is evident. The candle of Buddha is shining. The star of Moses is sparkling. The flame ignited by Zoroaster is still burning. How can we deny Them? It is injustice. It is a denial of complete evidence. Ritual, Reason and the Moral Order
Joseon took Neo‑Confucianism as its foundation, seeking to align the principle of Heaven with human conduct, and Confucius’ teaching shaped Korean ethics for five centuries. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says Confucius renewed the ancient conduct and morals, and teaches that true religion accords with reason and shows itself in deeds rather than words.

Confucius was not a Prophet. It is quite correct to say he is the founder of a moral system and a great reformer. 5.
Created from the Same Dust
Joseon society was divided into yangban, commoners and outcasts, and nobi were bought and sold as hereditary property. Bahá’u’lláh declares that all were created from the same dust so that none should exalt himself over another, and in the Kitáb‑i‑Aqdas He forbids the trade in slaves.

Letters for All the People
King Sejong created Hangeul because “many common people, though they have something to say, cannot express their meaning.” Bahá’u’lláh enjoins every father to teach both son and daughter to read and write, and foresees a universal script for humankind. Sejong’s gift of letters to all resonates deeply with the principle of universal education.

Bahá’u’lláh has announced that inasmuch as ignorance and lack of education are barriers of separation among mankind, all must receive training and instruction. Through this provision the lack of mutual understanding will be remedied and the unity of mankind furthered and advanced. Universal education is a universal law. It is, therefore, incumbent upon every father to teach and instruct his children according to his possibilities. If he is unable to educate them, the body politic, the representative of the people, must provide the means for their education. 7.
The People Are Your Treasures

Be unjust to no man, and show all meekness to all men. Be as a lamp unto them that walk in darkness, a joy to the sorrowful, a sea for the thirsty, a haven for the distressed, an upholder and defender of the victim of oppression. 8.
See with Thine Own Eyes
For centuries Joseon made “serving the great” its diplomatic creed, a habit that could weaken independent thought. Bahá’u’lláh bids us, through justice, to see with our own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls us to abandon blind imitation and investigate truth for ourselves.

War for a Strip of Earth
The seven‑year war that began with the Japanese invasion of 1592 left Joseon in ashes; countless people were killed or carried off as captives. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá grieves over men who shed blood for a strip of land, reminding us that the earth belongs to all peoples and that the conqueror keeps nothing in the end but his tomb.

War is really nothing more but the result of existing forces. Should we desire to end that devastating consequence we should go back to the basic causes and remedy those evils. We should eliminate the hatreds, national bigotry, mistrust and self aggrandisement as well as economic, social and religious differences which now prevail in the world if we desire to establish an abiding peace. And nothing can achieve this save the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh, for they change the human heart and also prescribe definite precepts that would render our social environment healthy and peaceful. 10.
Faithful under Calumny
Yi Sun‑sin was slandered, imprisoned and made to serve as a common soldier, yet never abandoned his loyalty to his country and people, and at Myeongnyang he held the sea with a handful of ships.
Silhak scholars such as Jeong Yak‑yong and Bak Ji‑won turned from abstract debate to learning that would actually improve the lives of the people. Truth Sought in Books
Korean Catholicism began before any missionary arrived, when scholars such as Yi Byeok and Yi Seung‑hun studied Western books from China and debated them among themselves. That rare spirit of independent search echoes ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá’s call to lay aside prejudice and recognize the light in whatever lamp it shines.

The basic principle of the Cause is independent investigation of truth. This applies to us as much as to our children. They should be free to choose for themselves any religion they wish. To promise that they will belong to a certain Faith and not to another is therefore not only contrary to our precepts, but is also a futile promise to give. How can we make the future generation think as we do or follow our dictates. God has made them free. Foreign nations, in spite of their having achieved the greatest expertness in science, industry and the arts, do not hesitate to borrow ideas from one another.

There are so many movements in the world at present akin to various Bahá’í principles; indeed we can almost say that the principles of Bahá’u’lláh have been adapted by thinking people all over this planet. But what they do not realize, and what the Bahá’ís must therefore teach them, is that these principles, however perfect, will never be able to create a new society unless and until they are animated by the spirit which alone changes the hearts and characters of men, and that spirit is recognition of their divine origin in a teacher sent from God, in other words, Bahá’u’lláh. When they recognize this, their hearts will change and a change of heart is what people need, not merely a change of intellectual outlook. 21.
The Clouds of Tyranny
From 1910 to 1945 Korea lost its sovereignty and was stripped of land, rice, labor and lives. Bahá’u’lláh commands the oppressors of the earth to withdraw their hands from tyranny, for He has pledged not to forgive any man’s injustice. The Universal House of Justice calls for unbridled nationalism to give way to a wider loyalty to humanity as a whole.

