Today's Korea II: Relationships and the Heart

The Two Wings of Humanity

The equality of women and men is, in Bahá’u’lláh’s teaching, not a secondary social reform but a spiritual principle. In a Korea that has known a long history of preference for sons, ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá’s image of two wings that must both grow strong reads as a promise for men and women alike.

Women and men have been and will always be equal in the sight of God. The Dawning-Place of the Light of God sheddeth its radiance upon all with the same effulgence.
Bahá’u’lláh, in Women: A Compilation

And among the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh is the equality of women and men. The world of humanity has two wings—one is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly. Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible. Not until the world of women becomes equal to the world of men in the acquisition of virtues and perfections, can success and prosperity be attained as they ought to be.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 227

Women have equal rights with men upon earth; in religion and society they are a very important element. As long as women are prevented from attaining their highest possibilities, so long will men be unable to achieve the greatness which might be theirs.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 40

Therefore, surely, God is not pleased that so important an instrument as woman should suffer from want of training in order to attain the perfections desirable and necessary for her great life’s work! Divine Justice demands that the rights of both sexes should be equally respected since neither is superior to the other in the eyes of Heaven. Dignity before God depends, not on sex, but on purity and luminosity of heart. Human virtues belong equally to all!
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 50

This principle is far more than the enunciation of admirable ideals; it has profound implications in all aspects of human relations and must be an integral element of Bahá’í domestic and community life. The application of this principle gives rise to changes in habits and practices which have prevailed for many centuries.
The Universal House of Justice, letter to an individual, 24 January 1993

The equality of men and women is not, at the present time, universally applied. In those areas where traditional inequality still hampers its progress we must take the lead in practising this Bahá’í principle.

After the Age of Force

Patriarchy was for long an order in which the stronger ruled the weaker. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says the balance is already shifting, and that love, service and intuition will take the place of force. This does not push men aside; it frees both men and women from outworn roles.

The world in the past has been ruled by force, and man has dominated over woman by reason of his more forceful and aggressive qualities both of body and mind. But the balance is already shifting; force is losing its dominance, and mental alertness, intuition, and the spiritual qualities of love and service, in which woman is strong, are gaining ascendancy. Hence the new age will be an age less masculine and more permeated with the feminine ideals, or, to speak more exactly, will be an age in which the masculine and feminine elements of civilization will be more evenly balanced.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, quoted in J. E. Esslemont, Bahá’u’lláh and the New Era

Why then should one sex assert the inferiority of the other, withholding just rights and privileges as though God had given His authority for such a course of action? If women received the same educational advantages as those of men, the result would demonstrate the equality of capacity of both for scholarship.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 50

It is not to be denied that in various directions woman at present is more backward than man, also that this temporary inferiority is due to the lack of educational opportunity. In the necessity of life, woman is more instinct with power than man, for to her he owes his very existence.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 50

Bahá’í men have the opportunity to demonstrate to the world around them a new approach to the relationship between the sexes, where aggression and the use of force are eliminated and replaced by cooperation and consultation.

The principle of the equality between women and men, like the other teachings of the Faith, can be effectively and universally established among the friends when it is pursued in conjunction with all the other aspects of Bahá’í life. Change is an evolutionary process requiring patience with one’s self and others, loving education and the passage of time as the believers deepen their knowledge of the principles of the Faith, gradually discard long-held traditional attitudes and progressively conform their lives to the unifying teachings of the Cause.
From a letter written on behalf of the Universal House of Justice to an individual believer, July 25, 1984: Women, A Compilation; Lights of Guidance, no. 2098

Partners, Not Rivals

Where online spaces overflow with words that cast men and women as enemies, the Bahá’í Writings see the sexes not as rivals but as complements. If one is held down, the other cannot fully fly: an insight that turns attention from conflict to a shared destiny.

She is the coadjutor of man, his complement and helpmeet. Both are human; both are endowed with potentialities of intelligence and embody the virtues of humanity. In all human powers and functions they are partners and coequals.

As long as women are prevented from attaining their highest possibilities, so long will men be unable to achieve the greatness which might be theirs.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 40

God’s Bounty is for all and gives power for all progress. When men own the equality of women, there will be no need for them to struggle for their rights! One of the principles, then, of Bahá’u’lláh is the equality of sex.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Paris Talks, no. 50

For the world of humanity possesses two wings: man and woman. If one wing remains incapable and defective, it will restrict the power of the other, and full flight will be impossible.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, no. 103

That men and women differ from one another in certain characteristics and functions is an inescapable fact of nature; the important thing is that He regards such inequalities as remain between the sexes as being ‘negligible’.

The Rise of Women

Korea’s debates over feminism are heated and sometimes wounding. The Bahá’í Writings clearly uphold women’s education and rights, yet place the goal not in the victory of one side but in the unity of humankind and peace. The call to give daughters and sons the same education was given more than a century ago.

