Today's Korea I: Competition and Inequality
Beyond the Exam
Each November vast numbers of students sit the College Scholastic Ability Test, and even aircraft stop landing during the English listening section. Where a single day's score can seem to decide a life, Bahá’u’lláh calls each person a mine rich in gems of inestimable value and education the means of bringing them to light. A score weighs one gem; it cannot price the whole mine.

Man is the supreme Talisman. Lack of a proper education hath, however, deprived him of that which he doth inherently possess. … Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.

Training in morals and good conduct is far more important than book learning. A child that is cleanly, agreeable, of good character, well-behaved—even though he be ignorant—is preferable to a child that is rude, unwashed, ill-natured, and yet becoming deeply versed in all the sciences and arts. … If, however, the child be trained to be both learned and good, the result is light upon light.

Noble have I created thee, yet thou hast abased thyself. Rise then unto that for which thou wast created.

Every child is potentially the light of the world—and at the same time its darkness; wherefore must the question of education be accounted as of primary importance.

People today indeed do tend to be very superficial in their thinking, and it would seem as if the educational systems in use are sorely lacking in ability to produce a mature mind in a person who has reached supposedly adult life! All the outside influences that surround the individual seem to have an intensely distracting effect, and it is a hard job to get the average person to do any deep thinking or even a little meditation on the problems facing him and the world at large. 2.
Nights at the Hagwon
Spending on private tutoring in Korea keeps setting new records, and most students attend hagwon. Children streaming out of the hagwon districts late at night show a parental anxiety born of love. The Writings make a child's education a sacred duty of parents, yet place its centre not in getting ahead of others but in character and everlasting honour.

Unto every father hath been enjoined the instruction of his son and daughter in the art of reading and writing and in all that hath been laid down in the Holy Tablet. … He that bringeth up his son or the son of another, it is as though he hath brought up a son of Mine; upon him rest My glory, My loving-kindness, My mercy, that have compassed the world.

Ye should consider the question of goodly character as of the first importance. It is incumbent upon every father and mother to counsel their children over a long period, and guide them unto those things which lead to everlasting honor.

From his infancy, the child must be nursed at the breast of God’s love, and nurtured in the embrace of His knowledge, that he may radiate light, grow in spirituality, be filled with wisdom and learning, and take on the characteristics of the angelic host.

It is not, however, permissible to strike a child, or vilify him, for the child’s character will be totally perverted if he be subjected to blows or verbal abuse. 3.
The Veil of Credentials
In a society where the names of a few universities, the so-called SKY, follow a person like a lifelong rank, learning often becomes a mark of hierarchy rather than an instrument of service. Bahá’u’lláh exalts knowledge, yet warns that knowledge which yields only arrogance and conceit becomes a veil between man and his Creator. A person's worth lies not in the name on a diploma but in service and virtue.

Man’s merit lieth in service and virtue and not in the pageantry of wealth and riches.

Know verily that Knowledge is of two kinds: Divine and Satanic. … The former bringeth forth the fruit of patience, of longing desire, of true understanding, and love; whilst the latter can yield naught but arrogance, vainglory and conceit.
Although to acquire the sciences and arts is the greatest glory of mankind, this is so only on condition that man’s river flow into the mighty sea, and draw from God’s ancient source His inspiration. … If, then, the pursuit of knowledge lead to the beauty of Him Who is the Object of all Knowledge, how excellent that goal; but if not, a mere drop will perhaps shut a man off from flooding grace, for with learning cometh arrogance and pride, and it bringeth on error and indifference to God. 4.
What Education Is For
Korea achieved one of the world's highest rates of higher education in a short time, yet many students can answer the question 'why learn?' only with the name of a university. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá distinguishes material education for the body, human education for civilization, and spiritual education for acquiring divine perfections, and calls the last true education. Bahá’u’lláh asks for learning that profits the peoples of the earth, not learning that begins and ends in words.

But education is of three kinds: material, human, and spiritual. Material education aims at the growth and development of the body, and consists in securing its sustenance and obtaining the means of its ease and comfort. This education is common to both man and animal.
As to divine education, it is the education of the Kingdom and consists in acquiring divine perfections. This is indeed true education, for by its virtue man becomes the focal centre of divine blessings and the embodiment of the verse “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness.”

Knowledge is as wings to man’s life, and a ladder for his ascent. Its acquisition is incumbent upon everyone. The knowledge of such sciences, however, should be acquired as can profit the peoples of the earth, and not those which begin with words and end with words.

In truth, knowledge is a veritable treasure for man, and a source of glory, of bounty, of joy, of exaltation, of cheer and gladness unto him.