Unity in Diversity
Imperial Japan banned the Korean language in schools and forced Koreans to take Japanese names, trying to erase a people’s speech, names and memory. The unity the Writings proclaim is not uniformity: Shoghi Effendi writes that the new order does not ignore or suppress the diversity of history, language and tradition, and that its watchword is unity in diversity.

Countless independence fighters, among them An Jung‑geun, Yu Gwan‑sun and Kim Gu, gave their lives to recover their country.
Many girls and women were taken to Japanese military “comfort stations” and robbed of their dignity; survivors broke decades of silence to demand truth and apology. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says Divine Justice demands that the rights of both sexes be equally respected, and the Universal House of Justice calls the denial of equality an injustice against half the world’s population. Hearing the survivors is where justice begins.

Hundreds of thousands of Koreans were forcibly mobilized to mines, factories and battlefields, and questions of truth and redress still lie between the two nations. Forgiveness and Reconciliation
The wounds of colonial rule and war remain deep between Korea and Japan. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá distinguishes the individual, for whom forgiveness and returning good for evil is praiseworthy, from society, which punishes not for revenge but to prevent injustice. In 1912 He urged young Japanese in San Francisco to lay aside prejudice and help unite East and West.

Now, vengeance is reprehensible even according to reason, for it is of no benefit to the avenger. In truth the two actions are the same: Both are injuries; the only difference is that one preceded the other. Therefore, if the victim forgives, or better still, if he acts in the opposite manner, this is praiseworthy.

In His Tablets Bahá’u’lláh says that were we able to comprehend the facilities that await us in the world to come, death would lose its sting; nay rather we would welcome it as a gate-way to a realm immeasurably higher and nobler than this home of suffering we call our earth. You should therefore think of their blessings and comfort yourself for your momentary separation. In time all of us will join our departed ones and share their joys.

A Civilization within Moderation
From the ruins of war Korea became an industrial nation within a generation, yet rapid growth also left overwork, fierce competition, environmental damage and fraying communities. Bahá’u’lláh warns that civilization carried beyond moderation becomes as prolific a source of evil as it was of good, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that real progress is spiritual as well as material.

Every day, on waking, it was like hearing good tidings, and every night infinite joy was mine.

Peace of mind is gained by the centering of the spiritual consciousness on the Prophet of God; therefore you should study the spiritual Teachings, and receive the Water of Life from the Holy Utterances. Then by translating these high ideals into action, your entire character will be changed, and your mind will not only find peace, but your entire being will find joy and enthusiasm. 40.
The Lamp of the East
In 1929 Tagore called Korea one of the lamp‑bearers of Asia’s golden age and sang of the day when that lamp would be lit again. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says the spiritual Sun of Truth has always risen on the horizon of the East, and in 1912 He urged young people of the Orient to shine as stars radiating the light of love toward all mankind.

And ye who are the people of the Orient—the Orient which has ever been the dawning point of lights from whence the Sun of Reality has ever shone forth, casting its effulgence upon the West—ye, therefore, must become the manifestations of lights. Ye must become brilliant lamps. Ye must shine as stars radiating the light of love toward all mankind. May you be the cause of love amongst the nations. Thus may the world become witness that the Orient has ever been the dawning point of illumination, the source of love and reconciliation.

Agnes Alexander and the First Tidings
In August 1921 Agnes Alexander, then serving in Japan, came to Seoul, and with the help of the poet O Sang‑sun the first public talk on the Faith was held on 2 September in the main hall of Cheondogyo, the successor of Donghak, before some 900 people. On 5 November 1921, weeks before His passing, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá wrote to “the new friends in Korea,” calling them seeds planted in His spiritual rose garden. In the Tablets of the Divine Plan He said her services were greater than the founding of an empire.

Consider ye, that Miss Agnes Alexander, the daughter of the Kingdom, the beloved maidservant of the Blessed Perfection, traveled alone to the Hawaiian Islands, to the Island of Honolulu, and now she is gaining spiritual victories in Japan!

Korea in the Divine Plan
In the Tablets of the Divine Plan (1916 to 1917) ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá named Korea alongside Japan and China and promised that “most great results will be forthcoming” for those who go there. After the Korean War the first Local Spiritual Assemblies were formed in Seoul and Gwangju in 1956, and in 1964 the first National Spiritual Assembly of Korea was elected in Daegu. The Universal House of Justice named the Koreans among the peoples of the region from whom it hoped great numbers would enter the Faith.

Likewise, if some teachers go to other islands and other parts, such as the continent of Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, also to Japan, Asiatic Russia, Korea, French Indochina, Siam, Straits Settlements, India, Ceylon and Afghanistan, most great results will be forthcoming. How good would it be were there any possibility of a commission composed of men and women, to travel together through China and Japan—so that this bond of love may become strengthened, and through this going and coming they may establish the oneness of the world of humanity, summon the people to the Kingdom of God and spread the teachings.