Daughters and sons must follow the same curriculum of study, thereby promoting unity of the sexes. When all mankind shall receive the same opportunity of education and the equality of men and women be realized, the foundations of war will be utterly destroyed.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, no. 62

Woman must endeavor then to attain greater perfection, to be man’s equal in every respect, to make progress in all in which she has been backward, so that man will be compelled to acknowledge her equality of capacity and attainment.

So will it be with woman: her actions will show her power; there will no longer be any need to proclaim it by words.

No Place for Force

Violence from those closest to us wounds not only the body but the soul. The Universal House of Justice states plainly that compelling another by force is a grave transgression that nothing can justify. Those who suffer it are entitled to the loving support of their community.

O ye lovers of God! In this, the cycle of Almighty God, violence and force, constraint and oppression, are one and all condemned.

The friends of God must be adorned with the ornament of justice, equity, kindness and love. As they do not allow themselves to be the object of cruelty and transgression, in like manner they should not allow such tyranny to visit the handmaidens of God.
Bahá’u’lláh, quoted in a letter of the Universal House of Justice, 24 January 1993

The use of force by the physically strong against the weak, as a means of imposing one’s will and fulfilling one’s desires, is a flagrant transgression of the Bahá’í Teachings. There can be no justification for anyone compelling another, through the use of force or through the threat of violence, to do that to which the other person is not inclined.
The Universal House of Justice, letter to an individual, 24 January 1993

A Fortress for Well-Being

In an age when many young Koreans speak of giving up on dating and marriage, the Bahá’í Writings call marriage a fortress for well-being and salvation. The counsel to come to know each other’s character thoroughly invites us to look past appearance and status to the person.

And when He desired to manifest grace and beneficence to men, and to set the world in order, He revealed observances and created laws; among them He established the law of marriage, made it as a fortress for well-being and salvation, and enjoined it upon us in that which was sent down out of the heaven of sanctity in His Most Holy Book.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, marriage tablet, in Bahá’í Prayers

Their purpose must be this: to become loving companions and comrades and at one with each other for time and eternity.…
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, no. 86

That two people should live their lives in love and harmony is of far greater importance than that they should be consumed with passion for each other. The one is a great rock of strength on which to lean in time of need; the other a purely temporary thing which may at any time die out.

As to chastity, this is one of the most challenging concepts to get across in this very permissive age, but Bahá’ís must make the utmost effort to uphold Bahá’í standards, no matter how difficult they may seem at first. 7. 이혼

The Year of Patience

Divorce has become common in Korea, yet the wounds and stigma it leaves remain. Bahá’u’lláh abhors divorce yet does not forbid it, setting a year of patience so that love may have a chance to return: a law in which firmness and mercy stand together.

Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitáb‑i‑Aqdas, ¶68

Divorce is strongly condemned in the Bahá’í Teachings. If, however, antipathy or resentment develop between the marriage partners, divorce is permissible after the lapse of one full year. During this year of patience, the husband is obliged to provide for the financial support of his wife and children, and the couple is urged to strive to reconcile their differences. Shoghi Effendi affirms that both the husband and wife “have equal right to ask for divorce” whenever either partner “feels it absolutely essential to do so.”
The Kitáb‑i‑Aqdas, Notes, no. 100

The presence of children, as a factor in divorce, cannot be ignored, for surely it places an even greater weight of moral responsibility on the man and wife in considering such a step. Divorce under such circumstances no longer just concerns them and their desires and feelings but also concerns the children’s entire future and their own attitude towards marriage.

8. 외로움

Nearer Than Thou Knowest

A great many Koreans speak of deep loneliness. Bahá’u’lláh’s Hidden Words declare that no human being is abandoned: we were created out of God’s love, and that love already dwells within us. Loneliness can become a call to rediscover that nearness.

A Home for the Stranger

Living alone has become one of the most common ways of life in Korea. If living alone is not to become isolation, neighbors must become a home for one another. Bahá’u’lláh counsels us to be worthy of our neighbor’s trust, to greet him with a bright face, and to be a home for the stranger.

10. 고독사

No One Dies Forgotten

Dying alone and unnoticed is a painful shadow over Korean society. The Bahá’í Writings console us that death is not an end but a messenger of joy, while asking those of us still living to be a joy to the sorrowful and a balm to the suffering. Consolation and responsibility go together.

Two Ways of Healing

Depression is not a failure of will but an illness that calls for treatment. Bahá’u’lláh bids us consult competent physicians when ill, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá asks that medical and spiritual means of healing be used together. Seeking help is not a lack of faith; it is obedience to God’s command.

The Fire Held Within

Hwabyeong, the illness of long-suppressed anger and grief, is a sorrow deeply woven into Korean culture. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá teaches that anger is not evil in itself but becomes good or evil according to where it is directed, and that a thought of hatred must be overcome by a stronger thought of love. A culture of consultation, where each may speak without fear, offers a way out of silent suppression.

Social media and related communication tools tend to give the greatest exposure to all that is controversial, and the very same tools allow individuals, in an instant, to disseminate more widely whatever catches their attention and to register their support or opposition to various sentiments, whether explicitly or tacitly. The unparalleled ease with which a person can join in such public debate and the nature of the technology make momentary lapses of judgement and incautious actions more likely and their residue more enduring.