The primary, the most urgent requirement is the promotion of education. It is inconceivable that any nation should achieve prosperity and success unless this paramount, this fundamental concern is carried forward.

Bahá’u’lláh considered education as one of the most fundamental factors of a true civilization. This education, however, in order to be adequate and fruitful, should be comprehensive in nature and should take into consideration not only the physical and the intellectual side of man but also his spiritual and ethical aspects. 5.
Youth at the Threshold
Official youth unemployment figures do not tell the whole story; counting those preparing for exams and the young people who are 'just resting', hundreds of thousands stand waiting at the door of work. The Writings do not overlook the pain of losing work, and they call every person a tree of God's garden made to bear fruit. Society bears the duty of fostering in its young people confidence in the future.

To the Generation of Giving Up
The 'three-give-up generation', which gave up dating, marriage and children, has grown into the 'N-give-up generation', laying down home, relationships, dreams and even hope. The phrase speaks not of laziness but of weariness. Bahá’u’lláh reminds us that both prosperity and abasement pass away, and that adversity is followed by success and rejoicing follows woe.

The dark horizon faced by a world which has failed to recognize the Promised One, the Source of its salvation, acutely affects the outlook of the younger generations; their distressing lack of hope and their indulgence in desperate but futile and even dangerous solutions make a direct claim on the remedial attention of Bahá’í youth, who, through their knowledge of that Source and the bright vision with which they have thus been endowed, cannot hesitate to impart to their despairing fellow youth the restorative joy, the constructive hope, the radiant assurances of Bahá’u’lláh’s stupendous Revelation.

Hell Joseon and Hope
'Hell Joseon' is the younger generation's bitter joke about a society that seems unchanged however hard one tries. Bahá’u’lláh does not hide that the world is sick, and He declares that the All-Knowing Physician, Who perceives the disease, has prescribed the remedy. Instead of despair He calls us to attend to the needs of our own age and to carry forward together an ever-advancing civilization.

No Spoon Decides the Soul
The talk of gold spoons and dirt spoons carries a resignation that parents' wealth decides a child's life in advance. Bahá’u’lláh says that God created all from the same dust so that no one should exalt himself over another. A person's true foundation is not the house of his birth but the soul that God created rich and noble.

Do not grieve, dear brother, for being poor, for you are rich instead in faith and in spirit. This is a divine wealth for which the richest of the world will crave for in vain.
In Seoul people say that even saving every won of one's salary, it would take well over a decade to buy an apartment. Amid the wounds of 'scraping together every last won' and lease fraud, a home has become a name for anxiety rather than a place to live. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls a human family in which some own several mansions while others have nowhere to lay their heads a household that is not well arranged, and He counsels that the cares of life should not monopolize all of a person's thoughts.

In Korea the gap is widening faster in assets than in income. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that absolute equality is neither possible nor desirable, yet states plainly that both extremes, excessive wealth and grinding poverty, must be abolished. The Universal House of Justice adds that the solution needs not only laws and systems but a new spiritual attitude.

Korea's so-called anti-workplace-harassment law took effect in 2019, yet many workers are still wounded by verbal abuse, ostracism and excessive demands. We have exalted your engagement in such work to the rank of worship of the one true God. Reflect, O people, on the grace and blessings of your Lord, and yield Him thanks at eventide and dawn. Waste not your hours in idleness and sloth, but occupy yourselves with what will profit you and others.

Korea has a great many self-employed workers, and the speed at which fried-chicken shops and cafés open and close reflects how hard that life is. Poverty in old age is a serious problem in Korea. A generation that gave its life to educating its children and supporting its own parents, and could not prepare for its own old age, can now be seen gathering waste paper in the streets. Like the East Asian tradition of filial piety, Bahá’u’lláh teaches that after recognizing the unity of God the greatest of all is regard for the rights due to one's parents, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá envisions an order in which society together provides for the aged and the infirm.

As soon as a Bahá’í family unit emerges, the members should feel responsible for making the collective life of the family a spiritual reality, animated by divine love and inspired by the ennobling principles of the Faith. To achieve this purpose, the reading of the Sacred Writings and prayers should ideally become a daily family activity. 24.
No One Lives Alone
Single-person households now make up more than a third of all households in Korea, and every year more than three thousand people die alone and are found only later. A society worn out by competition forgets how to knock on a neighbour's door. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that man was not made to live singly and alone and that all humanity is one family, and Bahá’u’lláh bids us be a home for the stranger and a balm to the suffering.

Indeed the believers have not yet fully learned to draw on each other’s love for strength and consolation in time of need. From Competition to Cooperation
In a society that ranks its children by place and grade from an early age, competition seems like a law of nature. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá calls the struggle for existence a feature of the world of nature, and teaches that the supreme need of humanity is cooperation and reciprocity. The Universal House of Justice notes that the vision of Bahá’u’lláh challenges the very assumption that progress depends upon relentless competition.