The Beauty That Endures

In a society where appearance seems to decide employment, romance and even self-worth, many young people suffer before the mirror. Bahá’u’lláh says that a person’s glory lies in knowledge, upright conduct, praiseworthy character and wisdom, and bids us let deeds be our adorning. Caring for the body is no wrong, but a person’s worth never lies in a face.

Seeing With Thine Own Eyes

One Homeland, One Habitation

In modern Korean history, regional rivalry is an old wound reopened at every election. Bahá’u’lláh declares that this span of earth is but one homeland and one habitation, and ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá asks why we should invent divisions God did not make. Lines drawn within a small peninsula are all the more meaningless.

19. 꼰대와 MZ

The Spark From the Clash of Opinions

The labels “kkondae” and “MZ” arose from the frustration of generations who cannot understand each other. The Bahá’í principle of consultation teaches that each, whatever age or rank, should speak freely, take no offense at opposition, and expect the spark of truth to come from the clash of differing opinions. Deeds persuade more than words.

The integrity of the family bond must be constantly considered and the rights of the individual members must not be transgressed. The rights of the son, the father, the mother—none of them must be transgressed, none of them must be arbitrary. Just as the son has certain obligations to his father, the father, likewise, has certain obligations to his son. The mother, the sister and other members of the household have their certain prerogatives. All these rights and prerogatives must be conserved.
‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, quoted in a letter of the Universal House of Justice, 24 January 1993

Marriage creates family. And the sound relationships that are to bind members of a Bahá’í family are based on justice and reciprocity. Each member must receive the rights due; each must fulfil the responsibilities owed. “According to the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh the family, being a human unit, must be educated according to the rules of sanctity”, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá explains. “The integrity of the family bond must be constantly considered, and the rights of the individual members must not be transgressed.” These sound relationships among family members require conscious cultivation.

Honour Your Parents

Filial piety is among the deepest legacies of Confucian culture in Korea, yet today it can feel like a mere burden of duty. Bahá’u’lláh teaches that, after recognition of the unity of God, the greatest thing is regard for the rights due to one’s parents, while ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá adds that parents should not hold their children back from the spiritual path. Filial love flows from gratitude, not compulsion.

Consider that which the Merciful Lord hath revealed in the Qur’án, exalted are His words: “Worship ye God, join with Him no peer or likeness; and show forth kindliness and charity towards your parents…” Observe how loving-kindness to one’s parents hath been linked to recognition of the one true God!

International marriages and multicultural families have become a natural part of Korean society, yet their children still meet discriminating looks. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá bids us think of those of different color as roses of many hues in the beautiful garden of humanity. The old pride in being a single ethnic people must now grow into a wider oneness.

The Soul Untouched by Infirmity

Korea’s debates over the rights of disabled people to move freely and to work ask us how we measure a person’s worth. Bahá’u’lláh says the human soul is exalted above and independent of all infirmities of body or mind. A person’s dignity lies not in bodily ability but in the soul, and the community is called to be eyes to the blind.

Chastity Without Contempt

Debate over sexual minorities is among the sharpest issues in Korean society. The Bahá’í teachings apply to everyone alike a law of chastity that places sexual expression within marriage between a man and a woman, and by that law do not permit sexual relations between people of the same sex. Yet the same teachings require that no one be judged or despised, and that all be met with help, sympathy and respect. Keeping the law and loving the person do not contend with each other.

While recognizing the divine origin and force of the sex impulse in man, religion teaches that it must be controlled, and Bahá’u’lláh’s law confines its expression to the marriage relationship. Kindness to Every Living Creature

Households living with companion animals have greatly increased, yet abandonment and abuse continue. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá says animals share the selfsame physical feelings as humans, and that harming a mute creature is even worse. Bahá’u’lláh strictly forbids burdening an animal beyond what it can bear.

The Very Spirit of the Place

Old Korean villages had traditions of mutual aid such as dure and pumasi. The Universal House of Justice observes that when neighbors learn, worship and serve together in neighborhoods and villages, “the very spirit of the place is affected.” The warm hospitality of an open home becomes the thread that reweaves community.

The very spirit of the place is affected. A devotional attitude takes shape within a broad sweep of the population. Expressions of the equality of men and women become more pronounced. The education of children, both boys and girls, commands greater attention. The character of relationships within families—moulded by assumptions centuries old—alters perceptibly. A sense of duty towards one’s immediate community and physical environment becomes prevalent. Even the scourge of prejudice, which casts its baleful shadow on every society, begins to yield to the compelling force of unity.

30. 용서

Forgiveness and Magnanimity

To someone deeply wounded, the word “forgive” cannot be spoken lightly. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá distinguishes clearly between society punishing crime for the sake of justice and an individual taking revenge, and says that for the individual, forgiveness and magnanimity are what befit the human world. Forgiveness does not cover injustice; it breaks the chain of revenge.