What Success Means
A good university, a large company and an apartment in Seoul often pass for the one right answer called success. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that the honour and distinction of the individual lie in becoming a source of social good, and that there is no greater bliss than to become the cause of peace and happiness to others. Success is measured not by how much one holds but by how much good one does.

The 'friend's perfect son' of every Korean mother's story and the lives displayed on social media become endless yardsticks for the self. The Universal House of Justice states that to view the worth of an individual chiefly by how much one accumulates and consumes relative to others is wholly alien to Bahá’í thought. Bahá’u’lláh tells us that He created us out of love and engraved His image upon us, and that a heart in which the least remnant of envy lingers cannot attain His everlasting dominion.

Each of us is responsible for one life only, and that is our own. Each of us is immeasurably far from being ‘perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect’ and the task of perfecting our own life and character is one that requires all our attention, our will-power and energy. If we allow our attention and energy to be taken up in efforts to keep others right and remedy their faults, we are wasting precious time. We are like ploughmen each of whom has his team to manage and his plough to direct, and in order to keep his furrow straight he must keep his eye on his goal and concentrate on his own task. If he looks to this side and that to see how Tom and Harry are getting on and to criticise their ploughing, then his own furrow will assuredly become crooked. 28.
The Wealth of Contentment
There is no end to the longing for a larger home, a better car, a higher salary. Bahá’u’lláh bids us put away covetousness and seek contentment, and teaches that true wealth lies not in possessing gold but in being free of it. This is not a glorification of poverty but a word about the freedom of a heart that is not bound to whatever it possesses.

Hungry amid Plenty
Korea has become a wealthy country, yet in international surveys of happiness it does not stand where its wealth would suggest. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that joy, peace and consolation are not to be found in transitory material things, and that humanity can fly only with two wings, material and spiritual civilization. The paradox of plenty comes from trying to fly on one wing.

Hasten thereunto that thou mayest become an eternal light and an immortal spirit.

I myself was in prison forty years—one year alone would have been impossible to bear—nobody survived that imprisonment more than a year! But, thank God, during all those forty years I was supremely happy! Every day, on waking, it was like hearing good tidings, and every night infinite joy was mine.

The laborer cuts up the earth with his plough, and from that earth comes the rich and plentiful harvest. The more a man is chastened, the greater is the harvest of spiritual virtues shown forth by him.

Physical pain is a necessary accompaniment of all human existence, and as such is unavoidable. As long as there will be life on earth, there will be also suffering, in various forms and degrees. But suffering, although an inescapable reality, can nevertheless be utilised as a means for the attainment of happiness. This is the interpretation given to it by all the prophets and saints who, in the midst of severe tests and trials, felt happy and joyous and experienced what is best and holiest in life. Suffering is both a reminder and a guide. It stimulates us to better adapt ourselves to our environmental conditions, and thus leads the way to selfimprovement. In every suffering one can find a meaning and a wisdom. But it is not always easy to find the secret of that wisdom. It is sometimes only when all our suffering has passed that we become aware of its usefulness.

We must always look ahead and seek to accomplish in the future what we may have failed to do in the past. Failures, tests, and trials, if we use them correctly, can become the means of purifying our spirit, strengthening our characters, and enable us to rise to greater heights of service. 32.
The Light of Justice
'Fairness' is one of the most heated words in Korean society today. Bahá’u’lláh declares that the best beloved of all things in His sight is justice, the power by which we see with our own eyes and not through the eyes of others. The order of the world and the tranquillity of the nations depend upon its light.

O Son of Spirit! The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice; turn not away therefrom if thou desirest Me, and neglect it not that I may confide in thee. By its aid thou shalt see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and shalt know of thine own knowledge and not through the knowledge of thy neighbor.

And, in Bahá’u’lláh’s memorable words, “No light can compare with the light of justice. The establishment of order in the world and the tranquillity of the nations depend upon it.”

God is not partial and is no respecter of persons. He has made provision for all. The harvest comes forth for everyone. The rain showers upon everybody and the heat of the sun is destined to warm everyone. The verdure of the earth is for everyone. 33.
What Is Worth Living For
Many who have climbed the whole ladder of competition and achievement then stand before the question, 'What am I living for now?' Bahá’u’lláh teaches that God's purpose in creating man is to enable him to know his Creator and to attain His Presence, and He calls a life spent in ignorance of one's own self true loss. The Universal House of Justice adds that by consecrating oneself to the service of others one finds meaning and purpose in life.
